Title: 2012 model
Post by: Kwikasfuki on March 21, 2011, 02:43:06 PM
A bit early, but I'm thinking of upgrading my bike next year to the 2012 model. I'm hoping the colour will be Burgundy but that's not enough to make me want to change. As the GTR seems to go through a few revisions every couple of years, anyone want to guess what they will be?

I'd like:

1. Option for after market exhaust as standard
2. Stronger windshield mechanism (the way this has been designed has peeved me of for the past few weeks). And break up the parts microfiche  so no one has to fork out ridiculous amounts for small component that can't be purchased independently
3. Twin exhausts
4. Centrally locked panniers with additional power feed
5. Automatic suspension
6. Integrated satnav + media player with bluetooth
7. No additional kerb weight

Yes, most of those can be added after market. But it would be nice to specify out-of-the-box stuff.

+1

Think it will be my next machine - would have been the 1300GT, but that's now discontinued - give it a couple of years to sort the problems it will have!

Norm- try the 1300GT EE!!

The GTR is the first 'proper' faired tourer I have ever owned, and I have to admit it impresses me. I've no doubt that the newer GTR's 2010 & 11 models have a few more toys on them as standard, i.e. heated grips, traction control etc, and these are worthwhile improvements.
Yes I agree it would be 'nice' if the GTR had a built in sat nav, but at the end of the day, how difficult is it to bolt a bracket on the bars and attach a sat nav. Its even easier to just put one in a tank bag.
The BMW is an impressive piece of technology, but where do you draw the line. I'm not impressed with what I have previously heard about BMW service costs and I havent been impressed with the attitude of sales staff at our local BMW dealership towards me just because I dont own a BMW. I thought it was about a mutual attraction to two wheels, irrespective of what name it had on the bodywork.

I would definately be in the market for a newer GTR when the time is right. It would be nice if by then perhaps the service intervals could be expanded to 6000 miles instead of 4000 miles.

A single exhaust as there currently is, but perhaps one slightly less daunting than currently is standard. Got to admit I do like the exhaust which Metalic Mud was selling, thats definately in keeping with the lines of the GTR.

Other than that, I cant really think of anything else. Its a great bike, why change it too much?

My 2010 GTR replaced a 2007 Triumph Sprint ST 1050, i really miss the triple and dare I say it if Triumph were to bring out as is rumoured a 1200ish shaft driven triple I could be swayed back to the British Marque. Saying that i think the GTR is streets ahead of the Sprint, far more comfortable, better weather protection and as big a lump of bike as it is is a pleasure to ride. Not really a lot i'd change on the current GTR, though I have made a few changes, zumo 550 wired in myself, oem screen replaced with a cee baileys ultra tour, remus hexacone to replace the oem missile launcher and a corbin seat to keep the missus happy when sat behind me  ;D

Remember... the best traction control is located in your "right hand" - not in any electronic
box located under your ass!   :-)

And what goes for any build-in SatNav... hmm.... are searching for a replacement
in Goldwing-style?   :-)

well in cork last saturday they unveiled the k1600 gt and gtl ,must admit not overly impressed a stero with speakers on a bike is about as useful as a ashtray, also considering the price atleast overhere for the extra money you could buy a gtr and with the 5 to 8 thousand left imagine what you could do with a gtr with 3 grand even. There is also the case with the gtr people will still salute you and running costs would be cheaper servicing and that.

I think this summer I may get a second bike which will be a ZZR or buy a new 2012 1400 GTR model next year. The missus will flip if I did both  ;D

Just to get over the boredom factor I may get my black GTR resprayed. I was thinking burgundy or some funky yellow.

I'll pop down to the local BMW dealer this weekend so I can see all the obnoxious owners which will be enough to convince me not to get one. I may also look at the FJR and Pan European just to satisfy myself that the GTR is one.

Wish List?

1-ZZR1400 motor. Don't need VVT, do need 190Bhp!  ;D

2-Better screen mechanism that can do from stock screen all the way down, to CalSci +7.5" all the way up.

3-Make the handlebars adjustable for angle.
I am sick of bike designers assuming that everyone has a shoulderwidth of 12".
The bars are angled in way too much on the 1400GTR.
Usual riding position for person of "normal" size \_/.
My riding position as I have broad shoulders |_|
The result is that I have to twist my wrists and can't grip the bars properly.

4-Better tail-light. Could build it in to the tail between the indicators.

5-Make the brake and clutch levers adjustable for tilt.
That way those of us whose back is more than 18" long can use the brakes without having to be double jointed.

