Title: Crash (drop) protection
Post by: kwarrgtr on February 15, 2013, 11:43:22 AM
I guess its been covered many time before, but I'd like some protection.
I hope I never have to pick the bugger up again... but if I do... hopefully a lot less damage and ergo cost than last year!!

The RG ones look good - maybe a bit 'obvious' against the sleek lines on the GTR? The Kwaka ones are fave at the moment - cost not withstanding!!! But.... are they any good? So:
Easy to fit?
Offer good protection?
Protrude far enough to protect pannier lids if worse happens?

Anyone got them and post some pics would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers all, keith

I dont think crash posts will protect your panniers unless you get the scaffolding that Debs has on her bike

The photo's of the top block kit seem to show a degree of protection ....

Fred Harmon over on the US GTR forum has kindly posted quite a few pictures... I think these are the ones I'll be saving up for

These are a good alternative and when combined with these:

You can protect the entire bike.

I have the R&G Adventure Bars fitted and they are pretty good - not that I have, fingers crossed, put them to the test but they do come in handy for fitting accessories to like video camera mount and a Costa Coffee cup holder

:agree: and unlike the much more expensive US bars we see advertised earlier in this thread they are not 'obvious' at all.
To the contrary they follow the 'sleek lines' of the GTR so you hardly notice them.  :2guns:
And best of all you don't have to ruin your fairing (drill holes into it) to mount them.
As far as the panniers go, they are cheap compared to replacing the fairing so why ruin the looks of a beautiful bike and pay nearly as much as a new pannier would cost to protect them?

thanks guys (and gal) for the posts. yes, have to admit I am a bit reluctant to pay that much for the us ones. And a bit more reluctant to start drilling the fairing.

So...I think the R& G bars have just gone to the top of the list. And as a previous poster says - I then have the option of adding some additional accesories - lights specifically - even tho' I do know of course it wont make any difference in terms of being seen.

Seems most protectors don't fit the earlier model.

Can't see the R&G aero bungs saving the panniers in a fall over type mishap.  Can't find an answer about top block's for a 2009, and the genuine Kawasaki ones are £375

I've found a place in the US that sells the French TopBlock product for US $550. I'm still a bit dubious about drilling holes in the plastic, but this price is better than Europe and it is the best looking product out there I think!.

Hi I have the gen Kawasaki crash protectors fitted to my GTR, they were fitted by the dealer when I purchased the bike, it took them all morning so they sound a bitch to fit,but they do look a lot better then some after market ones. Luckly the bike has not fallen over yet so I dont know how effective they are..
