Just serviced my bike myself for the first time. I have to say a bit of a pig in terms of the plugs.
Anyway some surprises.
1st Found all the bit had been overtightened by the last dealer, Sump plug washer bent and squased.
Biggest surprise was shaft oil filler cap. I have bent a good size 'Snap on Screw driver' trying to get the cap off, it will not budge and must have been put on by someone with super human strength.
Can anyone help me with how I might get it off
Also web site where I can buy another one, I have googled and e bayed but cannot find one for sale.
a tight fitting coin and a pair of mole grips , i heard of a guy using a dollar coin so dont know what our equiv would be
Sump washer plug is designed to be crushed and replaced every service.
Shaft drive plug is also always very tight!
As stated, a coin or similar that fits snug and a pair of mole grips. It will move!
VIPER AND WINSTON
REALLY GRATEFUL TO YOU BOTH.
WILL LET YOU KNOW HOW I GET ON
THANKYOU
MARTYN
Rippers I found a £1 coin fits just nicely in the slot and used along with some mole grips will do the job nicely, don't be surprised if it bends the coin a bit though as mine did.

Don't worry I still spent it!
Hi Lonewolf
Many thanks for that.
Next question anyone know of a website where I can buy a new cap?
I have Googled and cannot find one. I will probably go to my nearest dealer to get one.
Thanks for all the feedback guys you have really helped. Thank you
Have you buggered up the original cap? I'd just order one from a dealer. The cap is about £13 and the gasket which goes behind it is about a £1.50 approx. Not wanting to tell you how to suck eggs just make sure when you replace the final gear oil you dont turn the rear wheel, keep it static. Apologies if you already knew that.
and lube the new cap with a bit of oil before screwing up
eggs well and truley sucked :embarrassed:
Hi
Yes I have ordered one today and it should be in the post in about 1days. I went to a Kawaski dealer to order it. They do not stock them.
I have never serviced the bike before it has always been done at the dealers. I notice the oil cap slot is slightly damaged from someone having had a go at it.
Lonewolf I now have 4 pound coins bent like yours and it will still not bloody budge.
What gets me is you pay good money to get the bike serviced and by doing it myself I am now having grave misgivings about what has been done previously
Rippers, there's tight and there's ridiculously tight! Are you using mole grips as well but it still won't budge?
I used the end of a motorcycle tyre lever to do mine. A nice snug fit across the whole slot
any value in going out for a run and getting the final drive warmed up, £1 coins are quite soft , some large stainless washers might be stronger , decent mole grips are a must, not pliers

- ebay is your friend.
- the engine oil cap + final drive cap are the same.
- makes it safer (vandal resistant) and also easier to remove (with tool).
.
thanks for the info and the website for the cap.
I think I will try a run and see what happens. Certainly cold this thing will not budge and I have used mole grips and even a rubber hammer to gently give the cap a knock.
Will keep going.
