Title: Belgium trip
Post by: 911dude on March 06, 2013, 07:32:56 PM
The good wife and myself are off to Belgium on the GTR in April.
We will be staying in Ypres for 3 nights.
Has anybody got any ideas for some decent rides and routes based around Ypres as a starting and finishing point? :biker3:

lucky you dude ...  Ypres is only 20 miles from my hometown & know it very well ;-)

if you want the nicest roads you can bike between Ypres & the French border (region : Heuvelland  ...  Heuvel  means hill)  and/or pass the French border ; that is my favorite bikingplace ;
do not try the region the opposite side between Ypres-> Gent (ugly...)

between Ypres & the canal it can be very nice biking ; i have done this route & it is the nicest one in years in the 150 miles around Ypres
it starts and ends in Houthulst, a 15 miles above Ypres & passes most off the time the french border looking for the nicest & most pittoresk places of this region ; it is in total ca 300 kms/200 miles  but I can really recommend this !

welcome in the region

Good luck with your trip 911, Belgium is a lovely country with friendly people, we were there for a couple of days in early December last year, however we were on four wheels not two

We stayed here

If you fancy a longer ride for a whole day out then aim for the Ardennes.
Head for Dinant, follow the Meuse river south to Revin & Bogny, then follow the Semois river to Bouillon and Herbeumont.
About 220Km (2 hrs) on the Motorways from Ypres to Dinant, 150Km (4 hrs plus any breaks) of riverside roads to Herbeumont, then 285Km (3hrs) of Motorways back.
If you don't have a Satnav, make sure that you have good maps as the section from Revin to Herbeumont is deepest darkest middle of nowhere.
Unlike most of the rest of Belgium and northwest France this area is heavily forested.

at last.. I found a link (couldn't attach the file here) :

http://www.mtcvrijbos.be/gps-bestanden.html

and look for Megatour de France (starts & ends in Houthulst Belgium)
and download the file megarit_2012

so long ;-)

ps the megarit_2010 was also very good (but 2012 the best ;-))
