went to my first karate lesson tonight, not sure what to think, I like the moves and the Art side of it , but not sure about all the bowing , the japanese screaming and the having to bow to a 10 yr old black belt everytime he walks past me ? whos done it and what did you think
Take a baseball bat in with you next time and see how many bow to you :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
dont know much about the karate but i did judo from being ten years old till i was around 38,fantastic sport for all round fitness and strength, iused to love it,you still have to bow before and after engaging in your practise it is just a sign of respect .why not give it a go i am sure you will enjoy it better than walking up and down the dojo sreaming eeeiish!!! good luck keith
what other martial arts are good for fitness, self defence ect but dont go in so much for all the culture respect.
I dont mind bowing before a contest ect, but in an hour lesson i had to do about 30 bows everytime a little black belt walked past ect
Depending on how intense you want to get have you considered MMA mixed martial arts?
We have two guys at work that do it, ones an Inspector and the other is a PC.
This is our guy...Saif Khan.http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4-jyfR_RC0 (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4-jyfR_RC0)
Never done it but sounds ok to me .... Stick with it and see how you get on....
Tried it, dint like it, so gave it the chop :smartass: I'll get me coat :surrender:

I did TaeKwonDo as a teenager.
Less formal than Karate but does concentrate more on the legs.
Similar to Kickboxing.
In my 20s I got into Ninjitsu.
Much broader in scope than most martial arts and much less formal.

ive been looking into Krav maga, its a mixture of martial arts but more real, the military use it and is also taught to body guards police ect, its a tracksuit based training session, no bowing no flags ,
jump in at about 8 mins , if you are interested in seeing krav maga

ermmmm, I'm too old now for all this self defense stuff :whistling:
Give me good old fashioned boxing every time
I have taken karate for many years and now tae kwon do. I prefer the latter as it focuses more on kicks and leg work than punches and throws. The bowing is a sign of respect. The lower belts bow to the higher because they have devoted themselves to learning and are willing to teach and the higher show respect to the lower for their willingness to learn. Not all schools are as formal as you describe.