I don't want much do I?  :D
1 is already possible.
3 & 5 just require a bit of intelligent engineering.
4 is probably because of some stupid regulation somewhere.
2 is the only one that is probably pie-in-the-sky.

Otherwise I'll settle for a ZZR1400 and a 1400GTR.
Now all I need is the money and permission from 'er indoors. :(

OI! (yells a BMW owner).

We have an FJR and I don't think it's a patch on the GTR - doesn't handle as well (much better now we've fitted an Ohlins), doesn't go as well, isn't as comfortable and is very dated. Having said all that we still like riding it, it's just not as good as the GTR.

I had a Pan as a hire bike after I dumped the GTR in 2009. I absolutely loathed it. Winston will probably comment in a minute and tell you he thinks they're OK but I thought it was awful. The handling was so bad I stopped and got off once to check the tyres as I was convinced it had a flat (it hadn't). I was very grateful when it went back.

I am an X Fjr owner, had two of them. The Gtr is coming out better at moment. The Fjr is a very reliable bit of kit, bullet proof. It does come into it's own , when loaded with luggage & a  Pillion on. You could still sling it into Alpine corners & was like you had no extra weight at all on board. It pulls better from lower Gears too. Short shifts much better that the Gtr.

Not loaded the Gtr down for big Tour yet. So cant say.

With a standard shock? You must be the only person in the world who thinks that! Even most of the died-in-the-wool aficionados on the FJOC forum will concede that the standard shock leaves a lot to be desired and they're not wrong.

Don't think that's the case at all. Not sure where your getting all your info from. I've had plenty of Bikes in my 33 years of Riding, so I know difference between good & bad. I had standard shock too.
Think that's one reasons some Police forces use them as they behave so well when loaded. I never had problem & still scraped the foot Pegs a time or two when on tour. It pulls better at low revs than what the GTr does , that's for sure. But like I said , the Gtr does handle better for sure. But the Fjr is in no way a poor Bike. It's price tag put me off 3rd time  , that & fancied some thing different. I cant comment on it's abilities when loaded or with Pillion as yet.
Look at the Slagging the Gtr has had from some...so it's often a personal thing.

My personal experience, talking to other owners, reading the experiences of other owners in places like the FJOC, FJForum, talking to suspension experts like MCT. Have you considered that you were scraping the ground because there's inadequate pre-load adjustment?

I'm not sure why you think this is a GTR vs. FJR thing because it really isn't. As I said, we have both - we're on our second FJR and second GTR - and I really like both bikes but I don't like the standard FJR suspension at all. You obviously do but, like you said, we're all different.

I think a 2012 model is on the cards, and if they don't do one in a colour I like, then it'll be a used 2011 model. One that's been lovingly looked after by someone

I see the BMW 1600 GTL E is on for sale at ~£17.5k
That's a shit load of money for a bike, considering the RRP for the 1400 GTR is ~£13.5k

I spoke to a Kawasaki dealer who imitated that the GTR wasn't selling. Not because of the competition, but that Kawasaki had started to market themselves out of the market. Considering the earlier revision RRP was £11.5k, the additional 2k is probably making an impact

Having recently bought a 2011 after looking at all the competition I thought 13.5K was very competitive in comparision to what other bikes are costing nowadays. Most if not all flagship bike's are well in excess of 10K

Bikes have gone up a lot in price recently and may be making people think twice about buying any bike not just the GTR in today's economic climate especially as most bikes are bought as toys

Honda Pan European £13825
Yamaha FJR 1300 £15499

GTR is good value when you compare it in this company, particularly when it isn't a 12 year old design!!

Mr Wolf ... come on now ... if your bike is out of warranty, and I know yours is , there is no harm in taking your bike for service every 6000 miles instead of the " must be 3750 " miles in the book. I have said this before that over a period of time you will spend £100ds of extra pounds on those services. We are dealing with state of the art computer made machinery here and a few weeks or months or miles wont make ANY difference, except to your pocket.
That's what I did with my other bikes and I shall do it with the GTR ... come on ... you know it makes sense  ;D

I know when I last serviced the GTR I did it myself, it just made sense. Its the best way I know to get to learn how your bike functions. Yes it can be frustrating, but I find it satisfying to know that its been done right and done thoroughly with a bit of TLC ;D

I've decided. Baring the purchase of something major (i.e. new house), the GTR will be my next big buy. Ideally a 2012 model in burgundy, or a 2011 in green.

Problem with buying new it that I'll have to give the bike TLC. Second hand and I abuse it from the word go  ;D

Never had a B M W myself, but I know lots of people that have and without exception they have had problems some of which were major jobs ie complete new wiring harness, and a complete new diff, (both on a 1100s), and the new 800 twins are not without major troubles either, lots of rear axle woes, paint falling off engines, and lots of other stuff. I just dont see the build quality and reliability of any other manufacturer matching that  of the japanese. I have had 8 Kawasakis and have yet to have any issues whatsoever.(yes I am clinging on to the sideboard). I buy japanese because I think they give better value for money than anything else whilst doing everything I ask of them, and doing it very well.

We did 12000 miles on a 1200GS in just over a year and sold it last week. The only problem we had was a knackered battery which was almost certainly due to it being standing for a while
before we bought it. The only reason we sold it is I couldn't live with the range and I see a GSA in our future unless the new Honda is comparable.

My bike will be coming out of extended warranty in March 2012. It's now done 40k miles and by March I hope to be hitting 50k. The dealer gave me the guide price based on 40k miles and it was a depressing 4 - 4.5k. Obviously that's trade, private may get me more. I dread to think of the value at 50k miles.

Which leaves me with two options. Either part-ex for a new one, or carry on riding this bike.

Had 2 GTRs first one for 18 month did 22k, second now had 2 years and 27k i too would like to change next year but after looking at the new ones i am loathed to change unless something really groundbraking comes up. I have a bike that does everything i want it too, don't want un-necessary gadgets. Had no problems yet although the exhaust paint is beginning to blister around the end cap. Just been quoted £350 for a major service ( includes re-grease headstock, s/arm and shaft )

The only colour is black !!!

FJR --   Massey ferguson
PAN --  John deere

No bike with 50K on the clock is going to be worth much even a GTR - how may people will want to buy it when you can get something with lower mileage for not much more money.

Why trade in a bike for the same model albeit with a couple of extra toys anyway.

If the bike is running well then keep it until its not or there's something better on the market to justify changing like a 1600GTR

In my eyes that looks butt-ugly. But I guess you can still get it in black.

Looks very good indeed. I see there is a sign in the background on one of the photos, Rest Rooms, so thats the US colour scheme, is it coming to us shortly?

I have to agree that is very nice. Any news on price increases, if any?

Hope the price stays the same.

What's weird is that the image on the main page has black wheels, but when you click on the colours, that picture has silver wheels.

"Grand Tourer" edition appears to have top box, pannier bags, protective film, GPS bracket and tank pad set. No price info, but I don't think that set of options included would tempt me at all.

That burgundy colour is lovely, but as we all know how crippling the first two year's depreciation is, it is a lot of money to upgrade for merely a colour.

Martin.

Tastes differ.
I like the midnight blue better.
Not as nice as the 2011 green, though. ;D ;D

Ugh! Couldn't stand the green from this year. Glad I picked up a magnesium from last year! :)

How soon before we see the 2012 model enter the second hand market?

I'm thinking do I buy new, or wait a few months and let someone else take the hit on the depreciation?

Then again, I'm looking to buy with a view to keeping the bike for at least 5 years (that's when the extended warranty runs out!)

The depreciation doesn't come into it for me as I tend to keep my bikes 5/6 years and get my monies worth .... And that will certainly be the case with the Gtr ... I have not owned a better bike than this  ;D

Depreciation is not kind to our beloved GTRs, so you have the potential to save a lot of money by going for a used one. I have lost at least £4,000 in the first year and 17k miles on mine, a substantial sum of course, but that was expected (if not liked  ;) )

The trouble is going to be finding someone selling a 2012 after a few months.

If I was doing it all again now, with the benefit of hindsight, I think I'd be trying to find a new 2010/2011 model that the dealer has sat and paid for in the showroom for quite a while. I would be haggling *very* hard.

Martin.

I've never owned a new car or bike in my life. Can't see the point in losing all that hard earned cash in one swift swoop. Perhaps next year I will change mine but if/when I do, it will be for a lowish mileage 2010+ model. For less than 10k you'll get something really decent and by the time any part x value is taken into considertaion the whole deal will cost you about 3.5k.
That seems reasonable to me. I'm happy to do that every couple of years.

I bought a brand new 2010, but didn't haggle very hard! Got some pennies off, which is nice, but I think I get on with my dealer too well to try and drive a hard bargain.

So next year's model doesn't get any changes, besides colour. Will the year after get a bit of a make over? New engine derived from the new ZZR engine perhaps?
