Title: Crash protection
Post by: Mean1400 on November 25, 2012, 02:28:08 PM
Hi, I was in Thailand on vacation last week and saw five Malaysian Police men with there 1400 GTR police bikes as private holiday bikes.

They all had crash protection but I have never seen the type they had.

Anyone now anything about them?

The ones in the second picture look similar to the R&G protectors

Sorry for the big pictures...

Thanks Debs for links.

Any comments on what model that's best? I just bought the Top Block sliders.

Well you might have fitted them to your bike, but I meant that I hope you don't actually have to use them for their intended purpose!  Like protecting the bike whilst it's sliding down the road, for example!

I can tell you from personal experience that the Kawasaki ones for the earlier model work. The Top Block ones for the later model fit and look exactly the same (and look the nicest IMO).

R G crash protectors are very good, seen here on my 2008/9 GTR

When I changed for a 2010 GTR they wouldn't fit as the top through frame mounting bolt was about 1/2" too long, which suggested that some frame modification had been made between model upgrades, since that time the Crash bungs have laid in my workshop. I ought to try and fit them to my 2011 GTR

They look straight forward to fit.... but I'd guess that you'd have the same issues with a 2011 as a 2010?

if you fail miserably and want to pass them on let me know  :whistling:

Looks like R&G only offer Adventure bars for the 2010+ models.
I have those mounted on mine and unlike the monstrosities Debs has on her baby they are very unobtrusive and follow the contours of the fairing.  :whistling:
The only disadvantge is that you have to take them off too when you want to remove the fairing.

Bryn they are fairly straightforward to fit, I just need to try them on the 2011 model, if they are still a bit long then I could cut a bit off the end after first lengthening the thread on the Mounting 'rod', which goes through the frame and top rea engine mounting.

I'll get round to it soon (I hope)

Went to the show today, the R&G adventure bars look good, they look better in the flesh than on pictures. The police bike on the kwak stand had them fitted. I was told they are £190 but they are on offer if bought at the show.

Sorry Alan, i did not enquire, but any less than RRP has to be a bonus, the R&G stall is only 50 yards from the kwak stand ( as you walk into hall 2 its on the left against the wall )

Let us all know though if you enquire, thanx

They are far better than the scaffolding Debs has, i'm sure debs is a GTRGS  :mfr_lol:

I am glad someone finally said it, they look hideous, like you crashed into a scaffold truck. But if you like them and give you peace of mind then rock on

With the greatest respect to Debs and her choices those bars look like The sort of shoes Eskimo's use.

BUT, if you drop your bike anything to protect the panels is better than nothing.

Hidious? Well you are welcome to your opinion even tho you are talking out of your ass.

Besides protecting the bike more than any of the "small" sliders, they will also protect my legs if I ever get side swiped by a car.

If the bike does fall on me I know that I wont get another broken ankle or worse.

I think the look awesome and mean looking with my spot lights fitted to them.

They cant be that bad as ALL the Concours 14 Police Bikes in the USA have them fitted.

BTW thats 2 off my Christmas Card list (http://www.desismileys.com/smileys/desismileys_6727.gif) (http://www.desismileys.com/)  :mfr_lol:

Hi Debs,  not going to get in a slanging match with you,, but it is my opinion. Not asking you to remove them, just would not have them myself

If my bike was about to go down I would chuck women and kids underneath it to protects the side panels, I can see Deb's logic and reasoning but from my point of view would perhaps go about it another way.

Can I be put back on the Christmas card list please?  :mfr_lol:

I agree. it does look  :shit:.
If you are going to put protection on that spoils the look of the bike like that ( might as well of put a roll cage around the bike ), then you are better off not riding a bike at all.
However, that being said, it his Debs' choice.

One man's (or woman's) meat is another's poison.

Doesn't do for us all to like the same, life would be boring.

:agree: on that.

My choice was the Top Blocks because I want the protection to as invisible as possible and still work if I tip the bike over. My goal isn't to find a protection that can handle a real crash.

I did crash my earlier Honda CBR1000F in 60 km/h in the city of Stockholm and no crash protection would have helped the fairings there. Or my knee...

20 years ago I did tip my BMW K100RS over and don't want that to happend again. You get very angry when that happen...

A shame tge GTR isn't as tip resistant as some of my past bikes... Had a 1200 GS for two days, decided to do a green lane  5 miutes later it was upside down in a ditch full of brambles.. Tiny scuff on the engine bars was the only evidence

At the show the R&G bars were £182.50

The GS is a so-called adventure bike and designed to be ridden on roads you would be absolutely  to take a GTR.  :surrender:
So of course it is designed to withstand minor mishaps.
Well, it looks and feels that way too, and that's why I don't have one.

I used to ride a Honda XR500R for a couple of years when I was younger and I would go anywhere on it - even on motocross tracks.
OK, I broke a few brake and clutch levers but otherwise it survived lots of drops more or less unscathed.
It had not just a soft plastic tank but all non-metalic bits were also made from thick, soft plastic as well.
The indicators were made out of rubber and all the bits that stuck out were designed to fold if you dropped the bike.
In other words it was designed to be ridden off-road, and when you do that you inevitably will drop it sooner than later.
But I wouldn't want to go on tour or shopping on one of those either.

Well, I guess you sat down and/or went really slow when you attempted to ride that green lane.
And having road tyres on doesn't help either.
Otherwise you probably would have made it without falling off.  :whistling:
Rule No 1 for off-road riding - You may sit down and take it slower on the easy bits but you stand up for better balance and give it stick to take the weight off the front wheel on the hard parts.

Debs, take no notice, God forbid your bike ever goes down I know I'd rather replace a set of crash bars than a full fairing especially having seen the damage caused to one GTR at the Cotswolds meet this year after a 10mph spill.

I'm sure 2kwacks will agree wont ya Dave?

:stupid:....function and form, the bars on Debs bike are designed to do a job, and I imagine that's exactly why she has them fitted

Good on yer Debs.
