Morning all
I've seen various comments around people's experience with different tyres however, as anyone ever used the ContiMotion's on their GTR?
http://www.tyretectrading.com/store/viewItem.asp?idProduct=1728
I've used these on a 1200 Bandit a few years ago and they were okay.
Another option is the Metzeler Z6 http://www.mandp.co.uk/productInfo.aspx?catRef=902805
Thanks
Graeme
i only had stock tyres and PR3s on my GTR, the pr3 is the tyre that nearly all GTR riders rave about. I had the metzlers on my zzr1200 and they were good. The link you put up is a good price, 139 for the pair ! PR3 rear is that alone
The tyre that seem be favoured at the moment ar the PR3 and or the Angels.
For me although the PR3 are one of the more expensive tyres on the market they do seem to porvide better value for money as I am tending to get 8-10k mikes out of the rear with good levels of grip in all conditions.
I do look at Conti Motions a while a go and I was tempted but as I hadn't heard or seen any real world feedback from other riders as to what they were like I decided to give them a miss.
Steve
A couple of the Americans have tried the Contimotions but were not impressed with either grip or longevity.
As with all such things you get what you pay for.
Cheap tyres are,...... cheap.
I used a Z6 front on my GTR1000 and while it was good it is a 10+ year old design and doesn't come close to the grip/feel/longevity of any modern tyres.
The Z8 Interact is closer but again, several people on the US forums tried them and mostly reverted to the PR2/3 or the Angels.
You just spent £1000s on a GTR, why ruin the experience by buying "okay" tyres when excellent tyres are available.
Thanks for all your feedback and opinions.
I take your points so will go with PR3's or Angels when the time comes. Soon I expect...
The PR3's are excellent, and I have a few miles left on mine, just enough I believe to get me to Scotland and back in a few weeks time ... :whistling: :whistling: ... but I shall try the Angel Gt's as they have such a good write up and I would ask "why indeed not?" .....
Just picked up a new pair of boots for the bike have had conti motions before and no problems from them and at this price be rude not to....

Hi
So do you fit them yourself?
What about balancing?
Richard
Disappointed with PR3`s at about 6,000 miles they seem to have gone off. There`s still plenty of meat left on them maybe another 3 to 4,000 miles but the handling gone all to pot, especially on slower wet cornering, there's a lot movement both ends and feels funny turning in, I`v lost confidence in them . Never had any trouble with PR2`s handled well right down to their last few miles.
Going to try some Angel GT`s next, seem to be getting good reviews.

No I take them to my local bike shop who fit them and balance them for me normally works out about £15 all in
That's a good price Rexr, I have to pay £25 per wheel at my local workshop. The guy I use also does all my servicing and ad-hoc maintenance as I'd be dangerous with a tool kit!
Maybe I will try the ContiMotions after all lol. I've got Maxxis on from when I bought the bike a few weeks ago but the rear is badly squared off and I'm not feeling confident with them on.

£15 sounds reasonable.
Winnsworld - £25 a wheel sounds steep, especially in a garage you use regularly
Mmmmmm maybe it's time to shop around for my tyre fitting needs.... Anyone know of somewhere in or around south east essex?

South West Essex any good?? A12 near the junction with M25. Fitting a set of Angel GT's for me tomorrow, ride in/ride out for £301. I'll let you know how it goes, and if they're as good as the reviews say they are.
I'm enjoying mine, and when I had the GTR I had the Angel ST's
Won't be disappointed

Silverback, you are in for a treat.
I use Universal Tyres in Billericay.
Their prices are competitive and the service always good and efficient.
I take in loose rims and paid £290 for both PR3s all in.
If you decide to use them call ahead and reserve your tyres.
If I was looking in SE Essex I'd probably go for Julian Sopers (London Road, Leigh-on-Sea) or John E. Vines in Rayleigh.
Never been steered wrong or messed about by either of them. Always good service.

Seems a bit steep, just been quoted £260 all in for a set of Angel GT`s (Buckley Tyre Services, nr Chester) ride in/out.

