Thinking of fitting a monokey.. But it would be nice to see what you've fitted and how it looks before I take the plunge...
Thinking I can use the top box for commuting etc. while the panniers stay in the garage..On trips the panniers can act as hand luggage when we get there, and remain in our luxury accommodation while we sight see....
Not a fan of top boxes, am a fan of Ventura which I've used for commuting - I have posted photos before, I'll try to dig out, hardly David Bailey, but the 10 second on and off with little impact to the lines is a big plus in my world!
Always good to see what we all prefer :punk:
I had Ventura on my ZX9-R which was excellent kit, however i prefer the top box, which I think looks much better on the GTR with the panniers.
I commute in London regularly, so use the top box, and leave the panniers in the garage, only use them on trips away.
I know someone one here(sorry I forget who) is offended by not having the panniers on, for which i humbly apologise, they are a pain in London traffic though, and far to nice and shiny to risk against black cabs, cyclists and the like.

Kind of sums up my reason to get a top box
kawasaki use the givi monolock box ( e470 ) for the gtr , which is what ive got, its wobbly flimsy and has a crap lock, i did upgrade the plate to a home fabbed aluminium one, which is sturdier but still a disapointing box, the box is colour coded so looks better.
if i had my time again id get the givi monokey equlvelent, so much better and in fact i ran this box for several years on my zzr12oo and was always happy.
the lock on my kawasaki monolock is crap and continually sticks and fails to open

Got to be Monokey... The vid explains it well
Silverback, guilty as charged, tis me who insists that panniers should be carried at all times. :whistling:
Here's my old battered top box. A givi E52 Monokey that I bought second hand when I had my CBF1000.
As you can see in the photo the standard gtr rack has been replaced by a custom made ali plate (bought on here) onto which bolts the monokey base. Its well made and solid as a rock. (dont ask about the lights!!)

I do tend to leave panniers on, and last year when i had my accident the pannier took a lot of the impact and saved the bike and me from more damage.

Here's mine a Givi Maxia,
I like a top box and use it all the time, so it stays on the bike permanently, and is fitted with the Givi fitting kit, which although a bit of a pain to fit, is very solid.

I'm hoping to utilise the Phils Farkels rack and avoid the Givi fitting kit... but I must say that looks pretty secure
I was turning left into a side road and didn't see the gravel . Bike slid out and went down on near side. Nothing broken on me but as you cna see in the photo the leading bottom edge of the box was well ground away!

Can I ask about your tank bag.. It looks set well back and not get caught by the bars. What make etc is it?
P
It's a bags Connection Engage XL, which does the job nicely, it secures to a 'horseshoe' style ring which attaches to the Fuel filler neck. Some concern has been expressed in the past about the suitability of this method of attachment, but its always been fine with me and its flexibility allows for a smaller day bag from the range, to be used when not on tour, I don't overload the tank bag anyway. Its also dead easy to move when filling up with fuel.
Here's the link, I've used Chainspeed for a number of accessory purchases as they are very helpful.

The Givi Top Box fitment kit is VERY solid but as stated a right pain to fit unless you can stand on your head, read Italian, and fit it at the same time that is :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:

Unlucky
Just had a root around in the garage , and after about 20 minutes found what I was looking for... a monokey plate... This has bolted straight onto the Phils Farkels rack replacement using M8 bolts... and is nice and solid... plenty of adjustment with it as well... I reckon about 2 " forwards or backwards ...

Thats about £90 saved to start with
What does the collective think on the grey one here , on a silver 09 GTR?

Looks like a nice box. I was gonna order a few things from here once. They have some good prices compared to the UK. http://www.ojmoto.it/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=v47n

Got to agree those prices are good.. The one I highlighted was offering a free back rest as well, which makes it a pretty good deal even compared to the Italian supplier
I think the Grey would look good on your Silver bike

Lonewolf,
How about, I leave them off while riding in London, and promise to put them on at all other times, is this acceptable? :-)
I don't like going out half dressed, but needs must at times
SB
Clive .. I do the same as you and Steve does NOT approve .... It's clearly a "Met" thing that he wouldn't understand .. any more than a few cars on the road and he wouldn't bother going out ...."Too busy" and all that ......

That's a nice piece of ally.
Lonewolf,
What's all that green stuff in the picture, its scary, no tarmac? no bricks? no concrete?
BTW is the GTR any good off road then? Not tried that myself...
SB
SB, in and amongst that green stuff there are definitely various sections of tarmac and its a pleasure to ride on.
:biker3:
LW,
I'll definitely have to get up and give that a go then, i've read about places like this, and even seen pictures in books, it looks very nice.
When was the photo taken, can't remember seeing blue in the sky for such a long time now.
SB
The blue sky makes a pleasant change from the previous industrial smog :mfr_lol:
Cant recall exactly when it was taken probably middle of last year.
