hi has any body done a rear wheel bearing change . how does it come out , had a ride up to devils bridge today . got half way and the bike made a horrible clanking noise or grateing sound , had to stop and get the aa to take me home £115 upgrade , have took the rear wheel off and all I can feel is a rough feel when I spin the wheel . god I hope it is the bearing , bikes done 10000m . can you tell if its the shaft that's at fault . it turns ok by hand , any body had the same problem , am waiting for my mate to call and give a second opinion , garry
clonking and grating does not sound like a wheel bearing , could be a shaft drive failure, listen dont fret , you worst case senario is a replacement unit which you can easily pick up off ebay for about £250
hopefully it is a bearing collapse
ftp://had a second opinion and its looking like it is some thing in the box on the end of the drive shaft .took the rubber bung of and the bearing looks to be ok , it is something beyond that , there is no play in the drive shaft when you turn the wheel it moves straight away , the clacking noise is at the other end .this is a nightmare I thought these bikes where meant to be bullet proof , it should not fail after 10000m . I will try Kawasaki but don't hold much hope .
Nightrider, try 'peeling' back/lifting the rubber cover on the front of the drive shaft unit and squirt some chain lube in there, it will probably be a dry joint
get the back wheel out and check that nothing has got into the splines , its real easy to check.
the drive shafts are very reliable as long as the oil is changed regular but sadly this often does get overlooked by owners and dealers that just are too used to chain bikes, my kawasaki dealer didnt do shaft oil on the first service and i would have never known if id not marked the filler cap with a pen.
The update on this is that I had a bike mecanic come down to have a look and started up the bike and it was silent all noise had gone , I felt a right twit , going to take it out for a ride to see if it does it again , I have took all the plastics off the bike so it will have to stop raining first , the noise was definitaley coming from the Gearbox side , the other chap that had a look thought it was the clutch at fault , we shall see ,,,,
Put your bike on the mainstand and rotate the rear wheel, without the engine running, just to see if there's a noise from the drive train
Don't want to scare you but this is my post concerning my bevel gear

Now
When the bike is cold everything is tight. Rotate the back wheel by hand there maybe a slight tick.
When the bike is hot everything is a bit looser.
Had the rubber cover off and the bearing felt nice and tight , if its dry on fri will take it for a good run and see whats happens , results to follow
It turns out it is the rear wheel bearing which is at fault , it has almost collapsed , it must have been holding its self together and making a noise when it felt like it , thank god for that The cheap option. , Still it lasted 10000m , discs .shock. . Bearing. , what next I wonder ....."
why would a rear wheel bearing fail at 10k, im amazed
Didn't MG have a collapsed bearing recently?

MG :cool:valerio.
Get some decent bearings in. The factory Kawa ones are crap.
AND DON'T JETWASH THE BIKE!
If Jetwash is your only option, leave it dirty.
Jetwashing will strip all the grease from inside the bearing.
Use a regular hosepipe with a spray attachment and a bucket & sponge.
