Title: Zumo 660
Post by: trousersnake01 on September 25, 2012, 11:29:57 PM
Just ordered mine, and just wondering how others are fitting it to the bike.

I want to play music on it and listen through my scala bluetooth headset.

Jus a thought though, if the garmin attaches to the scarla via bluetooth, how does the phone connect to the garmin then ? does the garmin have two bluetooth channels ?

And what do you think of them ?

I have a car tomtom in a ram mount box which has done me proud up until now.

I've Used a ram ball with an allen  bolt through it ( it is a genuine ram part designed to utilise a handlebar clamp bolt )   , I've fixed a captive nut under the headstock cap nut,  fixed in with liquid metal  , once the headstock cap is torqued up  ( 89ftlb)  ram ball screws into the captive nut  , and a 2" ram arm attached. Places the 660 nicely between the handlebars and doesn't affect the view.

Cable wise mine's attached to autocom, no need to take off the side panels, just take off the storage box  ( 09 ) loosen the right side panels, and there's enough space to lay the cables between the frame spar and the plastics.

Find a switched live to connect it to... when you switch the bike off it will ask if you want to continue on battery power or it will auto switch off ( I leave it on when refuelling etc. works nicely

Thats bull  :shit: Mogs  :mfr_lol:....

If you don't set up your Sat Nav correctly then the chances are it will take  you where you don't want to go...but set up correctly mine has NEVER taken me anywhere other than the correct/quickest/shortest route, on two wheels, four wheels or in the wagon.

Trousersnake, I'm not sure how well the 660 will pair with your Scala headset, there have been some issues with available volume levels, I dont usually wear ear plugs, but do wear a balaclava which is ok for me. On longer Motorway stretches I will use ear plugs as well, which makes listening to music from the 660 acceptable.

When uploading your music to your computer use Windows Media Player and ensure you choose the MP3, highest recording quality option and then download to your Garmin memory card

I have mounted my 660 with the Kawasaki Sat Nav mount, and its good for me with little or no reflection on the Device screen.

We've done around 23k miles using a 660 so far this year, 25k last year and similar distances since they came out and I can assure you Mogster is quite correct, you must have been lucky. It wasn't always so; they did a firmware update a few years ago that seems to have screwed up the routing.

We've got a couple of 660s, one of which we bought not long after they came out, and I do know exactly how to set them up. If it can't find a handy goat track it'll take you through the middle of the busy town rather than the bypass or off the road at the next junction, round the roundabout and back on again. I currently run a 660 and a 550 alongside each other and the 550 routing is much better (the 550 colour scheme is much more visible as well).

Having said that, I'll be replacing the 550 with the other 660 at some point in the near future as that'll provide better redundancy and the 660 has features I find useful. What I really want is a 660 with the routing and colours of the 550 but it doesn't exist unfortunately.

Respect to you Kevin, as you, of all people, really do know your stuff

I do still believe that too many people don't spend enough time in setting their device correctly though

I've had my 660 for a few months now and it navigated me to and around France and Belgium and back without a single hitch, it is a later model and therefore has the latest updates

My previous TomTom also never failed me, but didn't offer anf MP3 facility and a much larger screen which I fancied having.

- is it correct that the 660 has been superceded by the 690 665 ?

Ah but are you using 'Mapsource' or 'Basecamp' to plan your routes.....
If i ask the 660 to just take me somewhere...it's fine.... it's when i build complex routes that it all goes tits up..... It has a habit of deciding that the route i have chosen is to nadgery... and ooh look here's a shorter one...  :hammer:

Gotcha Mogs....I don't use either mapsource, Basecamp or other route planning sites, so TBH I wouldn't have any experience of potential issues of using those sites

I prefer to just use the device as a navigational aid usually using a postcode or an address

I bet George (Boomer) is reading this and having a right old laugh  :mfr_lol:

i dont have the 660, just used the 550 for a few years now, ive never used basecamp or other planning tools.
My experience with the 550 has been fantastic, i did a map upgrade earlier this year which caused some memory issues but garmin fixed that for me. The very few times the satnav has caused me to take a wrong turn, its usually when ive not read it properly or looked at all the info or when there is a new road layout, i can honestly say its never made a mistake,  Ive sometimes took a turn just before the one im supposed to, dont see the re calculation and then you believe its made a mistake, which my hasnt

TS .. I have the same set up as OC .. A K mount fitted at a service interval and a 660 for over a year now ... utterly brilliant bit of kit.

I think you'll find the 665 is a US-only unit. The only difference between it and the 660 AFAIK is its ability to pick up XM radio, weather and traffic. I'm considering one for our trip next year as I think the weather information will be useful.

Bryn, what cable do you use to connect it to your Autocom please?

You have the standard loom which fits into the space between the frame and the fairing panel.

Then there is (i think) a 4pin-4pin jack cable ( the same size as an MP3 player headphone jack .. its the one with the yellow end) and that plugs into the supplied loom, and the other end into the Autocom.

That allows me to listen to stereo music on the card in the zumo, listen to voice prompts on routes, and listen to her on the back saying she needs another coffee   :sleep1:

I tried the Starcom1 bluetooth kits with the 660 and phone. BT really isn't reliable, or at least it wasn't for me, so Starcom1 replaced them for me with a Digital wired system. BRILLIANT! Excellent stuff and I can safely say that wired is still, or at least for the moment, better than BT.

My 660 is fairly well behaved as far as following a predetermined route goes, but then again, i quite often take detours if I spot a better road / pub etc...

I'm dead chuffed, to be fair

I think that's one area where satnavs really come into their own. When we're not on timed runs we often do that but I don't think it's common usage. Seen an interesting road but don't know where it will take you? Who cares. If you've got the time follow your nose and the satnav will still get you to where you want to be.
