Hi Bryn,
The HID topic has been discussed on this forum many times before. Hit the "search" button ( top RH corner ) and I'm sure you will find many posts/discussions.
I personally do not understand why anyone would want to fit an HID kit to the GTR as the standard lights are very good. Having said that, down here in SA we do not tend to travel a lot in the dark and our weather is also not as "dark and misty" as the UK, so there is probably no need for an upgrade anyway. Many guys down here have fitted the Nightbreaker PLUS globes to their bikes but this is more "to be seen" as oppose to see ( if you know what I mean ).
For me, the standard lights are good enough.
I have to add, that this is only MY personal opinion and I am in no way stating that those that have fitted HID kits are in the wrong ( because that is THEIR choice !! ).

Hi Deon....

HID's look brighter, run cooler and use less power... other than that no reason to fit them     I've got a full set up with slimline ballasts ( Hi/lo) for under £50 so worth fitting to me personally

Tried searching .... nothing actually answers my question about ballast placement, hence my question here

 :agree:

Mostly...

I had fitted an HID to my GS.  being surrounded by fields we can't even see street lights reflected off the clouds round here and so for winter commuting the additional feeling of safety was incredible - despite the GS originally having the best lights I've had on a bike.

I had also looked around the forum for advice as, on the GS, I had heard that the ballasts should be fitted somewhere reasonably dry, but well ventilated as they do generate quite a bit of heat.

With the GTRs enclosed fairings I was unsure where a suitable location would be - I am keen on a lighting upgrade, but don't want to end up in the dark due to misplacing the ballasts. So any advice, knowledge, or even a little hearsay would be very welcome.

Geoff, just got this reply to the same question over on ADVrider

"Mount ballasts on top of the air-intake snorkles
...can be held in place with 3-M brand sticky sided velcro and a velcro strap or zip-tie if desired
...run 12v power directly from the battery (fuse it 30A right at the battery) and run it up the right side of the fairing
...use tank mounted 'glove box' to house the two 10A fuses for the lamps "

Sounds like a plan

Thanks Bryn - I'll have a nose around.

Looking in to the legality the comment that seems the clincher is that if the dipped/main/big bright flashy light is also an HID light then it will not activate immediately when switched whilst riding.  That seems to be where the H7s bulbs fail the test. On my previous bike I had the H4 bulbs with a separate dip beam bulb, and the HID was user adjustable, and so I think that was legal.  I'm not so sure about the GTR any more, so I may need to re-think.

The H4's I'm fitting has a servo to switch between dip and main, so should behave just like a normal bulb.....  A mate has just fitted a set to his FJR and they work really well.... nice and bright, and providing they're adjusted correctly shouldn't cause any bother
