Title: excess fuel drainage did not work
Post by: kfshman on October 01, 2012, 02:28:47 PM
Hi (please bear with my English)
I am new to this place and would like to thank you all for your support
I purchased a stored brand new GTR 2 weeks ago
I love the motorcycle.
in the first wash (i was lucky not using too much water) i realized that the water did not leak from the fuel container  and i had to absorb it myself with a cloth.
Then went and put some fuel to act as if the fuel is over filling the tank, still no drainage for the excess fuel, what do you think? please i need your advice
Thank you

Ros

for example
normaly if you over fill the tank with fuel, the excess fuel should drain under the motorcycle.
well this will not happen in my bike and the extra fuel will spill outside the tank. that means the drainage is not open or clogged
my first language is Arabic

At todays fuel prices who in his right mind would over-fill his tank?
And how the heck did you get water in the tank while washing your bike in the first place?  :ohplease:

- when you fill your tank

- the fuel does not drain anywhere

- the fuel goes into the tank

- when the tank is full , the fuel pump of the fuel station stops automatically.

- if you force more fuel into the tank , eventually there will be too much fuel and the fuel will come out of the top of the tank = bad.

- fuel mixed with water is bad

.

let me say that the other responders are missing the fact that each fuel tank should have a drainage for excess fuel. and if you don't know that go back to the manual of your motorcycle.
if you have a motorcycle try this

spell some water on your tank cap while it is cloosed and watch carefully what happens next, you will see that there is a hose under your bike geting red of that whater to prevent it from over filling and going in your gas tank. all motorcycle has this mechanism.
mine is clogged and my question is how to get it open thats all.

for the person saying that the fuel goes only in the tank:

it happens sometimes that the fuel pumb will fail to stop and in that case the drain outside the tank opening will leak the excess fuel out and under the bike

all tanks have air and fuel drainage other wise you will have a disaster
this a safety issue

now i can stop the washing in the area around the gas tank cap and i can prevent over filling of gas put i can't prevent rain from going in the area surounding the fuel opining

again and for disbelievers try poring water on your tank cap while it is closed

You live and learn. Pistole, your Arabic is almost fluent :mfr_lol:  Do you think water/rain might run down the side of your tank? (on the outside!)

Thank you for your help

this is from the service manual of the GTR1400

247. 3-140 FUEL SYSTEM (DFI)Fuel TankFuel Tank and Cap Inspection• Visually inspect the gasket [A] on the tank cap for any damage. Replace the gasket if it is damaged.• Check to see if the water drain pipe and fuel breather pipe [C] (California Model) in the tank are not clogged. Check the tank cap breather also. If they are clogged, remove the tank and drain it, and then blow the breather free with compressed air.

I'm wondering how badly blocked the drain aperture is on your bikes fuel tank.

If you can see the drain hole perhaps it has become blocked with something and therefore wont allow excess fuel or water to safely drain away, perhaps its covered with paint , its difficult to advise without photo evidence

You should try and locate the drain hole and make sure its free from any obstructions

Good luck

I had a similar problem on my BMW K1200. If I parked it outside whilst touring and it rained, when I next opened the fuel cap there would be water all around the tank opening and this would then escape into the tank! Worried me endlessly for a while, I took the tank off to change the fuel filter and checked the drain tubes by blowing into them, all seemed OK.
I asked both a main dealer and independent specialist to look at it and they both said "well, the drain tubes are clear so it can't really be a problem", so I simply gave up worrying over it.
In five years of use, it never did cause any running problems!

P.S. In the case of my BMW, if overfilled with fuel it would drain under the bike.

maybe poke a wire or very thin rod down the drain tube from the tank top, maybe the pipe is just trapped from factory

or locate the drain tube at the bottom and do this in reverse or use compressed air to blast through

from your posts and knowledgeable retort  and ability to quote references from the manual you sound a very capable and resourceful biker, im sure you will figure it out without our help

I don't want to bring this issue again but i have to reply to your kind quote.
but sometimes what you might think of as humor might be an insult in different cultures
it is clearly that the comment was about the Arabic race.
I would not use my local culture humor with a person from a different culture who might misunderstand it or take it as an insult. :surrender:

I  think the problem is as simple as the drain tube being blocked, and my guess is that when the bike was built the tube has been trapped, so either you or the dealer need to trace the tube to find out where it is being pinched.  good luck.

I removed the tank today at home and the side fairings
traced the tubes and found the problem to be at the end of the tube
the factory pinched the tube with a clip and turned it back toward the engine . to protect it from being clogged before use. the bent area in the tube is almost damaged so i inserted a hard electrical plastic tube in the damaged area inside the tube
the dealer failed to remove it during the PDI.

i understand and apologies to all members for miss understanding .. There are four gtr1400 in the entire country two 2008 - one total damaged from an accident .. One 2010 (mine) .. And 2012 .. Dealer does not have the capabilities and it is shameful .. I fix my own depending on past experience (25years biker) .. And the rest depends on my simple knowledge  and perfect tools. Am from UAE DUBAI and working and living in Saudi Arabia Riyadh. GTR is kind of difficult technology when compared to other Japanese bikes. To tell you the truth, even if I was the only one with that beautiful motorcycle I will still own it.  She deserve all the sacrifice and headache. Viva GTR

Keeping the little b***ards out of anywhere is utterly impossible.
I went up into the loft to put away the Xmas tree and they followed.
They just climbed the ladder.
After about 2 hours up there exploring I finally got bored and enticed them down with treats.
Getting that pic was sheer luck.
They are a LOT slower on the way down.  :mfr_lol:
