Title: Losing power
Post by: Dive1082 on July 06, 2013, 12:35:50 PM
Hi all,

Whilst out today in the lovely sunshine, I opened the bike up in 2nd and third and when she reached about 6.5 to 7 rpm she started dropping power similar to when you reach the limiter....

Anyone know what this could be?  She's a 2009 and at 27k mileage.  Was a bit warm as I'd trundled through the urban streets but not excessively hot.

Sounds like vapour lock http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=13158.0 (http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=13158.0) was it OK when it cooled down? Doesn't sound like a blocked breather but try (carefull) leaving the cap open. Put some new cool fuel in (or AVGAS ). "Black" is a good "colour" for radiating heat but poor in the sun.

P.S. It's England it's not that hot!!

Hmmm definitely an issue with vacum in the fuel system.  Just been out again and as soon as the temp got warm, the bike was losing power again.  Opened the fuel flap and there is more suction than normal.  Once the pressure is released all is good for a while then it's back.

Looks like its going to need some further investigation.  Anyone know where the breather pipes are located?

Excerpt from workshop manual.

" Fuel Tank and Cap Inspection
•Visually inspect the gasket on the tank cap for any damage.
•Replace the gasket if it is damaged.
Check to see if the water drain pipe and fuel breather pipe (California Model) in the tank are not clogged. Check the tank cap breather also.
If they are clogged, remove the tank and drain it, and then blow the breather free with compressed air."

Checking the breather in the filler cap is the easiest thing to check. Probably not that, but it's a good place to start. Always check the simple things first. Hope this helps

Hi Dive

I had this last year. Would you believe it was the battery which needed replacing.

Once you replace it you will still get the problem for a few miles until the engine readout system recognises you have a new battery.

I know this seems unlikely, and I am not saying this is the cause, but all that has been said was fed back to me and then I found out it was nothing other than a new battery needed. How it caused the problem I have not a clue.
