Title: Front Brakes
Post by: Essex Boy on October 31, 2012, 02:04:16 PM
All we seem to be reading about on the Forum are GTR problems and sadly I have to add my two penneth worth again, although  :cheesy: to the local dealership in C...............

Am now on my 3rd set of Front pads in 8 months and 9,500 miles. Running home from work a few days ago the front end braking wasn't biting as it should and so once in the garage got down to inspect the pads:- nothing, nader, niet......virtually running metal to metal. No wonder no brakes.

Taken to Kawasaki in Colchester, and without prompt they got onto the phone to the big Mr K.

Awaiting the call back in now for complimentary new Discs and Front Pads.

Discs below their minimum within 8 months. She is a big beasty to slow down of course, but clearly something wrong.

So we can add that to the list, but  for C.......... Kawasaki for sorting me.

Essex Boy.

the kawasaki discs can not be very good  as standard , i am going to try some armstrong ones off ebay  as useing kawasaki ones seems a waste of time . got my bike from chester motorad and even tho it came with a 3 month warranty  they will not change them . they said they was ok when it left them . i went to fit new pads and the pads will not fit as the discs are out of true and worn and lipped .  ,,,,,,,,,,,,

I would return to Chester Motorrad, and ask them to explain the point of a dealer warranty if they are going to give that kind of response when you try to excercise your rights

The whole point of having a warranty is to cover your costs in the event of a repair

Sorry, I don't understand this..... Really I don't.

There is/was a warping issue on MK I bikes, but this was pretty much sorted on the MK II.

Having said that, they need tender loving care...  I'm now at 39500 miles on the original disks and about 2/3rds through the 3rd set of pads.  10-12k is about average.

Pads I always use are EBC HH, and I changed the brake fluid to 5.1 at 22k miles.  Because I do a lot of miles, I regularly inspect, remove dirt and debris with a toothbrush and make sure the floating buttons on the disks are not seized.

This is not a flame, I just fail to understand, what's going wrong.  I live in Cambridge and am really interested in what is causing this malfunction, bike, brakes, pads or dare I say it - P.I.C.N.I.C.

Thanks.

Neil

what mileage had your bike done at the point of replacing discs! did fit front and rear armstrong wavy discs and arstrong pads on my zrx1200, they seem to stop the bike fine and produced good solid feel to the brake lever when braking from high speed, also looked dam good to  but sold the bike before I had chance to see how they lasted over time and mileage. did find the armstrong wavy discs did cause a very annoying pulsating of the front brake lever and noise when braking at low speeds only. they were fine from braking at high speed, but soon as I reach under 20 m.p.h still applying steady pressure on the front brake lever this would cause pulsating of the front brake lever and cause an annoying clicking noise. did enquire about this, but armstrong technical boffs said this is normal and is caused by the pads brushing over the vent slots in the discs. here is pic of the armstrong discs I fitted on my zrx1200s

I am on my third GTR only problems i have had are the re-calls, done 50,000 + miles easily so far, don't understand the problems, brilliant bike. As already said a bit of TLC does pay dividends.

my bike had only done 8000m when i got it . i have done  1000m since the problem came up that when it went in for the ohlins upgrades i asked them to fit some pads as they looked low . they fitted the pads but as the wheel turned it made a clicking noise as the lip of disc caught the pads  they kais suspension said the dics had had it  and to fit the new pads would be a waste of new pads, chester motorad said it was in service limits when it left them . they was going to swop the shock but since i took it off the bike  they will not do that as it could have come from anywhere . i should have joined the gtr club before i got the bike then i would have had this knowledge . the warrantry was just a verbal one by the salesman i said what does it cover he said anything ,  apparently not .

Disks in 9000 miles...  I think you Ohlins dealer was pulling your chain.

Do they have big windows?  Cause I think they saw you coming.....?

Knightrider, tales like this really disappoint me. Have you had your bike less than three months?

Okay Ubertours , but I am guessing you have worn out 17 pairs of Motorcycle boots instead ....do you never use brakes ?

My OEM pads lasted 25k miles front and the rears are still in there at 50k miles.
Front EBC HHs fitted at 25k and again at 48k so  only 23k miles for them.
IF you ride it like a sportsbike, don't expect the brakes & tyres to last.  :smartass:

Front disc/pads changed under warranty - and changed to the new ZZR14 parts (they fit and my dealer would test that).
Since then... no problems!

My rear disc still under observation - mainly rust/spots...

Not very often, they only slow you down!!
