Title: compressors
Post by: gunslinger on December 27, 2012, 12:13:20 PM
Hi troops hope you all have been good boys and girls and Santa was good to you ? just been reading some threads on punctures and tyre pressures,I see that we can,t use forecourt air compressors(without 90 degree adapters) due to the valves being inaccessable!!!.I see some of you carry 12v air compressors, can you recommend one that won,t blow the bikes fuse(07 plate) when using the socket on the dash  and a puncture repair system?I used to use ultra seal but see thats a no no due to the tps.Trying to put together all the "bits" the bike needs so we can enjoy riding.
List:- Comms, have starcom from last steed.
         Top box,givi e55 maxia tech,end of Jan.
Re-covered and lowered seat with gel pads.
         Posibble pillion lowered foot pegs
Possibility of enough cash left over to put a gallon of petrol in for a ride out in June!

Hi, I think the pre 2010 models have a 10amp fuse for the cig lighter socket and so any compressor that doesnt exceed that will be fine. The 2010 + models have a 5amp fuse in as I found out to my peril when I plugged my compressor in.

Hopefully somebody more in the know will be on shortly to confirm that this is the case.

Yep, you are right. The 2010 model does have a 5 Amp fuse. I've replaced mine with a 10 Amp and no issues.

In the 20 years I have been Driving and Riding, I have never found a decent compressor that works well from £10 to £40.

I have now resorted to a Halfords Foot Pump.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_564321_langId_-1_categoryId_255241

and have both digital and analogue pressure guages.  I find that the analogue guage always makes the computer sensors read 1-2 PSI High, but the cheap digital (fast bikes mag freebie) works spot on every time.

However, that said - i have 90 degree valve adapters for those sticky moments.

I always carry one of these http://www.pashnit.com/product/cyclepump.html and a plug kit in case of a flat on the road. ( I've gat a 2010 model with a 5amp accessory socket fuse but I fitted a small connector directly wired to the battery ( with 10 amp fuse) for my battery tender which I can use for the mini air compressor.)
For general topping up I have a small workshop compressor at home with a flexible connector. Valves are still fiddly to access though.

Max.

The puncture kits has 3 or 4 CO2 canisters in the kit. Will pump tyre to 30.Bars.
Still need to carry compressor ??

- try to avoid relying on those CO2 cartridges.

- a pump is best.

Why ? Do you think the CO2 cartridges can do harm ?

My mate has a compressor that fits into his cylinder head spark plug aperture, it blows up a flat tyre in about 30 seconds

BTW plugs on his 1960 Triumph are somewhat more accessible than those on a GTR

I use one of theses.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ring-RAC605-Compressor-12v-MotorBike-Tyre-Inflator-Pump-MotorCycle-12-Volt-/230904109224?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item35c2f518a8  and the pressure gauge is accurate because I compared it with the pencil type pressure pop out guage  I did not use the bikes 12v plug to power it thou  I just cut off the 12v plug on the compressor power lead and solder joined a optimate 4 male connector to power it of my female optimate 4 lead which is permanently connected to the bikes battery  also carry one of theses... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Tyre-Puncture-Repair-Inflation-Kit-/200621227958?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2eb5f4ffb6 well I don't want to be hanging around for recovery to turn up then watch him trying is best to damaged my pride and joy loading it :nono:
