Title: Revs pulsing on idle
Post by: KeVstrom on April 15, 2013, 08:59:15 PM
Notice this today, even when the bike was warm, just at idle, i noticed the bike hunting a bit, the rev count sat at a steady 1100 rpm or so, not moving, but the engine noise was pulsing.

Any suggestiong on what to check? The bike was serviced (oil change) when i got it a couple of hundred miles ago. Also i dont know if its just me, but i find the bike jerky coming on & off part throttle. Could it be related to my V&H Exhaust?

- there's a fast idle function (check for the hightened idle and then the "drop off" as the engine warms up).

- then there's the idle speed adjustment thingy (basically an air-bleed device near the front of your gear lever). You could have a play with that too.

good luck

.

Hi

I have noticed the is a marked difference in the idle when cold if you switch to ECO mode.

"then there's the idle speed adjustment thingy (basically an air-bleed device near the front of your gear lever) - This is a small chrome headed thing, looks a bit like small bolt stuck in the end of a rubber pipe, having investigated and pulled the covers off it is adjusting the throttle stop.

KevStrom, mine does it too, but only when cold. Less than 5 minutes on the road & it evens out. What does it do when you hold throttle back hard idle?.

Im gonna have to check it out in a day or twos time and get back yous all. Not sure if it was a one off thing. Im on night shifts at the mo so havent had to to get the bike out.

Mine's been doing this too - If I throttle back hard it kills the engine, maybe the idle speed is not quite adjusted properly. But when warmed up - it's not a problem. In for a service tomorrow so will check.

What do you mean "kills the engine"

Im guessing stalls. Im gonna leave mine for now. Gonnna remove the secondaries to see id my part throttle improves.

If you mean the secondary flies be aware that this will incapacitate the traction control.

How so?

The secondary butterfly valves are controlled by the ECU and part of their use is to control the engine if the rear wheel loses traction. In this case the ingintion is also retarded, so while removing the butterflies won't disable the traction control, using just ingition retarding to accomplish the same thing does compromise its effectiveness.

What many C14 owners in the states have done is have the ECU reflashed. Essentially reprogramme the engine controls. This makes the butterflies open earlier so that you have more power lower down, but because they are still in place the traction control works as designed.

Its done by Guhl Motors. You can just ship your ECU to them to have this done.

Interesting. wonder if hilltop motorcycles can map the butterflies to open early? Will have to ask.

Removing the 2ndaries does not disable the Traction Control.
Traction control is handled by spark timing and fuel injection.
The movement of a butterfly valve by a servo is too slow to be effective.

Aye that makes sense aswell! Spark n fueling would have been my thought like as its more direct. Lets hope so anyways cos mine are out. Straightaway theres an improvement on and off the throttle at low speed, which is what i needed. Did notice some popping from the exhaust coming off throttle.
