Title: RIP Charlie
Post by: Lonewolf on August 30, 2012, 09:21:41 PM
Some of you, perhaps even many of you may find this post pathetic, however to me and my wife this is a way of showing our love and respect to a dear friend who reached the end of his life this afternoon.
This young lad had been a part of our lives for almost ten years after we rescued him at the age of approximately three from a local dog rescue centre. Thirteen years old almost and regrettably he just gave up on life in the last few days leaving us with no option other than to make that one way trip to the vets to end his pain.

Rest in Peace Charlie, you'll always have a place in our hearts.

Nothing pathetic about it mate. Its heartbreaking to lose a pet thats been part of your life for so long.
Take comfort in the knowledge that you gave him a good life and did the right thing when it mattered.

so sorry for your loss, RIP charlie.

Last year myself and family took the loss of our nine year old house rabbit real bad, i took him to the vet for his final curtain call, a dog must be 10 times worse than this

Yes sorry to hear your sad news Steve, I dont care what anyone says you would not be more upset if one one of your kids died. It's really upsetting when some thing thats been part of your lives for so long is suddenly gone. BUT  I'm sure you have lots of fantastic memories, not to mention photos of the little fella.

Sorry to hear about the loss of Charlie Steve, I had to make the same decision not too long ago with my Springer Mouse, it was the only decision to take in the end

My Labrador Kite missed Mouse for a while but soon got back to her normal crazy self.

As always Mecki your opinion is only your opinion, those who love their pets will beg to differ and should not be critised for it

So sorry for your loss Steve. I know just how you feel having done the same journey to the vets last Tuesday. The pain will linger but the happy times & photo's will allways remain.

Sorry to hear about your loss Steve.
I agree, pets are very close to our hearts and when we lose one, we feel a sense of loss.

There have been so many over the years.
Mine were all feline (I'm not a dog person, but am an animal person).

We lost my Pippins (blue burmese) when I was 14 and he was 8.
We left him in the care of a neighbour who turned out to be an alcoholic.
When we came back from a disastrous holiday (caravan caught fire) he hadn't been seen for several days.
We never saw him again. I pray that someone took him home and loved him but I still miss him.
We walked the Quantocks and the forests near Frillesas in Sweden together for a great many years.

The family replaced him with Albert (brown burmese) and he was a great cat and we had some fun but he was a family cat and spread his affections around.

When Ella moved in she brought the 2 girls (Puspus & Panda, mother and daughter, tortoiseshell moggies).
Both lived to 21 but they were Ellas cats and merely tolerated me.

We now have Monty (chocolate burmese) and Bozo (lilac burmese) and Bozo is definitely my cat.
I wish I had the time and space to take him on long wandering walks through the countryside.

Mecki, in some respects you are right but you are also bang out of order.
Have some sympathy/empathy for  :censored: sake!

Steve, if it's any comfort you do move on, and you never forget them.

Mecki, if you have children then maybe you don't invest as much in your pets as you do if you don't have kids.
I can't tell you as I don't have kids so have no way of comparing.
I do have cats and to my partner and I they are our "kids".
If someone deliberately harmed either of them I would feel quite justified in retaliating in full, much as someone would do if their kids were harmed.

I will never have to bury one of my children as I don't have any,... but I have buried my best friend (suicide).
I dread the day I will have to bury one of my parents or sisters.

As for comparing your pain with my pain, that's just a waste of time.

We just had this outburst of lynch-mob mentality here because some gutter journalist accused a biker to have deliberately killed a dog.
Going so far that in the eyes of some he still deserves to be tortured and killed even if it was not a deliberate act of cruelty at all.
After all - the dog is dead and that cries for punishment!

As usual Mecki your posts demonstate that you have your opinion (to which you are fully entitled ) and that no one else is permitted theirs.

If you find the posts on this forum so obliquely opposed to your opinions then why do you keep posting, except perhaps to make a noise from behind your keyboard, in the fond hope that others will 'take your bait'

Its simple, if you are so unimpressed with others and their opinions, on here then you can excercise your prerogative and go elsewhere.

QED

I loved all the pets I ever had but I love my children much more.
After all they are my own flesh and blood and not just a substitute.
When you get a pet you must know it will most likely die before you do.
That is not an opinion that is a fact.
When you have a child you expect to outlive it.
That too is not an opinion - that is a fact too.

Do you have children? Did you ever loose a child?
I lost a brother when I was 16 and that hurt a lot more than any dog I ever took to the vet because I thought it would be cruel not to.
But my mother nearly went mad and my father changed a lot too.
Even when my first wife left me and broke up our family that hurt and broke my heart because I didn't expect it.
I wouldn't even want to imagine how I would feel if one of my sons or even my grandson would suddenly die.
I hope I will outlive my children and grandchildren as we are supposed to, because I don't want to experience that kind of pain.

So if you still think loosing a dog hurts as much as loosing a child then my advice is, 'NEVER GET A DOG!'

As i said before that is YOUR opinion, others may feel different. It is not for you to judge how much emotion we can feel for our pets as opposed to our flesh and blood.

I dont want to get pedantic but I dont understand the statement

"I hope I will outlive my children and grandchildren as we are supposed to, because I don't want to experience that kind of pain"

I assume it is just an error that needs editing to make sense

losing a child can't be compaired to losing a pet :nono: and I think geoff could have rephase his reply better. but on the "other hand" I understand that couples who are not blessed with children consider pets to be their children so become very attached. we got our spaniel as a family pet for our 2 daughters and as soon as the breeder would allow the pup to leave his mother we brought him home. he was part of our family for 15 years and when he got diagnosed with bowl cancer we at to have him put down. my 2 daughters and my wife where totally distraught and even now when they see holiday pictures of our dog it's   and more  I was the one who took him to be put down and I stayed with him while the vet injected him and he then whimpered then I watched him fall asleep. I can honestly state with out a shadow of a doubt, it was the most unpleasant experience I've ever had the misfortune to experience and never ever want to experience that feeling ever again defo  :nono: so we will not be getting another dog  however..  I knew after the initial shock I would come to terms with it. I can't even pretend to imagine and "please hope to god" I never do.. what it would be like to lose a child. I know for sure, I would not want to even exist anymore :nono:

Lone, very sad mate, sorry to hear that.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Steve .....
Very sorry to read this bad news ... Our Molly is 9 today and I can't imagine the grief that will come to me if and when I make the decision you have been forced into in some future years.
Thinking of you and Tracey.

It seems we bikers are big really just big softies at heart.  :mfr_lol:

Many thanks again for all the kind words. Keep safe, Steve & Tracey

Well, five months on and Mac, (our other Springer) has been looking lost and missing Charlie so we have recently been looking for a new friend for him. We've found the ideal companion for him, a 7 year old Cocker Spaniel, who as you will see from the photos needs to lose a bit of weight. He's 10kg overweight but it'll come off in time. Plenty of exercise and a controlled diet and hopefully in six months approx he'll be down to his ideal weight.

We've had him clipped to see what we were working with and he's not too bad. He's lost a kilo already so we're on the right track. He didn't look too chuffed though at getting clipped in January!  :mfr_lol:
