Many moons ago I indicated on here that a lighter bike would be more suitable for myself and Gill
So after much thought and shopping around I've ordered a Kawasaki Versys 1000 today
I'll have some bits to sell from my GTR once I've removed them, and they will be listed soon at a££ordable prices.
I still intend to 'haunt' this forum so ya haven't seen the back of me just yet (I can already hear the groans and applause from here) :mfr_lol:
    :mfr_lol:
Blimey, what have I started  :whistling:
But...but... but....
CHAIN DRIVE ?
Is there something in the water up in The Lakes? :mfr_lol: Sorry to hear you have decided to switch bikes, what's your plans with the GTR, trade in or sell privately? We know someone on here dont we who's looking for a replacement, pristine GTR, I've sent him a text. :whistling:

Well there's plenty water up here Steve. I've p/xed my GTR with MCO (Motorcycles Orrell) where I purchased it from, but it won't be there for about 10 days or so... it might be just right for Asif
I blame Geoff totally :mfr_lol: actually I've needed to change for a lighter machine for a number of reasons, it just makes sense, as I'm not going to be touring the Continent anymore but will be continuing to bash the 'B' roads and if we do plan a weekend away on the bike then the big Versys will handle that too.
Incidentally here's a couple of pics from last Sundays ride out, the White one is Geoffs new bike....lovely innit

And parked next to my GTR at Alston filling Station

how much lighter is the versy than the gtr, probably a route i will go down eventually , last big euro tour i did was knackering with all the weight !
And I was so looking forward to going out with another GTR rider..... :-(
Versys 1000 is an ok bike! :-) not the flagship model of the GTR.... and as has been said ---- Chain Drive!
How long will it be? Didn't you try a "Dual Sport"?
We will look on! :-)
Neil
nice one rog  you 2 will want to be known as " vice versa versys" next!! :mfr_lol:
Good luck with the new bike.
If they are getting too heavy have you considered getting one with an extra wheel, never falls over

That was one of the major factors in my decision
The GTR curb Mass is 304 Kg (ABS) and the Versys is 239Kg, which means that the Versys is 65 Kg lighter than the GTR. that is just over 10 stones difference. obviously this makes a difference when riding the bike, but equally as important is the fact that the Versys is a whole lot easier to push around, its a bit like having a pillion on board and not having a pillion on board

Don't worry Neil I'll still let you ride out with me and I must say that the nVersys is a lot more than an "ok Bike" ...you should try one, you are right it isn't the Flagship model of the range, but I've had three GTRs now and it's necessary for me to get a lighter bike for a whole raft of reasons, and because I'm a Kawasaki fan through and through, I chose a Versys as it ticks all my needs boxes
Chain Drive ??? no problem Ive had bloody loads of bikes over the years with Chain Drive, in fact I've still got 4 others in't Rev Shed which are Chain Driven
Modern Chains are so much better than those of yesteryear, but you young 'uns probably wont remember those days :mfr_lol:
Rog.. did consider the ltr versys when I was looking for a replacement for my zx6r ninja as my second bike  but decided on the 650 versys which is ideal for commuting fuel wise and pottering about on  I've always been "one extreme to the other" as far as owning bikes are concerned, suppose that's why the ZZR and the GTR didn't last long having both at the same time
p.s your right about modern chains  if you look after the chain, clean and oil or dry lube it every 600 miles or so they will last for 20,000 miles plus  and if you have still got the bike when that time comes, the chain and sprockets are cheap enough and easily replaced
Bloody "Ell Geoff ... what have you started ??? :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
Just seen one advertised at Dk Motorcycles, brand new in white with panniers £8999, a lot of bike for the money.
Test rode one a while ago. Was an OK bike, but not pretty from any angle IMO.
Hope you are happy with it though Roger, a capable machine and I can see your rationale.
Keep posting!!
All joking aside, the GTR has been out, what, 6-7 years with only a facelift?
Quite a few of us have 'moved on' - perhaps the mighty GTR is reaching the end of it's natural lifespan?
(Still an awesome piece of machinery though :punk: )

don't agree with it being ugly and just a ok bike  the 650 and the 1ltr versys both look  for what they are supposed to represent which is a adventure type bike  and both bikes are very capable as all round machines
Didn't say ugly. And it is a very capable machine, as I said.
Horses for courses though.

where I come from... being "not pretty" is ugly  but fair enough, I stand corrected  I didn't take into account that where you come from may be more tolerant such cases :mfr_lol:

True Chris, and I agree the Versys isn't the prettiest bike on the planet, but I have to say its looks have grown on me.
I've been mulling this decision over in my head for many months now, that coupled with the fact that I, like all of us, have to have practical consideration about my decisions has led me to the big Versys, it will tick my biking needs boxes.
My bikes have always been 'toys' and not my 'essential/first' means of transport, and that is another consideration.
Chris you are also right, in that the GTR has only seen facelifts over the last 6+ years, and I've had three of them now, so its time for a change. The GTR is and will always be an awesome and under-rated machine, that in many ways leaves the competition for dead......oh yessssssss :biker3:
I've posted a list of items that are for sale from my GTR

Repeating it over and over again doesn't make it true.
The improvements in 2010 were more than just a 'facelift'. :hammer:
But you are right that since then there haven't been any changes except different colours.
Maybe because there isn't much that can be improved.
ive been thinking about a veradero/v strom type bike for a while , but i dont like vtwins, i assumed , wrongly that the versys was another vtwin, didnt realise that it is a straight4, tbh i will probably get out of the gtr in the next 2 years and a versys it could well be. I think id get a used one first just to see how we get on with it. Looks wise its not prettier or uglier than the gtr. I never thought the Gtr was pretty anyway,
maybe its my age and bike design overtaking me but i cant really think of many attainable bikes that are pretty. I had a zzr1200 which i thought was drop dead gorgeous , not as capable as the gtr but damn priddy
I think the GTR will go on and on and on, there will be changes either minor or major, yes there are other bikes with more gizmos etc but then again more to go wrong. I will stick with the GTR as long as i can. I too will change sometime but im not ready just yet. The GTR is my piece of sanity, as some of you know i also have the Ducati Monster for the blast with the boys, that is my piece of in-sanity, im 53 years old but feel 25, on saturday mornings i grow horns and have a shroud of red mist, that is my Adrenalin rush. Good luck to the versys boys i am sure you too will have the same rush.
Nicely put Zedman ... like your attitude ... on this occasion !  :mfr_lol:
I see some similarities between Zed and our old friend Mogster :mfr_lol:

I will take that as a compliment, i liked Mogsters comments and rants, he told it how it was no BS, the problem is people can easily take it the wrong way and see some coments as offensive. If you can give it, you should be prepared to take it also, i always find if you put a :mfr_lol: after your comments you should take it in good heart, lifes too short, Get a grip and Deal with it.

well there is a good side to this  while there having a go at you they're leaving me alone :mfr_lol:
Got to admit 2k you do come in for a fair bit of stick ( mainly from the pensioners :mfr_lol: )
By the way i hear you have a 1441 ZZR in black with Green flashes and a 650 Versys, you have not mentioned that ( for at least a nano second :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol: )
Are you aware i am on my 4th GTR ( just thought i would drop that one in ) :mfr_lol:
I do not want you to feel i am trying to invade your popularity 2K so i will sit back and watch you and Mecci slog it out on the virtue's of the GTR /ZZR Debate :sleep1: :sleep1:

I couldn't agree more about the ZZR1200 that was one fantastic looking bike, mine was silver, utterly mint and I rue the day I sold it. Funnily enough I also dont think the GTR is a handsome bike, much like the big Versys it's not ugly, but neither is it a thing of beauty. Regarding the Versys I had a test ride on one and was amazed how good it was, far more sprightly than the GTR, better brakes, and for me far more fun to ride. But in saying that the GTR is also a fantastic bit of kit. Ya pays ya money blah blah.

My dear scouse friend, are you EVER going to show up at the bridge on a Sunday? :whistling: :mfr_lol:
MCN highly rated the Big Versys in a test of Adventure bikes a few weeks ago, can't remember the exact date but if you go onto their web site you should be able to read the test, cracking bike. If i were to get rid of the Monster i would seriously consider the Brute.
I'm not doing anything this Sunday! What Bridge? ;-)
There are lots of folk on the Versys forum who have had a test ride on the big Versys, and been amazed how good they are. Roger and myself being just 2 of them.  and the rest as they say is history.
Better get to my dealer then and take a look ... :innocent: :innocent:
