Title: Side stand failure
Post by: knightraider on September 13, 2012, 09:57:18 PM
Last week i parked my bike on an uphill with the camber going the way of my side stand. Put the bike on the side stand, walked away and turned round after about 10 seconds and saw the bike sliding backwards and then fell over onto nearside of the bike. Obviously the fairing and belly pan sustained damage along with my mirror and rear footrest breaking.

Repair to GTR is just over £900 and having to go through my insurance.

Just wondering if any of you guys are in the insurance business and could guve me a roough idea if it will affect my premium next year as i am on protected bonus, but this is my second claim in 10months of owning the GTR.

Typical isn't it, as i haven't claimed of my insurance for years but from minor mishaps from the 3rd party. But when i get something nice this happens.

Blimey Glen, Sorry to hear about this. You are having some rotten luck. Did you not leave the bike in gear?. As regards your claim, I think you are allowed 2 before it effects your no claims when you have protected bonus. Good luck with it.

Oh No....Thats a bugger Glen, the same happened to me with a ZZR 100 in the early 90s, people walked past and watched me struggle to lift the bike back up

I'm not sure how it will affect your NCB, hopefully not to much..

Hi Glen, sorry to hear your news.
You need to read the policy booklet which will tell you how many claims you are allowed before your NCB is reduced or even wiped out completely.
Some policies are set up to allow 1 claim and others work on a decreasing NCB as you make a claim such as calim 1, lose 10% NCB, claim 2 lose 20% NCB etc etc. Full details will be in the policy booklet.

sorry to hear this glen  you must be dam  I'm a bit confused here! so the bike rolled backwards against the backward force of the side stand when fully forward in the stop position :undecided: if so, it must have been a very steep hill? when I use the side stand I've always parked on slight incline "facing up hill" and in first gear. sorry if I've missed the obvious here..! but I'm courious  how the bike managed to roll backwards against the side stand force with the weight of the bike leaning which adds extra weight causing the side stand to dig into the surface..!

Yeah I was thinking that too Dave

Glen, you've headed your posting "side stand failure", did the side stand actually fail or (forgive me) did you incorrectly park the bike on an incline - out of gear ? thus allowing the bike to 'roll off' its side stand ?....sorry I'm now a bit (more) confused.

I park my bike (in first gear) uphill on a drive with a slight incline. I found that I need to roll the bike back with clutch out to ensure the gear is engaged with no "roll". Worse still the weight of the bike has "rolled" back even with 1st gear engaged - admittedly with me sat on it as well!

Really sorry to hear abot the damage - aforementioned drive took me off the Tiger thanks to loose gravel - amazing - 5 years and 53Kmiles without a scratch and that happens - Bugger!

- with the greatest respect , me thinks that its "rider failure" rather than sidestand failure

.

flippin eck pistole! give the guy a break - hes damaged his p&j and is feeling down enough. i know how he feels.  similar subject - anyone with one of those plastic sidestand pucks - free with mags usually. if its getting on then chuck it. on lawn the gtr sidestand went though it and luckily the ground held the bike up. im making up a metal one from now on.

regarding the no claims  bonus,we all know how insurance companies work, and as normal they only look after one person themselves! i think you will find that your no claims will still be protected, but they will load up your insurance policy for the next five years!!!in 2006 someone drove into my x type stoving in the front wing, this was in a supermarket car park, the police were called as they had drove off without stopping.cctv was checked but no footage of the incident was there.even though it was not my fault they still upped my insurance for the next 5 years.if i had of known before hand  i wouldn't have claimed.this is what they do if they cannot reclaim ther losses from a third party.

I wouldn't blame anyone for their side stand woe as I've done it myself. Long day riding, desperate for a break, pulled over whilst pointing downhill, mental note to put it in gear before I get off.

What did I do? Left it in neutral and the bike toppled over. No damage to the bike (R&G protectors) and it fell into a soft grass verge.

Hope you get it fixed soon.
