Title: Show us your bike loaded for a trip....
Post by: Bryn on June 16, 2013, 04:54:37 PM
This has been a successful thread over on UKGSer.. I think it would work well here too.....

Not mine..but found this one on the US site.. and this is the luggage for the rider only

Clearly that rider would be better suited to a SUV!
I'm off on a wee trip later this coming week for a week, base layers, underwear, pair of trousers, pair of trainers, a few t-shirts, that's all I'm taking. What's the point of loading the bike up to that extent, I can only imagine that it adversely affect the handling of the GTR.

While I most definitely agree with you Lonewolf - we have a trip to Weymouth this weekend for the Veterans Parade on Sunday - hotel accommodation for 2 nights btw so no camping and the Mrs had me bring the panniers and topbox (47L) to the bedroom yesterday so she could work out how to fit everything !!!

I have had to book Friday off to make it all go back on the bike - her words not mine :)

Well ok, depending on the amount of crap that the future Mrs. Ros wants to bring, it may be an inch or two lower on the rear suspension, but that's about it.

Up at Loch Earn on last years tour of Scotland. Needless to say the tank bag has been ditched as it was all most impossible to do a U-turn or any type of tight turn with it on .

well I don't have this problem  wife scared  :shit: less of bikes so won't go on them  when I toured France and Italy on my GTR I never used my top box  just the panniers and bagster tank bag  when I toured the same trip on my zzr1400 the year previously I just used a tail pack and my bagster tank bag. I don't do tent's :nono: only b&bs or hotels
and my clobber consists of...
one pair jeans
4 good t/shirts or shirts for evening wear
8 throw away t/shirts for day riding.. the ones you get 4 in a pack for around £6.00 from matalan
4 pairs of undies.. after a few days just turn them inside out  if you can't wash them when getting a shower
4 pair of socks..    wash them though when getting a shower
pair of trainers

then you have enough room for the bike essentials such as spare gloves, waterproofs, e.t.c then there is the emergency items, plus all the other :shit: we need to carry.. "just in case" we need it! so there's  need to load your bike up to the extent you hardly can't see it  if my wife did come on the trips with me  I would tell her she as half a top box and one pannier  the same as me

That is actually one of the weak points of the GTR - no decent attachment points for bungy cords.
I have a big sports bag that I put on the pillion seat when I go on tour and getting the bungies on and off is dodgy to say the least.  :sweatdrop:

So do the ends of the cords on my Bungy-spider. But there are no good attachment points for the hooks like there were on the 1250 Bandit or BMW R100R that I had before.  At the back I can use the carrier frame but at the front there is nowhere really safe to put the hooks.
So where to you put the hooks at the front?  :sweatdrop:

Even with all that "comfort" Debs has, no way would you find me in a tent unless it was some fit bird wanting me for carnal fun, and then i would go back to a hotel or B&B to sleep.

Tents, no way.

That may be OK for some on a week trip to Scotland.
But when I go on a 3 week holiday to the south of France one pannier is full with tools, spare light bulbs, 1st aid kit, rain gear and 5l emergency fuel (great when you travel from Holland south because you won't safely make it on one tank to Luxemburg and you can choose where to fill up and save quite a bit of cash when travelling on toll-roads in France). Then there are the presents for the kids and grandkids (my daughter-in-law loves Irish cider and you can't get that in France so I always bring a dozen cans), some spare boots just in case and so the second pannier is full as well. That leaves the top case with a maximum load of 2.5 kg. A couple of books, spare leather jacket and my laptop and that's nearly full as well and already overloaded.
So I put a big sportsbag with clothes and whatnot on the pillion and tie it down with a bungy spider.
Makes getting on and off a bit harder but also gives you a nice back rest and reduces drag.

I have to say, some of you are scaring me with your 'needs'  :mfr_lol:

In another thread I wrote

Quite a few years ago, I was given a packing tip.
When you come back from a trip, make three piles of the stuff that you took.
1/ Stuff you took and used
2/ Stuff you took and used, but could have left behind
3/ Stuff you took but did not need.

Next trip, take pile 1, a selection from pile 2 [ might include waterproofs for example], and leave pile 3 at home.

It still works for me

Mecki, one week or three weeks it should make no difference.

Why do you need to take any additional tools to what is in the tool wallet under the seat, any serious issues, call RAC/AA etc, spare light bulbs, fair enough, but they're not going to take up any serious space. First aid kit, again, obligatory in many countries but you don't need anything excessive, just practical, hopefully you'll never need it and if you do, just dial 112 and while your waiting stick a plaster on to show willing and hope for the best.  :whistling:

Rain gear....just buy some decent kit in the first place.

