Title: back rest recommendation
Post by: aljaxon on June 11, 2013, 02:25:37 PM
ive searched these forums but no luck.
my 2010 caf has the Kawasaki top box and doesn't feel strong enough for my albeit petite missus to lean or rest her back against it.
are there any decent backrests available? has anyone fitted something and can recommend it?
tia

Hi

We have a Givi topbox with back rest, and it does move about a fair bit, am in the process of sussing out improvements.
The main problem is the base plate and the original Kawa back plate flex too much.

I don't think it was my imagination, but I seem to remember seeing a separate backrest that bolted to the grab rails using the four bolts that the luggage plate fix to.
Might be worth an internet search

You could look at that, but I don't know if you can fit top box on this luggage rack...Otherwise, this company is serious, and good quality metal.

That's the one I was thinking of FB

does that allow the use of the Kawasaki top box?

edit just read the backrest needs to be removed if using luggage....
in the mounting holes drop down it only mentions GIVI..

or can I fasten the existing top box base plate to that ?

I can use autocad and could easily draw up a baseplate for my local laser cutter to do something in thick ally.
something that would allow the use of the top box or original mount and holes to fasten a back rest.
I would prefer something off the shelf tho

I have the Projetk D luggage rack not the back rest ( I use Corbin seat) but screws are longer than OEM for the rack as luggage rack is thicker than the plastic one from Kawa, screw holes are the same, so maybe with longer screws you would be able to put the the top box, what about clearance though from the front Top box ,would it or not get in the way of the back rest?? Maybe drop an email to Projekt D along with specs of your top box, they may be able to enlighten you on that...

will do
I am surprised there isn't a back rest with base plate that can accept the std top box.
my wife is tiny so the reduction in space isn't a problem

I have the Kawi 47 box mounted on Phils rack, slid all the way back it fits nicely with the Corbin passenger backrest, mama loves it, it's also nice for her to have when the trunks not mounted too...

The more I see of your bike the more the colour is growing on me. I wonder if it would well that well on a Versys 1000  :whistling:

Muzzy twin pipe set up looks fantastic, why oh why did KHI make such a balls up of the standard spud launcher I'm sure they could have improved the design and still incorporated all the emission crap

Be aware ! Corbin back rest is part of the seat and cannot be added to stock seat, there is a square hole in the back of the Corbin seat and you insert the back rest in it and secure it with allen key underneath.
So you have to order the whole stuff, except if you already have the Corbin seat without the back rest which would make no sense !!

Also be aware that Corbin seats are "firm" and if you don't have a Corbin shaped arse then you will be in agony after a while.
My personal recommendation would be to get a decent solid metal rack to replace the stupid plastic thing, mount the Kawi box to that and fit a backrest to the box.
Chances are she will never use the backrest anyway.

Yep, the backrest is perfect height and size for mama, supports the middle of her back as it should, she loves it!

ZG, I notice you have some form of protection on the top of the panniers, what is it and how is it stuck on?

Yes LW, they are from TechSpec, work great IMO to keep mama's boot scuffs off my side cases...

They just peel and stick on, easy to remove and don't harsh up the paint either.
