Post by: Deon on October 24, 2012, 02:33:45 PM
Have you guys in the UK gone into hibernation for winter already ? No posts today from anyone !!!

What am I going to do down here in South Africa whilst you are all hibernating ? This forum is my daily fix. What am I going to do now ???

Deon, I don't think we have gone into hibernation just yet, bit I think that its not far from the time where most of us put our bikes into hibernation.

I'll keep the GTR 'om stand by' just in case I can get out on her, but the classics are ready to be tucked up for the winter months with nice snug heaters underneath them to keep them nice and warm ..............yeah really

The forecast predicts that very cold weather is on its way real soon.

It is amazing what you guys have to go through every year OC. I do not envy you for one second.
Down here in SA, we prefer riding during our winter months as the temps are a lot lower than summer and we do not get as much wind in winter than we get during the summer months.

Looks like this forum will be quiet for a while then !!!    :mfr_lol:

I'll be riding mine to work when the weather's not too bad .....

There's the thought that it's a modern vehicle, so providing it's cleaned and washed down regularly it's not going to do it that much harm ....

Then on the other hand.. it's squeaky clean at the moment and the car's sitting outside

+1. Mine is going for All Year Biker treatment next weekend, not to be stored away, but to be used every single day there is not ice and snow. We are fortunate in the south that the periods of time when it is not possible to have the Black Beast out are very limited. Then I have to go crawling to Wifey to borrow her car.

I imagine the salt that they put on your roads must be a problem for the bikes ( as in cleaning afterwards ) ??

A more grit based material is used these days as the salt proved expensive and could wash away.....I'd still be wary obout subjecting the GTR to a dose of grit though

Regular washing down after a ride would be the order of the day

It's a motorcycle not an ornament.
Yer supposed to ride it not polish it and admire it.
Well, you can polish and admire it so long as you do ride it.
My 2007 has survived 2 winters worth of grit and salt and while she's no show bike, she still looks pretty good.
As for riding, well I won't ride when it's icy or the roads are covered in snow.
Otherwise I'm out in most weathers for my regular fix.

I have wondered how the Sunny Sunday Riders have managed this year.
I think the total for this year was 4 Sunny Sundays.
My personal mileage has plummeted this year due to not commuting on her any more.
Last year to end December was 21,000 miles, this year I probably should beat 4,000.
My usual average is between 8k and 10k miles per year.

Yeah well the Gendarmerie won't care too much about that.  They're just interested in lining the pockets of the ex president...

Isn't it November before the breathalyser thing becomes a requirement....I got some for my recent trip though, just to be on the safe side.

Rosbif is right, you have to carry them even if you don't drink.

Oh and remember a walking stick even if you haven't got a broken leg  :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:

That's a load of   :shit:  in my opinion !! Will you get fined if you don't have one ?

Seems to me that it is a good way for the authorities to save money on breathalyser equipment !!

There's often a penalty for non observance, so you probably will (if caught),

You do have to carry a breathalyser in France.  If you are stopped you must have one available, hence you need two in case you have already been stopped and used one, and required to supply a further test.

If the test indicates you have alcohol then a substansive one will be taken by the police on their own equipment which will be a calibrated evidential test.

It came in in July but isn't to be enforced until November 2012.

Oh, and they must be in date, so even if you have some they don't last forever!

And you will be fined if you don't have an unused one with you.
