I'm sorry, I just don't understand what you are posting about. I gather it's to do with the rear axle - but what exactly?

Regards

Max.

Dont worry Max - I havent got a scoobies either !  I thought that the Tetra Lever thingy related to BMW and their quirky steering system - I must be wrong then.

Im always willing to be corrected though  :mfr_lol:

I think the picture is trying to imply that wheel bearings have failed, the spindle is no longer central in the wheel.

My front wheel bearings were shot at 27k miles, and I think others on here have commented on them not lasting as long as expected.

Aye, replace the wheel bearing with a decent pair. The OEM ones are crap

From his two videos, the right rear wheel bearing seized and it has heated the axle so much that the axle has melted it's way through the aluminium of the swing-arm. See the discolouration of the swing-arm where the axle pokes through and the fact that the axle is no longer central in the swingarm (towards the end of the 2nd video).
That's nasty!!

MG, you will need a new axle, bearings (assuming the wheel is not damaged as well) and a new swing arm.
I would also suggest replacing the brake caliper bracket as that has also been cooked and once heated aluminium loses a lot of it's strength.

I replace my front bearings every 25k miles.
Rears get done at 50k miles.

Sometimes I think that although the GTR is a fabulous bike to ride it's not such a great bike to own.  :undecided:

Well that was written when dog tired after a night shift - I like Boomers plan af periodically replacing the wheel bearings. I guess if you keep on top of the maintenance you * should * have a troublefree experience but as with all things mechanical sometimes there are going to be random failures.

Re your bearing failure MGvalerio I remember the corrosion you had under the fuel tank - do you by chance live close to the sea where your bike gets exposed to a salt air environment ? Possibly could contribute to a wheel bearing failure ?

My city Cascina (PI) is 36 km from the sea.

My town (Wickford) is 4km from the sea (Thames estuary) and nowhere in the UK will you get more than 72 miles (115Km) from the sea.
Salt air can have a long term effect on car bodies but you are talking 10+ years these days.
Of course if you park it on the seafront every day then you can reduce that drastically.

The most common killer of wheel bearings are jet washes. The jet blasts the grease out of the bearing and they seize pretty fast after that.
So, just don't clean your bike!   :whistling:

- someone on one of the US forums responded to these vids by saying that it was probably caused by the axle nut not being tightened properly, allowing the axle to turn in the swingarm.

That is one comprehensively knackered bearing

Very lucky it didn't cause you lose control and crash !

That will not make any difference if the bearing is OK, and if the bearing seizes then the axle will rotate in the swingarm even if the castle nut is as tight as you can make it.
What I can't believe is that MG did not notice that there was a problem.
I had a similar problem happen on an XS250 back in the early 80s and it felt like someone had stepped on the back brake for me.

- boomer : if the axle began turning in the swingarm , it would affect the right side (as shown in MG's vids) as the left is supported by the drive gear. Eventually , the axle would lie at an angle and then it will destroy the bearing.

- i understand you're saying that the bearing failed first , but bearing failure will not result in the swingarm portion melting. Perhaps if the bearing failed , seized solid and then welded itself onto the axle. This will then result in the axle turning in the swingarm (resulting in the same ending for MG).

- whatever it is , you're right that the rider would have noticed it first in any event , considering the magnitude of the failure there. But we all know that there are very many oblivious riders/drivers out there.

DX bearing part of the axis of the rear wheel was already missing four balls from its beginning, then transferred abruptly, there are other explanations for this exception touched me.

But we all know that there are very,MGvalerio non รจ uno sprovveduto.

The mileage with the C14 do not text this to prevent my information, my bearing has not broken for mileage but for lack of balls 4 inside ... understand.

MG just had a look at the videos and doesn't look to me that the bearing was originally faulty with 4 balls short as you say,

Looks to me like the bearing has heated up, started to seize and has disintegrated the mild steel bearing holders, as there are 7 balls in the good bearing and there is 7 in the bad bearing that I can see, or have I missed one?

You obviously know about mechanics as your posts on here show you are certainly spanner handy and I can't understand Italian or give the bearing closer inspection than through the videos but from what I see the bearings have simply moved round in the outer races through the ball cage breaking down.

The bearing housing in the wheel doesn't look too bad but hard to tell if it's still as round as should be without a micrometer/ Vernier callipers.....

Hope it doesn't cast too much to fix. Good luck mate.

No problem mate,

At least it would ease the fear that Kawasaki build quality was so shit that they used bearing with only half the number of balls... that would be a real quality control issue...

Unfortunately anything mechanical can fail and it's not always easy to reason why.

If you get new bearings with easily removable seals make sure there's plenty of grease in them before assembly.

Good luck and like I said.. hope it doesn't turn out too expensive.

Cheers.
Al.

Yes Boomer  :sweatdrop:

I'm already running with GTR 1400, I put a spacer in place of the holder clamp, removing the clamp from the GTR 1400, all of this is to go to the BAR, or bakery.
