Title: Loose exhaust header bolts
Post by: viper on April 10, 2013, 10:45:49 PM
A topic thats been covered several times on here, possibly a contribution to the handlebar buzz. Well I always intended to check mine at the next time I had any plastic off, forgot tho. today i was putting my front wheel back on, cleaning up the pads and calipers and then remembered about them. The first  exhaust nut  you can actually get a spanner on through the fairing grills, yup it was loose, not falling off but defo not tight enough. after starring at the exhaust headers through the fairing side and contemplating  taking off the radiator ect , I just got my hand in there with a 12mm ratchet ring spanner and was actually able to tighten them ALL up, 4 on one side and the other 4 on the other side. result, 10 min fidly job

anyway, check your nuts guys , and debs as well

Its bound to happen and really ought to be highlighted in the service schedule rather than just a general "make sure all nuts etc are tight"

The gaskets in the exhaust ports are hollow copper rings, designed to crush and make a gas tight seal.  Seems that general vibration squashes then a bit further and the headers then become a bit looser in the ports.  I've found that once nipped up they don't loosen again.

Good to highlight this, again, Viper

ive had several bikes from new over the years and have never known header bolts to loosen, this seems to be a common problem on the gtr and possibly linked to the viabration that so many talk of

:agree:  :goodpost: Viper, I visually checked my nuts this morning  :mfr_lol:...and the studs did look a bit rusty  :mfr_lol:

Seriously, I have looked at them and I will check their tightness although I really don't know how I'm going to get my fat mit in there, I could be stuck there for some time

I was thinking that - might have to convince the eldest sibling to have a go under supervision :-)

- tightened up the manifold's bolts too today. They were mostly loose.

- can be done through the fairing's slats and with a long u-jointed extension, from the bottom
