A few photo's of the install... that may be of help if anyone is thinking of doing the same...
First thing, screen off, Central tank cubby hole ( mine's an 09 ) and black upper fairing covers off ....
This is what you then see

Skipping the intricacies...the main thing to look at was where to mount the ballasts and the control units to the kit...
We decided on the upper bolt through the foam on the twistgrip side as a good mounting point for the control unit... its an M6 into a captive nut, so the M6 nut removed and a longer M5 with a nyloc nut used to secure the whole thing again. You can get enough play in the fairing to get to the bolt by removing the allen bolts on the fairing and GENTLY pulling it out a little....

The ballast for that side will then bolt to a captive nut you will see ... it's not used on this side so is ideal. The earth on that side can go on the same mount..The throttle side original headlight connector block is above the ballast taped up in the picture below. This is where you plug in the Hi/Low control.... you can see the Hi/Low cable below the ballast
Main cable can be cable tied to the frame under the clocks
(http://i354.photobucket.com/albums/r403/GSAnut/IMG_0601.jpg)
Left hand side ( sidestand side) there's not so much room.... so slightly different location for the ballast... it can be fastened to the end of one of the mirror bolts, using a nyloc nut... same for the earth
(http://i354.photobucket.com/albums/r403/GSAnut/IMG_0602.jpg)
Make sure the wires from each headlight are not affected by the existing loom, you don't want them being disturbed each time you turn the handlebars. There's a lot of loom sticking out on the throttle side, along with the throttle cables, meaning its a bit tight down there
(http://i354.photobucket.com/albums/r403/GSAnut/IMG_0604.jpg)
Power to the battery ... self explanatory... the controller is easier to connect to the non sidestand side....
Don't forget to tape up and store out the way the original left hand lamp connector ....
All back together and Bob's your father's brother
Great write up Bryn, something I might get around to someday but other things to do to mine first, still trying to get the main things sorted, liked the detailed pics, bound to help some.....
Can never have too much info..
Al.
Yep :agree: thanks for sharing Bryn
Excellent notes - seems a lot of hard work but I guess the benefits are obvious!!

:mfr_lol: The benefits should be clear to see :mfr_lol:
....I'll get my coat
Bryn, I never noticed if you worked out if the bulb comes apart, ie the magnetic switch and bulb twists out of the bulb holder like a baynet light bulb fitting.
Forgive me if you know that. Something you have to watch for is that mine separated I would imagine from vibration and the bulb dropped out slightly from the bulb holder, and the bulb dropped onto the rubber headlamp seal and the first I knew of it was when I got off the motorway and stopped at the lights and all this smoke came poring up off the rubber.
So just keep an eye on them and make sure their twisted in.
Nice work Bryn!
That's neater than mine, but the, I have the 2010 model and there's even less room on the left due to the box thingy.
Did you stick some LEDs in the sidelights too?
Ros
OC ... " I'll get my coat" !!!! :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
I wonder how many here would know what that relates to .... just makes me weep with laughter !!!

I know what you mean.... and the other thing to look out for in the install is when you push the unit as a whole in and twist not to give it too much 'finger torque' as the little grommets won't take much hammer...
I'll keep my eye on the burners

LED's went in before the HID's.... problem is that ( being OCD picky) the LED's are a little 'bluey' compared to the white light produced by the HID's.
Alan, my friendly installer, has the same set of HID's on his FJR and he sent me a link to a set of LED's he's fitted, which produce a colour nearer to the HID's

This happened to me last week on the way back from France... On the M20 from Dover I could smell burning rubber.. Looked down and could see the bulb had popped out... This is not the first time its come out but the first time its burnt the rubber... Dont know how to stop it in the future... hmmm.
What do you mean they pop out??? Mine are sealed units, I think!
One thing you could possibly do is smear a bit of Silicone sealant in there when you connect it...should stop any vibration....
The lugs that hold it in are pretty flimsy, so any over tightening could make them weak or ineffective.....
The whole lot is in turn held in place by the wire thingy that held the original bulbs in place
Well.... not had a chance until today to take the bike out in the dark.... Rode to work today on it...and I was concerned at the way the bike was illuminating road signs on BOTH sides of the road, despite the correct adjustment on both units... it appears that the cut off, when set right is where it should be , but there is a band of 'overspill' light a good two feet higher at 6 feet away.... which has got to do with the way the bulb distributes the light with the reflector provided.
At one stage there were signs on a slip road 4 LANES to my offiside well lit up by my headlights... that has GOT to piss off other motorists...
I've also read over on UKGSer of a couple of riders being fined 200 euro for each HID burner over in Austria this summer.....
So just spent 2 hours removing the HID's and putting the standard fit bulbs back in... I think it will be less hassle in the long run

That's a shame after all the trouble you went to installing the kit in the first place, maybe you can return it to the supplier as "not fit for purpose".
Debs, the tiniest amount of glue should do it, small enough that a hand twist would be able to part it.

More trouble than it's worth to try and return it I think.... will try selling it on ebay.... it may just be that the beam pattern is wrong due to the shape of the GTR's reflectors....
The kit will work with anything, including cars so worth a try

Yes I will try that. Thx
