Post by: tapps on November 01, 2012, 07:01:37 PM
a mate of mine enquired about doing a p/x,he like me has a 2012 gtr1400,we both got a new gtr at the same time, mine has 4.5k on it & my mate's has 4k on the clock & they are about 7 month's old, this was on a new HONDA VFR1200.the dealer got his book out & said £8,100 in the book he'll go to £9,000 each in p/x,my pal is a little short & struggle's to touch the ground,i advised him to go for a LOWER SEAT.under no cicumstance's will i consider getting rid of mine,i never even gave the dealer my detail's.that work's out at a total cost of 8k plus my gtr,I DONT THINK SO SOMEHOW !!!!!!!!!!!!! FOOL  :nono: :nono: :nono:

i think 9k for your gtr is a good offer, considering that 20% of the purchase price went to the revenue and not the dealer when you bought it means that you have probably lost about £1500  , not bad me thinks

im confused on the numbers here, im seeing vfr1200 full retail price at about 12.5 k, so if the dealer is giving you 9k for the gtr  thats a difference of 3.5 k, but you said 8k plus your bike , or am i reading your post wrong ??

this bike ??

The VFR isnt a patch on the GTR, and only a 90 mile tank range

unfortunatley it is not a ha ha ha  situation ,it is reality!! this is all you would get for your bike part ex,in fact its quite a good  offer from a dealer.once you buy  a new bike you will take a big hit, there is always only one winner ,the dealers!!!!

The dealers usually win in the end I agree but here's my story.  I wanted a low miles good nick GTR. The '10 plate one I saw in Guildford was up for £9600 but for cash they'd do it for £9200.  I sold my showroom nick '06 Tiger to another dealer for £3.5 and rang Guildford. They stalled me for the weekend until I rang them on Monday to be told the bike had sold - nice of them!

With my pot of cash I contact the private seller of a 10 plate CAF i was in contact with and talk a deal over the phone. Sure enough I pick up bike following Thursday and rest is history.

Oh, what about the 06 Tiger the dealer in Exeter bought off me for £3.5k?  Well it's been there since June with £4999 on its screen.  Sheer greed holding out for that in a market full of Ewan and Charlie's finding out that the road of bones stuff isn't really for them!
Knowing that % margin is typically what they work on I'm glad I bought private and took the risk.

The 9k offered doesn't sound too bad considering the VAT bombshell first off.

If i had the additional funding I would have searched out a recent pre-registered bike and lived with the additional owner to get round that one.

i think a £1500 mark up on your bike seems fair, they will pay vat on the profit which is £300, they will need to put a warranty on which is about £200 then they will have to give a bit to negotiate a deal , so that brings their gross profit down to £800,  take out business overheads and wages and interest on holding all that stock and they are left with about £200 -£300 and then they will pay the tax man 20% on the profit, if they were all raking it in so many would not be going to the wall.

Viper hits the nail on the head  :agree:

Its not as easy for dealers to make a profit as it may first appear. There is substantial investment in equipment and staff training to consider as well, manufacturers do place considerable pressure on dealers conforming to manufacturer/importer standards.

The £9K offer probably wasn't that bad in reality

The problem that is now and in the foreseeable future, from someone that buys bikes:

Second hand trade in prices are not what they once were, compared to the prices for new bikes.

I think this has it good and bad points, but perhaps I'm just getting old.

i must have been mad selling my mint gtr june 2010 with 2900 miles on it  for £8300,in january ( i think!) but i wanted to sell it at the time and thats all i could get for it, as i mentioned before it was sold to a policeman in ireland, but  the dealer did offer me £6600 though!! to be honest i still think that it was a one of the best looking 10 plate gtr's i have seen

I have just been offered £7500 for my 10 plate against a £9695 11 plate, eventhough my bike would retail at £8500+, my bike is a minter with extras, i am looking for a black 61 +plate, but at £7500 its a little too far away to trade, so am going to try private sale over the weekend.
