Title: Hilltop Motorcycles Dyno treatment
Post by: Bryn on January 03, 2013, 05:43:58 PM
Well, I mentioned that I'm very close to Hilltop motorycles in Earl Shilton, and Geoff there has had a steady stream of GS's and various other bikes through the door for one of his dyno/remap sessions....

www.hilltopmotorcycles.com is where to find him

So on his advice I paid a visit today... and the first job was to whip the tank off to get to the secondary butterflies  . I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to actually remove the tank, rather than prop it up and have to work underneath it   :cheesy:

Anyway, you've no doubt seen what secondary butterflies look like... so I didn't take any photo's until they were off and the bike was up on the dyno. We didn't bother with an initial dyno run pre-butterfly removal, just the set up afterwards.

First thing Geoff did was plug in his box of tricks and download a completely different map into the ECU.... and then he was able to tweak the map to sort my GTR.

Haven't a clue what he was doing, and as it was quite ... noisy ... in there couldn't ask

Anyway, after a couple of hours of tweaking, and the revelation that the baffle in my Remus Okami was rather strangling the thing... so out it came....and the result of the tweaking is shown in the Dyno graph below

The lower line is the Torque... and it is fairly constant at 90+ ftlb

the upper one is the BHP power curve, which is according to Geoff pretty good, and nice and linear....peaks at 148bhp (back wheel )

He told me the fuelling is now spot on...

So off I went for a little ride...... first impressions  A LOT more responsive, excellent when overtaking, and just as smooth throughout the rev range.

I never wanted more power, but a consequence is an increase  ( I believe standard is around 150 bhp at the crank)

The extra get up and go though is another matter... much nicer for quick overtakes..

So if you fancy having your pride and joy tweaked for the price of an end can  give Geoff a shout   :punk:

Quick Question, did you notice if the bike ran Lean with the Can fitted? Before the tweaks.

Cheers

Didn't particularly notice, but when geoff removed the baffle he showed me signs of overheating on it... he said eventually that would lead to discolouration of the outside of the Remus.

I've not had the can on long after dumping the original torpedo... a fuelling check was one of the reasons for the visit today... and now it's spot on

Great job Bryn. Glad your pleased and have noticed a good difference.

Would have been nice to see a before and after comparison to see how much the flies were holding the torque/bhp figures back.

Understand it though, as it would have suited Geoff better as he would then have had to work at a hot motor to remove the flies after the first run.

How mucho dollars did it cost for the setup?

Does this mean if you have a later bike like I do if you remove the flies and remap the ECU you lose the KTRC?

Geoff charges £360 for the complete job.  Over on the US Zg/gtr forum  I'm told a standard bike iis around 137 bhp at the back wheel. So thats 11bhp more after the remap .. I think the extra torque is more important than peak power though .the torque is fairly constant through the rev range.

You would get a before and after printout with a full set up.. we were just saving time by having no run prior to removing the butterflies.

Having read up quite a bit over on the US forum I believe the KTR C is unaffected.. It's just a change of map

Bryn, does the re-map remove the top speed limiter?

That's not a bad deal mate.. £360 for an extra 11ponies and increase in torque..

Some people spend a lot more than that just trying to eeck an extra 5hp out of their bikes.

Also nice and reassuring to know your fuelling's spot on as well.

I had my K1200R sport done at Hilltop, Geoff took it from 101bhp on the first run to 147 in the end with a corresponding increase in torque. It was like having a new bike, the original map was either corrupted or a French map. It should have been about 137 to start with. When it went for service the technician at BMW said it was the best K series he'd ever ridden, including the 1300's.
So in short I can heartily recommend Hilltop to anyone who feels the need for tuning. Mine will be going as soon as its out of warranty.

You'll manage riding on the left... You may have more problems with the crap driving standards of everyone else though  :whistling:

Nice job Bryn, I'm the wrong area to take advantage of the services you used, but am tempted.

I understand, no-ne really needs top end added to the GTR, but usability that an applied budget offers has to be a great way to go.

One point, with your plate in the photos, I hope your insurance has been advised

Enjoy!

I do not understand that anyone would spend money on "upgrades" since the factory has actually done quite a good job from the start - and this is particularly true for GTR1400.

Incidentally, a small change in relative humidity - then you measure some atronomiske high figures, which is probably better for your psyche than anything you can actually use for something every day.

Waste of money - but good for your inner racer ... and absolutely nothing else!