Extra fuel, you trying to tell me that you you won't come across a petrol station in over 200 miles that's suitable to fill the bike up. Don't be such a tight wad, if the bike needs fuel, just fill it up.

Presents for kids and grand kids, don't buy any...they'll survive.

Spare boots, what's wrong with the normal pair, as above, just buy decent kit in the first place.

Reading material, buy it when you arrive or go for the electronic option allowing you to ditch the bulky laptop and take an iPad or netbook.

Spare jacket, why? Use the bike jacket, nobody will care less that you're wearing it to go out to shelter from the rain.

Get rid of all the shit you've mentioned above and you won't need to put a sports bag on the pillion seat and you won't then have difficulty getting on and off.

My top box was virtually empty, still had loads of room to put the helmet in. Rusty's bloody panniers were nearly empty, much to my surprise. Any dirty laundry, just dump it and buy new when you get to your destination or get home, that'll allow you additional space for a few presents if you feel you absolutely must.

Whatever you feel comfortable with.
Obviously coppers are getting paid very well so they don't join the peasants when they eventually revolt, but for us peasants with normal salaries every penny counts.
So if I can stretch the distance between tank stops until I come to the end of a toll-road (i.e. at Reims on the way back) or across the border and can fill up at a supermarket at 10+ cents less a litre and have a decent meal and/or drink without paying through the nose makes a difference to me.
I have decent gear but the trip takes 2 days rain or shine and I have been in sudden downpours and been soaked through within minutes before.
And getting into wet gear the next morning is not an option if I can avoid it.
I wouldn't buy anything with a name starting with i-, so no shite-pad or shite-phone for me, thank you very much.
I have no use for it the rest of the year, so why buy a tablet or smart-phone from another manufacturer just to save space in the top case for a couple of weeks a year?
I have a notebook of course since they stopped making laptops ages ago. But even modern notebooks are sensible to shock so putting it in a proper case is the minimum you can do.
And I take the books because I leave them there so my son can read them as well.
And no presies for the grandkids and no cider for Corinne?  way
But I guess if they were dogs you wouldn't say that.  :whistling:

Without going too far off topic.....................
Maybe some of this should be in the 'packing list' sticky, but on the subject of tools, what do we actually take with us?
I ditched the factory toolkit, but take quality tools. Quality multi-tool [ leatherman ] , 1/4 inch drive ratchet, extension, sockets up to 13mm and Allen key and screwdriver bits to fit the bike sizes [ no extras ]  6" adjustable. Cable ties, tape etc, latex gloves.
In other words tools I can reasonably expect to be able to use at the side of the road. So no engine work, major bodywork removal. I have thought of taking the right size tools for wheel removal. If you are stranded with a puncture, it may be possible to take the wheel to a repair place, rather than transport the whole bike.
But we are not doing the long way round, or trekking through Mongolia. Most of mainland Europe and beyond has phone coverage, AA/RAC coverage, and mainly, people who would be willing to help.
And unlike our stateside friends, I don't think I have seen anyone on this forum ask the question ' what firearm do you take with you, and where do you keep it' The answers to which truly show that we ARE two nations that are totally different despite speaking a common language.

If I had a tool kit I'd be dangerous. Apparently there is one under the seat for someone else to use, if needed.

When going abroad I take a small first aid kit, spare bulbs, hi-vis bibs, air compressor, torch, breathalyser kits (thx for the reminder Boomer) and the phone number of my breakdown service, etc. That lot takes up half of my top box, leaving plenty of room for her handbag and accessories, plus a pannier each for clothing, etc. Oh and thanks to Roger I now have a tank bag for my man bag and accessories!
Title: Re: Show us your bike loaded for a trip....
Post by: Boomer on June 26, 2013, 04:42:16 PM
For France don't forget to pack your one-shot breathalysers.
The law says you have to carry them but there is no fine for not carrying them.
However, Monsieur le Plod would be well within his rights to take you to the Gendarmerie for a blood test and anal probing if you didn't have one.

I pack a first aid kit, 2 hi-vis jackets, spare bulbs, toolkit good enough to do anything I could do at the roadside (which is a fair bit), gaffer tape, cable ties, and last but not least RAC breakdown cover.

we did a trip around europe last year for two weeks , one box for my clothes , one box for swmbo, topbox for bike stuff, tank bag for valubles, we dont pack anything outside of the boxes and manage just fine, that included her taking hair straightners.

we figure that we wear our biking gear all day, so just for the evening time and eating out we only take one pair of jeans each, 3 tops and 1 fleece, under wear ect.
