Title: Eclectic tast
Post by: O.C. on November 12, 2012, 08:00:16 AM
Now, this has absolutely nothing to do with bikes, but I have a eclectic passion in music and have a good collection of CDs etc.,  over the years I have indulged that passion for music by going to plenty live concerts, in fact lots of them

My music collection spreads from Adiemus to ZZ Top, with hundreds of albums in between, and YES I have a sad, nay very sad, admission to make, which is that my collection is alphabetically listed/stored  :embarrassed:

Last night we went to another live performance, this time at the Liverpool Echo Arena, to see an artiste of truly world class quality, and we were both absolutely blown away, I've NEVER experienced the few hairs on my neck actually standing up before....really.

The Artiste in question ?.......................Andrea Bocelli.

Gill was in tears and I'll admit I was close myself.

What a voice, and yep, ok, there was  lots of 'opera' singing, but do you know what, it didn't matter, he even sang some modern classics and played the Accoustic Guitar as his own accompaniment.

Sorry to be so far off the bike topic, but for us it was a once in a lifetime very, very  special experience, he finished by singing Nessun Dorma !

To anyone who hasn't experienced his singing live then I recommend that you do so, its just one of those things that you must do before you die...I'm so very, very glad we did.

I have a Fender Jazz Bass, which I have to admit doesn't get played much these days, don't get me wrong I'm not good, but I enjoy picking up bits from the backing on tracks.

I'm tempted to quote Eric Morecambe and say "I play all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order"  :mfr_lol: The kind of bass I like is more up front as can be heard in a Joe Jackson Track...Like this

BTW sorry about the guy introducing this track..

BTW I wish I could play the Harmonica Like this....I have tried, but to no avail  :mfr_lol:

my uncle died last year , he'd been living on a house boat  in san francisco since he " dropped out" in 73 whilst doing the dark side tour. After his death there was loads of stuff on the net about him, tributes and all sorts. A film maker contacted me telling me that he had a short film about Alan and as the film contained PF music could not be released, due to copyright .
I have a way into david gilmour, he and Alan were childhood friends , and a couple of emails later PF gave me permission to go public with the video , which i did, the film maker even credited me for making it happen , in the comments.

you can still pick up on alans cambridge accent, where we are all from.

its a lovely little film, and made my mum and aunty cry as they never knew of its existance .

Viper, what an abolutely fantastic story, I loved the You tube video..

Your uncle Alan was clearly a man who was very much at peace with himself.

Thanks very much for sharing

he was awesome and the coolest person you could ever meet, a proper free loving old school hippie . In the early days all the band looked up to him , but sadly as the commericial ism and the big management took over it was not for him and he decided to do the flowers in your hair thing and move to frisco. Gilmour kept in touch with him on and off over the years through my mother ( his sister ) and managed to cut him a royalties deal in the early nineties , which gave him a few dollars each month .
He is on the left on the album cover  ummagumma

this all PF and the crew in san tropez when they did Meddle, Alan is back row on the right. The little girl on the left , blonde side profile is Naomi watts, ( actress ( king kong) , her dad, peter watts is just to the right, he was a roadie and school mates with Alan

I also played bass (badly), and drums (less badly).
My claim to fame was that I roadied for Motorhead during their 1982 tour ending in 4 nights at Hammersmith Odeon.
Damned hard work but a lot of fun too.

As for music tastes, mine is varied but focusses on the VERY heavy end of the spectrum.
I have a Celine Dion album recorded in French (she is much better in French), I have Frankie goes to Hollywood, I have some jazz and some classical, but most of my collection is "Rock" and ranges from Genesis/Floyd/Hawkwind through Rush/Queen/Metallica to Machine Head/BoltThrower/Nile.
If you want to upset the neighbours then turn up the volume and play this

<Looks puzzled> Isn't everyone's? and the DVDs. How else would you find what you're looking for?

Not that I can remember when I last played a CD mind, it's all stored on the PC/iPods/iPhones nowadays. Squeezeboxes are on synchronised random play indoors and in the garage which log what we're listening to on Last.FM - our profile (http://www.last.fm/user/kweller). I've discovered quite a bit of music because of that site.

Nice video Viper.

Aaaah!  It's nice to be amongst fellow musicians!

That's a terrific story and great vid!  A helluva claim to fame.

I play a variety of instruments, but at the moment am concentrating on drums.  Or guitar where the drums become anti-social.....

I started off very young with classical stuff on clarinet and piano, then moved to guitar, bass and drums.  I spent all my spare cash (and more) on drums... that's my fav instrument!

I managed a blues-rock band when I was living in Paris - singer/guitarist/songwriter from Australia and we did a whole load of support acts for folks like Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, - even Zucchero...  We made a couple of albums independently and managed to get them on the shelves in the Fnac next to INXS, Midnight Oil and the like.

Those were the days!  But it's a particularly tough business...

Should we be looking at starting a forum band?   :mfr_lol:

cheers
