Broken bracket on frame :censored:..... Just been putting baby away in her garage and as I lifted her to put on the center stand and I heard a crack :censored:. Because she is so heavy I use the rear guard from mcenterprises to make it easier to lift...
Well the bracket that the suspension adjuster & passenger foot rest all fix to has broken. :censored:
Priced up a new frame and it would be £547.52....
Ive decided to take the rear frame off, have it welded up and re powder coated...
I can see lots and lots of stress coming on
Debs, it's only stress if you let it be, in reality it's getting to know your bike better, by removing the offending part you will see other nice stuff, and getting in repaired and powder coated will make it look nice and dandy.
And afterwards you can sit back with a coffee and admire a job well done, oh and tell others how you sorted it.
Happy Fettling.
Alan
Thank you Alan..
Im just gutted that the complete rear end has to come off just to fix the bracket.
I guess there could be an easier way by just getting it welded while in situ, but I like a job to be done properly
Looking at it I reckon it could be welded in place provided you can move any wiring and plastic away from the area, you could then simply paint it black as plastic covers the frame anyway.
But it's a personal thing.
I shall be coming down to Poole one day soon and expect to see the flower bike and owner while I am there.

Yes Alan that is it..
If the frame is covered with plastic, then would it make more sense to just change it?
What do you suggest I do?
Get the ebay jobbie and keep life simple
Depends really. If you have a mate who owns a welder I bet it could be done in ten mins in situ.
If you have to pay for the welding though, the frame from ebay would probably work out cheaper.

I don't know anyone who owns a welder..
Think I will go for one from fleabay but not the one Alan listed.. That one has the rear bent and I dont know how easy it would be to straighten it...

Yeh if you have to straighten the one on ebay then it might be as well to take yours to a welder Debs. I would imagine you'd only get charged an hours labour anyway
debs take a trip down to any reputable car body shop,it should be quite an easy job to remove any flammable parts cover the bike with a fire retardant blanket and have your bracket dressed up and mig welded back on, then give it a coat of black smootherite, if you dont ask first you will never know.
Well we'll, my 10 plate has corrosion on the same frame just by the welded join, ask Mr K about it, not covered by warranty I was told. I'll going to rub it down, remove the rust then paint it with Hammerite black
i think you will find that the hammerite smooth will do a better job, same protection as the hammerite but with a silky smooth finish from a brush,
I took the hanger off and can see the break quite easy...
Ive posted on the Poole Quay Bike Night facebook page in the hope someone can help me.. If I can avoid buying a 2nd hand one I will
Hi Debs
Bad luck with the bracket, look on the bright side - it could have broken of when someone was on the back....
Having had a quick look at the one on mine it is made of steel and as said above anyone who is reasonably handy with a Mig / Mag welder should be able to clean it up and weld it back in place.
Will need the plastic bits taking off within 12" or so, and a large area around it covered to protect from spatter (flying bits of glowing steel). You can get mats made for the job, or a few sheets of leather cut out the back of an old sofa work well.
I would offer to do it, but I am a bit far away
Try your local MOT repair garage or body shop, and if you can strip the bits that are in the way off first the welding will be a 20min job

:gun_bandana:
Ya damaged it! :-)
Neil
Typical Debs, I could have welded it for you but not exactly close to you... I think it would be better welded than buying a secondhand subframe as you could end up buying the same problem. Will not be a problem for any competent welder though.
Lucky it didn't give with a passenger stepping up unto the bike, could have toppled over.
Good luck with it.

is it steel or aluminium ? ali is difficult to weld

I thought it was going to be Ali as I am sure the Kawa advertising said it was Alloy frame to save weight bla bla bla, but its magnetic so steel it is. Maybe only the main frame is Ali, will have another play with the magnet tonight.
Its steel because the solder joint has a slight showing of rust.

Steel is an alloy since it is a mixture of elements (mostly iron and carbon but you can have steel with no iron in it at all).
What you can find out with a magnet is if a steel contains mainly iron or not.
:smartass:
surely all steel has iron in it else it wouldn't be steel??
steel without iron is not steel
did you sort the frame out Debs?
