Hi All. if you have a Givi top box, specifically the E55 maxia. Check the lock mechanism is in good order and that the box is secure.
I was goind on a ride out last saturday. I had a 30 mile journey to meet at a friends house. When i pulled up at the house, no topbox. I hadnt noticed a thing. Luckily a kind passer by saw the box smashed open and the contents strewn along the side of the road. He kindly gathered up all the contents, found a flyer with my number on it, called me and reunited me with my belongings. He had found the box within 2 miles of my friends house. Hows your luck
The box itself was beyond repair and we also noticed that the locking mechanism was in bits. I'm not sure if it failed and thats what allowed the box to fall off or if it was as a result of the fall. But i had not taken the box off my bike for months and have covered several thousand miles in that time.
Right while you go check your top boxes are secure, i'm off to find a new one on ebay.
Blimey! That was a lucky escape!
Incidentally, whilst I was at the bike show at the weekend, I visited the Givi stand and spoke about the standard topcase... After much whinging about it's flimsiness, the bloke said he would send me a new locking mechanism and rubber thingies (for the frame) free of charge...
Maybe give Givi a call before you purchase a new one?
Cheers
Ros
Nogoslow Is your Top Box mounted to your bike with a GIVI mounting plate ?
I never trust any box to plate locking mechanism. I had a Touratech box seperate from the mounting plate a few years ago - and they are HD connectors to the plate. Luckily I got it back but from then on I use a quick release tension strap every time.
Oh yes how many of us follow the max capacity recommendations - not me for one!
I agree the GTR topbox is a bit flimsy but then again TT was complete overkill wasnt it?
Yep, It was mounted to the Givi plate. I shall definitely be adding a strap of some sort when i buy the replacement. I cant put it down to weight. all that was in the box was a couple of spare visors, empty sat nav pouch, spare gloves and a cleaning cloth.
I never take my topbox off so I think Im going to Bolt it on through the inside.
Im not keen on using a strap over the top incase it rubs the lid and leave a mark.
I had a mate water jet me an alloy exact replica mounting plate and so far touch wood rock solid and still there even at 140 mph.
The original one is in the garage under the bench to go back on when I sell the bike.

Sorry to hear about your topbox.I have the Kawasaki one,and it came undone and rolled onto the pillion seat.I managed to grab mine at the time.I have since bought some clamps from my local hardware store, for 80p each.I,ve put two small holes in the box,and it clamps to the underside of the bottom of the grab rail.Hope you find a replacement at a good price. cheers.
Funilly enough i am thinking of buying a givi helmet, hope that does'nt cfome off.
For mud from 18,000 Euro, this plate is the minimum to put on GTR 1400.

MGvalerio.
I know it's poor taste to wave try to oversell your owndecisions, but I'm delighted with my Ventura system.
When not in use I can put on a low profile grab bar in less than a minute, and then have a bag that can provide a secure load for 15-35 litres, I think the bags go up to 45 litres and can by zipped together, so a potential load of 90 litres.
Admittedly the way I use it is as a work bag and remove from the bike at each end of the journey, but all ventura bags become shoulder bags or back packs in a matter of seconds. If I need security I use the panniers....
Why so many words - we at around £260 for the set I have, not a cheap entry price, but at £60 to convert to fit the next bike, not too bad.
Non-Fango 852 boxes mounted on both my 1400 & GTR1000 for a combined total of well over 250,000 miles since 1997.
They always used a metal tongue that the box locks to which has hardly worn and the box has never come off despite me frequently overloading it.
Have watched friends Givis go bouncing down the road on 3 occasions, almost always due to wear in the plastic tongue that they lock to.
My advice would be to get a decent quality plate that uses a metal tongue.
Either that or else make yer own plate and get the posts/tongue kit.
I too have ever had this experience where the GIVI top box flew off when I failed to secure it properly to the Alum Plate.
What I have done now is to drill a couple of holes in the box's bottom and cable tie it the rack as a precautionary measure. I'll try to take a couples of fotos...
it is only a matter of tooth, mine is aluminum, 100% safety.

Mgvalerio.
mines the alloy plate. i think it was the locking mechanism in the box that failed. it was in pieces when we picked up the wreckage.
I just took delivery of a complete new locking mechanism that Givi sent me for free as per my above post...

Care to take a Picture and share... I too.. Also worries about my top box flying off... Thus drilling a couple of holes and cable-tie it to the Base Plate as a precaution.
These parts were for the lock rather than the part that attatches it to the frame.
My point was that it would be worth speaking to them if you have some defective or worn parts because they may get them to you for free too.
I'll take some pics, but won't be until at least tomorrow night...
Gotta go to bed now and then drive to France and back tomorrow...
