Title: Kipass/shaft drive
Post by: skill on September 30, 2012, 06:07:36 PM
Having arrived home after a run i went to put the bike away and nowt, no ignition. After reading the forum and my manuel and tried all i can still nowt, looks like the black box has packed in. Ive a 2010 model from new with 12000mls on and JUST out of warrenty, has anyone any updates on this prob, how much is a new one and do they have to be mated to the fob etc etc.
Shaft drive, mine was noisey "grinding at engine end" i mentioned it at the service and was told "very unusual" !! the shop got in touch with kawasaki uk and they said its ok, too much grease, it was stripped, cleaned and regreased "so they said" mind its been quiet since. Since reading on the forum these two faults seem to be a bit more common than im led to believe, still a great bike though "lets see".    :surrender:

I know its stupid but have you checked the battery in the fob?

im not fully understanding your problem, when you say nowt , do  you mean everything on the bike is dead , ie flat battery/broken/loose terminal, or do you mean the engine turns over but wont start, describe the symptoms more and you will get some help , im sure

If it's the remote battery surely the ignition switch wouldn't even turn

Having been a GTR owner for a whole 24 hours this seems an unlikely suggestion, but I know when I got to a mate's I switched off, pfaffed around a bit and then tried to restart, remove ignition key, etc. and it wouldn't happen.

Walked away, came back a while later, and no problem.

Is the problem persisting?

My understanding from the dealer is that the fob is passive, and so no battery.

There is definatly a battery in the fob, i cant remember which exactly but i have a spare taped in my topbox.

even if your battery in the fob is toast, you can use your spare credit card type key/ back up key  and touch against the top part of the ignition barrel and it will allow you  to turn the cooker knob, we never leave home without it

I cant turn the ignition on, the cooker knob "i like that one" . My knobs never been out once, so it should be clean in the keyway.
I have a new battery in fob about 2 mths ago, shouldn`t need it as the emergency one doesn`t have one and i always carry it.
I have tried that one too as said in the manuel.
No turn of the cooker knob nowt works. Oh and ive checked the battery its reading 12.5v
I also have unplugged the kipass and blown on the connectors, a nice little blow job.

this is getting out of my knowledge area now, if you have un plugged your kipass , has it lost comms with the ecu? you may have a very small problem that you have turned into a big problem by messing.
The last time i heard symptoms like this it was just the main bike battery terminal that was dirty, but know you are talking of blown kipass you will need to get the bike back to a dealer

TBH, I'm also struggling to understand the problem clearly, some of your your comments suggest that you may be trying to start the bike incorrectly, and others that you have interferred with the electronics on the bike....in which case I would suggest that you get the bike back to a dealer.

There has been reports of loose/badly fitted battery terminals in the past, but this isn't a major problem with the GTR

Having had KIPASS issues in the past, requiring replacement on KIPASS ECU,I think you need to try a few things before assuming its knackered:

Try a fresh battery, when my dealer tested my new(!) spare it was barely giving any current at all. I had to call the RAC for recovery on one occasion, having left spare key card at home, he replaced my 2 week old fob battery and the bike leapt in to life

The bike should start, as others have said, with your spare key card even if the ECU or fob is knackered.

The KIPASS ECU has to be able to communicate with the bikes general ECU, sometimes a dealer reset will cure this. Cost around £40

Replacing the fob means replacing the KIPASS ECU and they are individually coded to each other, I believe this costs around £250.

The other issue KMUK raised was water ingress in to the fob,is your pocket as dry as you think?

Hope you get it sorted.

just because the main bike battery shows 12.5v , does not mean its good, a member on here , i think kevin was touring and his bike died on him, it turned out to be a dirty/loose connection on his battery , which he quickly sorted

I had the same thing happen to me whilst on holiday in Spain. Having seen this reported by others on 'another forum', the answer is to give the 'cooker knob' a good belt with the side of your fist.
I know this sounds daft but sometimes the make/break contacts in the ignition, dont. Giving it a good whack forces a reset. It sorted mine out, I then gave it a good spray with ACF50 and have had no problems since.

Hope this helps

I've had a similar problem, although the battery read 13v (optimiser). It turned out to be the frame end of the earth cabl job donee slightly loose. Cleaned and tightened, Job done!

Another addage, a mecanic said to use an airline on/down the barrel any small gremlins should be blown away. Ihave a compressor so thought why not. A hard bang, a good blow n lots of oil, can`t say more than that its done the job and do i feel better you bet.
