Hi all, new to the forum and was hoping for a little bit of advice. I am considering buying a GTR1400, and was wondering if there are any common problems to look out for. I have seen a 2008 model at Chorley Yamaha, with 29k on the clock, full luggage and full dealer service history. I have only seen photos, however the guy in the shop seemed genuine over the phone and said it was an excellent bike, however he said it was an import!
Are there any issues with imports?
I am P/X my ST1100, which has been a reliable bike, but fancy a bit more get up and go.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated down here in South Wales.

Hi Ant and welcome to this mad house.. :mfr_lol:
Dont worry about the milage.. I bought my baby with 32k on the clock and Im now on 49500.
Its an awesome bike that will just keep going and going.. You will get lots advice from others on here very soon..
Im liking that top box.. If you get the bike you will have to let me know what make it is
im not aware of any issues with imports, often called parrellel bikes or grey imports, usually the only difference is kmph speedo and possible headlight angles. When you come to sell the bike you may get beaten up on the price just because its an import ! especially from a dealer. Some main dealers have an issue with servicing imports . the bike originally would have been about 1500 less to buy V a uk bike
If its cheaper than uk bikes then i guess its ok , factor in about 10-15% price difference , in my opinion

Thanks to all for the replies, looks like I am going to be the proud owner of a GTR1400 :biker3:
Hello Ant and od course "welcome" ! The Gtr is a soooooper dooooper bike that will go on for ever ... as Debs says " don't worry about the milaege " ... reaslly, these are computer made bikes, made to precision standards etc with PLENTY of get up and go .. you WILL not be disappointed I can assure you ...
Let us know how you get on ..
Look at it this way... unless a bike is built in Britain it is an import which means all jap bikes are imports.
Just because it doesn't come through the official Uk Kawasaki network doesn't mean it's a different bike with unique faults.
If it's already been mot'd here it should have been checked for headlights that dip the correct way, if not then make sure the dealer checks it as headlights can be expensive.
That's the main concern I would have.
KMH speedo's can use overlays as I have done with mine, and I prefer the white overlay to the black clocks anyway.
It's a great bike and I certainly don't regret changing to one.
It's a lot more exciting than a Pan, I got rid of my ST1100 because it was just so boring.
Hi And Welcome,
Share the same name so will have to call you 'Dec' :tt2: :whistling:
Ask for a years MOT :-) http://www.chorleyyamaha.co.uk/useddetail.php?id=20632&make=KAWASAKI&model=GTR1400%20ABS
Is there an issue with insurance companies charging extra premium for imports? They always ask if vehicle is imported.
Are the French GTRs limited to 100 bhp? Just in case find out if its from across the channel.
Yes the French market is restricted to 100bhp, i believe the aussie ones are restricted on bhp too. Ask for the chassis number and call MR k and they should be able to tell you where it originated from.
I have just bought my 4th GTR from Chorley Yamaha, did you deal with Duncan ??. i remember that GTR in the shop when i picked mine up very clean and tidy. I did the deal over the phone very professional service, the bike was exactly as he described it with some very nice extras he did not tell me about. They are a premier dealer so i would have no worries. I also think they own a couple of other dealerships under a different name.
Hi I live in France and I know all the bikes(NEW) that are in the showrooms all are listed with a 106 bhp limit.. there are not many bikes over here that have not been modifyed to the correct bhp....In referance to the head light all 1400GTR have a flat beam so they have a universal headlight,i know this as i was concerned when i imported my bike to France... I think you need to find out which country the bike was 1st registered...
Hi and welcome to the forum!
I was just going to mention the French spec issue. Am I the only one on here with 106bhp?? At least I thought I was....

Only 106bhp, how do you manage, do you have to push it to get it going? :mfr_lol:
Yeah... Actually it may only have 106BHP but it seems that it is not done using the normal strangulation methods... Power delivery is nice and smooth and it appears to have kept most of it's torque. I have never ridden a 'proper' one, but I will one day release the rest of it's horses now that I live in a country that allows such things. However, until then, it's still absolutely blistering and blows most other stuff off the lights. I've calmed down a lot over the last few years too, so I'm not in any major hurry to spend the 1000EUR required to change the air intakes and the cpu (centraline - can't remember the English word...)
The only thing I would say is that sometimes, it could use abit more OOOMPH when we're two up and a load of luggage.
Cheers

Hi all and thanks for the advice. I have just found out hat the bike originated in the USA, so are there any issues with these imports?
Cheers
Anthony
Might be worth asking Kawasaki that one Ant ....... different emission laws etc.
If I were you I'd be asking the insurance companies if there were any difference in cost of insurance. Some companies get a bit twitchy when it comes to imports, and this might also help if you want to try and get the price of the bike down.
ant there are plenty of gtr's for sale out there ,i am sure you could find a better one with lower miles, plenty for sale on aututrader and e bay, there is also a chance someone on the forum will be selling a gtr ,then you would have a good history.
Well I have taken the plunge and bought a 2008 model with 10k miles from Wigan Yamaha, expecting delivery in the next 10 days.
Thanks to everyone for all the advice, and look forward to joining in on some more forums.
Ant
That's good news Ant ... well done and hope you enjoy !
