And watch British detective shows. I'm subscribed to both Netflix and Amazon Prime. Many of the British Detective shows can be found there. We've become addicted to Inspector Lewis, Zed, Wallander, and now Foyle's War. I'm keen on Inspector Lewis as he occasionally visits RAF Upper Heyford (an old haunt).
However, we've just started watching Foyle's War. The last show of the first season brought tears to my eyes as the Battle of Britain was just beginning. We watched the third show a few days ago. It was about a child that was sent to the country to be protected from the German bombing. That reminded me of my Mum who died about a year ago. She was one of those children and was horribly scarred by it, unfortunately. It was not a pleasant experience and she was staying with family so they weren't unknown to her. Yet.... Enough so that we were never told about our side of the family in England (Ipswich).
Now back to the fourth show. I got to see a British Spitfire. What a marvelous aircraft and all I could think about was that England was alone in fighting off the Germans, yet they did it. (tearing up a bit now actually) . The bombing has just started and there was a close up of house that had been hit. That brought back memories of me with my father going to some large city (London I think) back in the early 60s to pick up a car. I remember still seeing bombed out buildings at the time. I also saw some graffiti of Yankee Go Home on a brick wall..
So many memories flooding back based on this show. You should all be proud of your heritages on that little island that you live on. I know that I am...
Nice one Jim, and we are a proud nation, and rightly so, having said that we didn't win the war all on our own ya know ~ we had some help along the way
Yes, you did. But winning the air war over your skies was essentially your effort. I was thinking some about this a couple of nights ago. If Hitler hadn't attacked the Russians like he did, it may have indeed been a different outcome for all of us...
My Mum never was particularly fond of Germans after the war and when I showed up on her doorstep with one (riding buddy) it was all she could do to contain herself.... Ah, but Mum was Mum on the subject afterwards.
Good to see that you are enjoying some 'British' T.V Jim and that you have seen a Spitfire which is truly and iconic aircraft.
Another 'British' show that you may or may not have seen is Top Gear, presented by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, the latter holds his own PPL. They usually test supercars and get involved in crazy stunts, but on a few occasions they are involved with and present some brilliant stuff
Here they are with the ubiquitous Spitfire ....enjoy

We must remember that not all the pilots were british...
A good point, well made debs :agree:

Well, I don't care much for Jeremy Clarkson so I don't watch the show. I used to, but it got to the point he was ruining for me. James May has had a few offshoots that I've seen over here and enjoyed them as has Richard Hammond. I just can't get by Jeremy, though.

Its for people like these that the much over used term 'hero' should be reserved, not sports stars and the like...
So, you were watching 5USA last night as well. LOve that film and nearly word perfect!!. My dear old Dad was in The "real" Battle of Britain and reckoned that the film was very true to life (and death :undecided:)
