Title: LED Driving Lights - fitted
Post by: PCPeteUK on February 04, 2013, 02:55:09 PM
I know others on here have done it - and made it look easy - so I thought I would have a go while pottering in my man cave yesterday.

I had a pair left over from my Goldwing days so decided I would fit them with the waterproof connectors...
...so that I can remove them easily for any servicing work and they are fused via a spur from the accessories feed. I have purchased a water resistant on/off illuminated switch...
...that I intend to fit into the blanking plug on the LHS - so I can turn them off if they blind on coming traffic at night. I ran out of time to fit that yesterday so that is on the 'to do' list

Apologies for the size of the pictures but I couldn't work out how to post smaller versions....

I can't blame anybody for wanting to make themselves more visible for other vehicles or for riding in poorly lit areas  but I found the standard gtr lights to be fine  if some dozy sod can't see the standard lights on the gtr1400 there not going to see any lights, no matter what lights you have fitted. same with the zzr1400, I think the lights are more than adequate for the job  also noticed you use a camera which is positioned on your front nose fairing  I know lots of riders use cameras  but the problem I have with camaras on bikes is, unless your one of thoses riders who don't tend to try that bit harder to look better on the bends e.t.c or taking film of their mates who also tend to try that bit harder! then cameras tend to bring the devil out in you which usually ends in tears  also if you are unfortunate to have a accident then the  :police: have all the evidence they need to crucify you  that's if your lucky enough to walk away  either way, if your breaking the law your "fooked" don't mean to be a killjoy  just adding my 2 penneth worth  take care

Yes they are bright - but I prefer them that way. Too many near misses with car drivers that tell me they didn't see me - actually had 6 headlights on my goldwing (they are good for that) and a Renualt Megane still came onto my side of the road when trying to get ahead of traffic to a road junction and took me out. Then said he didn't see me.

It's for my peace of mind not theirs. And yes the GTR lights are brilliant as they are. Once the canyon bars are fitted there will be another set of lights on that too  just need to save the pennies to purchase the bars....

Regarding the camera on the front - I do a lot of touring and like to have the reminders of the great roads abroad. I don't need any excuse to be an idiot on the bike. I have managed to survive 36 years with the only accidents being car drivers without a thought. BTW I drive too and understand it can be difficult at times to see these bikes as they are soooo quick at times. I have had near misses too but the camera doesn't influence the way I ride.

Sadly, if you wafted a kipper under some peoples nose they still wouldn't smell it

Whilst driving a wagon I was once hit by this dozey bugger of a woman who said she didn't see the wagon because it had its LED warning lights and rotating beacons flashing .......WTF

I like the idea of cameras on bikes, if you aren't being an arse and God forbid you come a cropper and get knocked off by some clutz I would suggest they would be worth their weight in gold in establishing blameand supporting your account. The GTR is the largest, and most well equipped bike I have ever owned for having numerous effective headlights. I always wear my hi viz so I would like to believe that I should be able to be seen, but obviously that doesnt mean I will be seen and I never take anything or granted. But where do you draw the line?

pete.. take  "bread potus" of my 2 penneth worth  I'm one of thoses riders that have also been riding bikes since 1976 and thankfully, I've managed to survive my "ride fast die young" attitdude days. I wasn't implying that you are not wise or experienced enough not to know the dangers of becoming to complacent when riding "high powerd motorcycles" on todays roads  I was just pointing out that car drivers can look straite at bikers and still not see you no matter what precautions we take. As far as cameras are concearned, if there being used by the rider that have nothing to prove, their fine  but some riders tend to grow horns and ride beyond their capabilities or film a mate who wants to look as good as possible when it's played back to friends, I just don't want to be going around a bend when one of theses idiots takes the bend to fast and runs wide, then straite into me

well have no regrets yet  I had my gt1400 for 2 years toured france, italy, cornwall, devon, cotswolds and scotland and it's defo the best full tourer on the market  even better than the "SIX" sorry Winston Smith  I've always had a middleweight supersport  but think I'm getting to old for them crotch rockets now  I had the 2008 zzr1400 before I got my gtr1400 and found it to be a excellent allrounder  I only wanted one bike, but it needed to be as good as "possible" as the gtr for touring and be able to handle the twisties as good as "possible" as the zx6r and the 2013 model zzr1441 ticks theses boxes  all I need now is some decent weather so I can start enjoying the zzr because I've not used it for 4 weeks since having it's first service done at 603 miles  roll on the better weather

Pete,

I fitted similar about 18 months ago, and thought I would share some of my experiences that may help you avoid the same hassle. I still swear by these lights, I have definately noticed less muppet behaviour since fitting them.

Anyhow, onto the challenges I faced. Firstly, the waterproof connectors turned out to be not quite waterproof. I ride in all weathers, and have also ridden through plenty of flooding each winter (maybe 4-6 inches deep). The first set of lights stayed waterproof for 6 months, then all the pins in the connectors corroded and snapped.

Bought a second set, and wrapped the whole loom - including the waterproof connectors - in electrical tape. This made the wires much less flexible, and so after another 6 months or so, the compressing/extending of the forks started to break the wires where they join the lights themselves.

Third set, less OTT on the electrical tape, and 4 months in, more wire snapping - though this time further up the loom.

Just FYI, in case it helps you avoid similar.

I am now trying to find a way to mount them somewhere that does not compress and extend all the time. Under the mirrors maybe, but I want them further from the headlights really so they are a separate source of light.

Martin.

Going to disapoint on 2 counts here -
How have you made your lights to appear blue - wear a blue T shirt when taking the photo
and have you got a link wear i can get these lamps please - sorry no, I bought them from a local auto parts retailer (small Halfords type place) I know they are made by Link if that helps...

In reply to Martin - appreciate the update and I agree - they will not be staying there permanently. Once I have bought the Canyon Bars they will move to the brackets on them for a mopre permanent, less cable flexing mounting.
