Sounds like you missed out on some of the most spectacular roads on the way.
The Rhone Alps are my regular haunt and it really pays to explore the area.
We are off to northern Italy in may, staying in Merano. Bit of a busmans holiday really we are visiting 2 suppliers on the way down there. Staying at a hotel that is owned by one of the MD's sister. Loads of places within easy reach, but the one i really want to do is the Stelvio Pass.

I hope for you that road is in a better condition than most in the Italian Alps - Potholes galore and no overtaking signs everywhere.

In June 2010 we rode from Merano over St leonards pass and Timmel Joch. The weather on the Italian side was attrocious with driving rain, thick fog (cloud??) and even a few rocks on the road to dodge.
Once back into Austria the snow banks were huge but the road condition was better. I was riding a demo BMW K1300gt loaned from the hotel and had only bought my GTR a week earlier, so I was a bit nervous on a strange bike.
We went back the next day in the car to see the views that we had missed in the fog and Pam was really pleased she'd not seen some of the drops.
I rode Stelvio in 2008 on my CBF1000. Fab views! Here's my video of Stelvio.. not my best film due to lense fogging

Montage (Audi was a 2.8 TDI Quatro demo from the hotel and on breakdown truck due to a puncture that the sealant would not seal. Hence we did not get up Stelvio in the car.)

Patrick, the Hotel in the Kaunertal valley looks like the Hotel Weisseespitze, a BMW Mottorad Hotel run by Charlie.
we stayed there in 2009, very good it was too....the Kaunretal Valley is a great ride and was under a heavy snowfall on June when we got to the top, I have lots of pictures.

Absolutely right on the hotel. I stayed there for 4 nights in 2008 and for 7 nights in 2010 when we went by car but the weather meant that we only used a BMW for 2 days.
The hotel is fantastic but I had to dig my heels in very deep to get Charlie to understand the principal of me not paying for used tread on the A5 quatro tyre that we punctured. But it was resolved amicably :-) and id reccomend that Hotel to anyone.
P
The roads and weather dont bother me that much, although obviously i would like good weather. Thanks for the heads up though.
This is the hotel we will be staying at.

:agree: its a great hotel, and biker orientated, I'd stay there again. We had 5 nights there in 2009
Looks a great hotel Zed
Yea LW they tell me its very good, also the owner is allowing us to park the bike under cover, apparently they have quite a few bikers stop there, mainly the Italians themselves coming up from the south to do the lakes and alps.
