Title: Right angled tire valve fittings - Do they work on the GTR with TPS?
Post by: hurricane on March 15, 2013, 10:57:25 AM
Hi all, it's newbie here again. I know this topic has been covered before at earlier years, but....  On my other bike (FJR) I had right-angled valve stems fitted to my rims, and they are just fantastic! But with the GTR, can they be fitted or will it not be possible with the TPS's in place?. The current setup is just too :shit: to be possible on a top-line bike. BMW have the right idea with the way theirs are set into the wheel design. Thoughts please....  A lot of the angled adaptors are a pain to use at the Servo and they leak and release air when you're trying to pump them up.

Well, in France they obviously use a different system at gas stations and so far I never had a problem attaching the air hose to the valve.
They use the same setup as my foot pump, which is by the way also French (Michelin).
And the air is still free as well.
So I think the problem is more the gas stations in the UK that are only interested in selling air to car drivers and ignore the needs of motorbikes.

I bought a right angle adaptor for emergencies that screws on to the valve but I hate it because by the time you unscrew it again half of the air you just put in escapes. I don't want to leave it on permanently because it will most likely unbalance the wheel and even worse if it should come loose during the ride I would loose air quite rapidly before it finally flies off (and who knows what it will hit?).

The trick it to put in a couple of psi more than required.

- yeah , used to drive me crazy. Now I use a proper gauge to get the correct pressure.

- and you should not leave that fitting there. dangerous.

Hi, firstly, it is unlikely that you will fit a right angled valve to the TPS - I think the valve and the TPS is a factory integrated unit.

another solution would be, when you next replace the tyre, have it balanced with the 90 degree valve adapter in place, but also loctiite the adapter on.

I have to admit, its not something I would do....  I always do typre pressures at home by foot pump, but also carry an emergancy 90 degree valve adapter.

Thanks dokterdave, I'll check it out. Mecki, I didnt know people have to pay for air , In Australia we don't need to, we have all the air we need (even at gas stations! ).

+1. Use a twin cylinder foot pump which requires very little effort. This alows me to adjust pressure when tyres are completely cold, thus able to be very accurate. Again also carry an adapter for emergencies.

Thanks guys. Never thought about getting a foot pump for home  :embarrassed: That would ensure that I am right before every ride, yes?. As to being on the road, the link provided by DD from murphskits (http://www.murphskits.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=494) looks like it will do the business. Had a bunch of other stuff to buy so it's on the way. I'll advise how it works after a couple of weeks on the bike.

This is the type of pump I use at home. I would think you can get something similar from a local supplier.

I use one of these at home with a 12v pump but keep it in the top box in case i need to use a forecourt airline

I scrounged mine from the tyre fitter that looks after my fleet tyres at work.

And at the weekend I bought a 240 compressor from Aldi, as the 12 volt one takes ages to get the last couple of psi in!

I saw those and the related accessories that are for sale with the compressor, it looked to be a pretty good piece of equipment, and good value too

I'm happy with the compressor, so as well as the bike and 3 sets of car tyres I can also spray paint the fences!!

I have the same one - the black ring turns to set the pressure - ignore it - its pants.... turn it to 80 psi and leave it, then use a separate gauge, to set the correct pressure.

Having talked about my flexi extender on here a seal in it has failed so i've had to buy a 90 degree one. It works well too though.

G'day all. Back to my original question on this thread (but I do like the idea of having these bendy things in my glove compartment! - I have finally sourced a place here in Australia that has them - brettstruck.com.au). Online from http://www.myshopping.com.au/ZM--1213491117_VEF500_5_127mm_FLEXI_TYRE_VALVE_EXTENSION

I had the right-angled adaptors fitted to the rim that I sourced from Murphs Kits (MU-191) - It is suitable to fit with the TPS, and at TPS changeout time you can change over the fitting to the new TPS (may just need a new O-ring fitted). No leakage, no impact on the TPS reading at all. No adaptor to muck with when your at the pump. Just a thought.

Hurricane, If they are a permanent fixture, what if any effect do they have on wheel balance  ?

Murphs does 2 different right-angle valves for the 1400

As for the wheel balance, you balance the wheel with the valves fitted and the tyre inflated to 42psi.
Then you fit the wheel to your bike.
Or are you asking about the wheel balance with the flexy fitted?  :mfr_lol:

OC, no effect on balance at all. While I note the unintended humour in Boomers reply, that does address the potential issues.
