Title: going going almost gone
Post by: GTRTONY on June 20, 2013, 04:32:09 PM
well after 2 years ownership I am getting rid of my GTR for a K1600
i want something a little more comfy and easy to ride that has all the bits and tweaks that a tourer should have
Build quality is also a must after suffering very early onslaught of rust and corrosion and paint flaking off my poorly finished Kwak. Shame really as the bike itself is superb, but this has done enough for me never to consider a Kwak again in the future

Goodbye all

- better read up. Corrosion on the K16 (in the UK) is an issue resulting in entire engine replacement.

I don't want to burst your bubble but I had a BMW K1300GT EE which I bought new. It had an absolutely fantastic  engine, lovely accessories, cruise control heated seats  ESA etc, but it used a lot of oil, it was an absolute pain to put onto the main stand, the panniers were odd shaped and small, but the straw that 'broke the camels back' for me was when it cut out whilst I was pulling away and promptly fell onto its side, BMW said they'd never heard of any problem like that before, which TBH was not what I was reading on the BMW owners forum at the time.

Also you may find that once on a Beemer that its difficult to P/X them in future years for anything other than another Beemer

Just my ten penneth

I am lucky to have two bikes a 2009 GTR and a 2011 FZ1S together they cost me  £17k new so £20k for any bike sounds expensive to me,  also reviews for this particular BMW do not always make good reading in fact many of the reviews have slated the 1600 for lots of different reasons.

If it was my money I'd think very carefully before spending on this particular bike IMHO.

I don't know what K have been up to lately but my 2007 has been ridden through 2 winters and only washed at best once per week and yes it has some corrosion but nothing major. I did get the centrestand replaced under warranty as after 6 months it was covered in surface rust.
The replacement centrestand is filthy but seems to have resisted the rust until now.
To be honest my bike looks like it's done 50k honest miles, which it has.
Graeme, you saw it the other day. Would you say it looks tatty in any area apart from the wheels (my fault, I used Wonderwheel on them!)

Tony, I hope you enjoy the K1600 and it gives you what you want.

Boomer, your bike looks very good, particularly considering its mileage, its age and having a man of your stature on board lol.

I only clean mine once a week with hot, soapy water and a wipe over afterwards. The wheels aren't great (on mine) so maybe they need powdercoating, etc. to make them easier to keep clean. I ride in all weathers (apart from the extreme snow).

I did sit on a BMW K1600GT something at the London bike show and it was particularly comfortable for me and the missus but way too expensive for my budget.

I too have more than one bike, the GTR for touring and days out with the missus and the occasional commute into London and back, a ZZR1100 for the regular commute and maybe a ride out with friends, and a GT380 for when I want to make some two-stroke noise and smoke!

Look after your bike and it will look after you, i clean my bike after every ride, i have only had flaking paint on my exhaust within the last 6 weeks and changed under warranty. The only place where i have seen rust is the centre stand and its only surface rust. The GTR is a brilliant bike and i for one would not change for anything else, other than health reasons. I think you are wrong to dismiss Kawasaki altogether  :tt2:, but everyone has their oppinion.

The K1300GT that I knew was a pain for its owner. Replaced shock, drive shaft, bad fuelling, poor mpg, corrosion issues. On a '10 plate, premium bike these issues shouldn't arise.

The very reason why I didn't go for a GS a few years ago. BMW = burn my wallet!