Boomer,
I've used Universal before and I was very impressed, I'm afraid I'm being lazy though, gonna get someone else to take the wheels off and do it for me this time.
Went to have a look in John E. Vines a couple of months ago, and they appear to have ceased trading. Sad cos I remember them from their days in Leigh on Sea.
Cheers
Clive
I think John Vines closed early last year sometime, retirement I believe. I bought a 600 fazer from him for commuting. It was a great little bike and therein lies the problem, a little too cramped for me... Sold it to my nephew for his commuting.
I want to go to Scotland too

Have no experience with the gtr but with my BMW mezzler were the best
Gtr: Changed after 10k kms front b21 by b23 ; after 17k kms still the same rear b21. Now need to change also.
I am very glad with the better b23 ( grip) ; guess I take the b23 rear one too:-)
Although they are expensive here... best price\quality...?
Angel GT's fitted yesterday, ended up at £290 all in ride in/ride out.
Put about 150 miles on them so far, and have to say I am VERY impressed with them.
Beegee, Sciotland is good for empty roads and big empty spaces, but there is a reason why it is big and empty.
It's cold, wet, and windy. Not all the time to be fair, but if you manage to get 3 days in a row with no rain it's a :censored: miracle.
Personally I would choose the Ardennes over Scotland every time. For you the Ardennes are only 2 hours away.
More traffic yes, but great roads and better weather and MUCH better food that Scotland.

So far have done a 100 miles and alls well tyres are very grippy and stable in corners and have only a couple of mil left to the edge... great front end feel, going to malliag for a run tomorrow so will see wot they are like after 300 odd miles
I am new to touring and just bought a gtr caf and its fitted with new-ish bt021;s
im a bit of a bridgestone fan I have bt45's on my old rd350A and bt16's on my 200 zx6r. on my 6 I like the way you can lean right over on the 16's no chicken strips and I can brake heavily right up to the apex of corners cranked right over and suffer no loss of grip.
only downside is they don't last long, the fronts go v'd and the rears go bald in the middle with loads of tread left on outer.
I tired bt 23's on the 600 and found I could corner almost as fast - cranked right over there was a bit of traction loss. the 23 didn't last much longer than the 16 so wasn't worth the sacrifice of grip.
I am assuming the 21 will be the same as the 23? not very durable but loads of grip?
I am just learning about stiff and hard carcasses combined with different pressures to give different grip factor. but to be honest its all a bit too much.
I just want a decent tyre
is there such a thing as a grippy( no rear chicken strip territory ) /long lasting tyre?
I am used to changing tyres on the zx6 every 1500 miles.
what am I gonna experience with the bt021's?
apart from a tyre change in 2000 miles
Modern tyres are simply stunning these days. The progress over the last few years has been huge.
My favourite for the GTR are Michelin Pilot Road 3s, or PR3s as they are known. 10,000 miles, astounding wet grip, and enough in the dry to scrape the footpegs on the GTR. I think they would probably overheat on track, but they are a miracle road tyre.
I am trying a set of Pirelli Angel GTs at the moment. Supposed to last as long as the PR3s, but too early for me to tell. Dry grip is good on them, wet grip not quite as good as the PR3s in my opinion. I will be going back to PR3s next time.
Don't obsess about removing chicken strips. This is down to the tyre profile and width as much as rider heroics. In my experience, the rear tyre on the GTR will wear all the way to the edge, but I don't get within 10mm of the edge on the front.
Martin.
I appreciate it's a different bike, but the Angel GT's compare quite well with the PR3's on the K16.
Wet weather grip is likewise comparable. I will be hard pushed to decide which to put on next time round, although I may explore the new Bridgestone's - but not on the recommended list yet....
ive never tried any Michelin pilot having been told that they are a harder compound than people think but have a softer carcass which fools you into thinking you have a stickier tyre.
it isn't as sticky but grips better due to the softer carcass. which I suppose is the end result and all we are bothered about.
I don't obsess about chicken strips I was just using that as a barometer of my riding style. my zx6r front ive only ever got rid of a handful of times. most rides its 5mm sometimes 10. and I know that no chicken strips means you cant lean much more. (more than you would think mind...)
and when the front is going the rear usually squirms as its close to the limit
I think I will try the pr3's next. those mileages sound amazing compared to what im used to.
I cant corner in wet weather. mental block from tt100's and roadrunners in the seventies.
that's why I have never done track days. knowing my luck it will be damp and I could go round faster on a push bike.
so until the next set of tyres what are the 21's gonna do for me?

Mine came from new - as I think they all do - on 021s. They were good tyres for about 6,000 miles. Not great, certainly not as good as PR3s, but good nonetheless. The next 2,000 miles were interesting, when the 021s square off, they feel quite nervous tipping into a corner. Plenty of grip once you are over, but very flighty or nervous feeling to start with.
Regarding your wet weather riding comment, you will be stunned at the PR3s. When Bike magazine tested them, they were managing knee down in the wet on a 1250 Bandit. I never pushed that hard myself, but they gave me the same confident feeling in the wet as the full race Wets I use on my race bike. Truly stunning tyres.
@Winston, regarding your comment on GTs vs. PR3s, I do think the GTs have comparable wet grip to the PR3s (magazine tests I have read seem to concur with this too) but on my GTR at least, they do not give anywhere near the same confidence to me. Yes they do grip, but I always have a half-second 'will they, won't they' type feeling on them. As you say though, may be a bike thing rather than a tyre thing.
Martin.
are the oem 021's (the ones fitted as std) different or inferior to the aftermarket ones we buy from the shop?
im sure I read that they aren't mc? or 3 compounds instead of 5?
I cant see why that would be but I did read it somewhere?
my bike has 6300 previous owner miles on it and what look like fairly new tyres
I just cannot believe that knee down is possible in the wet.
I see the racers get their knees down. but then again they also fall off....
Was chatting to a couple of Douane officers in France last week. They were riding FJ1300s shod with PR3s . They reckon they were the best tyre that they had tried and they had tried the lot. No sign of any chicken strips. The hero pegs had be ground down to stumps and the pannier rails had been grounded as well. Pretty good recommendation IMO

If you had bought your bike of LW I would say they are still the original tyres. :whistling:
Otherwise that sounds about right. My original rear O21 lasted 4500 miles but then I replaced it with a Pirelli Angel ST.
That one lasted 8000 and felt a lot better.
The front O21 lasted about 7500 but by then started to deform quite badly.
Sort of V-shape, so I replaced it with an Angel ST as well.
I am now on a 190-55 Angel ST and I reckon it actually handles better than the 190-50 on the twisties.
Since the angel still shows I reckon it will stay on until next year and I don't know what I will put on then.
I guess it will depend on price since by then the front will need replacing as well.
Since I don't commute and avoid riding in the wet I don't really need a specialist wet tyre like the PR3 so probably Angel GT will be first choice.
im thinking it has had new tyres fitted because as he rode it out of his trailer the tyre was rubbing against the hugger and making a right racket.
its either new hugger or new tyre. but a new hugger would have been fastened with enough clearance?
these tyres surely cannot have done 6300 miles as they look 50 miles old, (unless he is a dab hand with a soldering iron)
all this touring malarkey is new to me, I didn't even know there was a tyre company called angel.
my wife may have heard of them......
I hate wet riding (so does the wife, in fact she hates any kind of riding )) so a specialist wet tyre would be wasted with me.
Just installed Pilot Road 3. Saw on net that it get great reviews so let's try.
Before had Metzeler Z8 for 8000 km, and would probably lasted thousand more, however I am planing trip to Istanbul next week an I am not sure if they will last for another 3500 km +. I was more than satisfied with previous set.

Take no notice of Mecki, you are very welcome on this forum and you have bought a great bike and its your choice of bike which I hope will give you plenty grin factor
Angel is a brand of tyre..see here :-
http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/121116447477?var=lv&var=sbar&_lwgsi=y&cbt=y&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=66&ff19=0
However the hugger should not be rubbing against your tyre and you should put the bike on its mainstand, rotate the wheel and identify where its rubbing, it may just be a slightly bent mounting bracket, which is usually easily fixable
Please DO NOT be afraid to ask any question on here as its a learning curve and the vast majority of members will be more than happy to offer sensible advice and help
EDIT: just thinking ...if the tyres look new just check the tyre size.....it should be 190/50ZR17

PR3's here, love em!
So here I am just 5,000 miles after putting ContiMotion's on my GTR (only £130 plus fitting) and the rear tyre, despite having plenty of tread on the centre, has knackered sidewalls!
Now I don't chuck it about very much and mainly straight-line it commuting and touring..... maybe I did give it a hammering on those French D roads after all
Looks like I will be shopping for new tyres again very soon.... after the bike gets back from a service (48k on the clock) - my mechanic says the plugs and air filter are a bugger to reach, hence a couple of hours effort!
Expensive biking this year (as my VFR waits to go in for replacement front forks and brake pads) :surrender:
You did well to get 5k out of them on a GTR. I only got 4k out a rear and 6k out the front when I had them on an FJR.
The 023 s I have on the GTR are nearly ready for changing after 6k rear and nearly 8k front....they have only been on the bike since july !! :surrender:
Deffo PR3 s next.......£200 fitted
After discussing where and how I've covered 5,000 miles with my mechanic, he suggests the Pyrenees, etc. at 40C may have something to do with it. The extra heat and hard riding may have worn down the sidewall (impressive riding I'm thinking LOL).
As I've got to pay for the service tomorrow I've bought the same rear tyre from MandP at just £89 including delivery to get me back on the road, particularly whilst there's plenty of life in the front tyre.
However, I do believe I will be purchasing PR3's when the next time comes...
You won't go wrong with the PR3's as everyone knows how good they are ... If I hadn't gone to the dark side I was going to try a set of Pirelli Angel Gt's which have done very well in many tests and reviews... only to try them as I am always happy to "try' something else and of course if you don't like them you can always change back ... at the moment I am looking at Michelin again .. a set of Anekke 3's ... £234 fitted, so a little cheaper than I was paying for the Gtr but that is not a dealer price !

Could that just be the warmer climate suiting those tyres though ?
If you live in the north of France, climate is not that warm...reviews say it handles extremely well in the wet, a better wear and tear, more even throughout. Harder compound than PR3 so they may even last a bit longer, too soon and too new to say.
I have been running the Angel GTs myself for 6,000 miles now, after 3 sets of PR3s in a row. Like Rusty, I though I should at least try something else.
They are good tyres, but not outstanding like the PR3s. Dry grip about the same as the PR3s, wet grip not as good (though this is where the PR3s are simply astonishing), wear rates look to be about the same to me. Only downside of a PR3 seems to be an apparent higher likelihood of getting punctures (I have had, and repaired 2 myself), but this is hardly scientific.
I shall be going back to PR3s next time, though I would say if you mainly ride in decent weather, the GTs would be a great tyre.
Martin.
Martin, good to know. French report handling the wet as good as PR3, UK rain must be thicker or different !! Nonetheless, interesting to get feedbacks from this tire set.
Nice one Martin .. glad to see someone else out there likes to try something new !
Hi, All
This is my first posting, i have just registered today after meeting someone in cumbria a few weeks ago who recommended the site. I have had some new Bridgestone T30's fitted about 1600 miles ago and they are a great advance on the BT023's. After 1600 miles they still look like new. Heading off to Europe on Tuesday and will be covering around 2700 miles with a pillion and fully loaded, so i will see how they do on the Alpine passes. At the moment i would recomend them.
Hurry back and let us know as i am due to replace my 023 s shortly :mfr_lol:
Have a great time......

Mr Volvo, who did you meet up in Cumbria who recommended the site, were you by any chance at the Tanhill Inn? I remember speaking to someone up there not too long ago on a GTR.
:185: to this site Volvo2012 which I know you will find helpful, friendly, good fun and informative.
Do let us know who, where and when you were talking to about the GTR site, I sometimes meet GTR owners at Devils Bridge and as a rule I recommend that they enrol on here
Hey Mr Volvo ..... :185: and don't forget to take lots of pictures to share with us all !
Hi,
It was at Tanhill Inn a few weeks ago, there were two people on GTR's, they recomended the site. I have found some of the info on the site very useful, but only just got around to logging on. I will let you know how we get on in Europe and how the T30's do. Thanks for the welcome.
