Just thought I would try it and be a devil ... on the way home with only a bar left on the fuel gauge I passed several pit stops until I finally got the flashing "Low Fuel" come up on the display .... a few miles later I was nearly home and put in £24.16 .. just under 18 litres ... I usually fill up with about £20.
So with a 22 Litre tank that would mean I actually have about 4 litres left which in turn would get me, if I was careful a good few miles ... not really "Low" me thinks .... I wonder, how far after the flashing starts have you managed or dared to go ??
The low fuel warning is the start of the "reserve" tank and from past experience that is about 35-40 miles. There have been couple of occassions when I have filled up with 21.5 litres '' - bit of a clsoe call
Kind regards
Steve
In France last year our planned fuel stops were closed, got 42 miles on 'Fuel Low', put 22.2litres in  not played that game again :mfr_lol:

Ah yes... never play 'Pertol Roulette' in France... the sat nav don't half tell some whoppers!
I've been lucky that since I got the bike in March of this year I haven't yet had to fill it up. I ride so slowly that I'm still showing half a tank! If you dont believe me just ask Asif! :mfr_lol:
Ive also had a close call in France...
Was heading for my ferry in Calais when my dash started to flash LOW FUEL and it was a choice of stop for petrol and miss the sailing or go for it to catch the ferry :mfr_lol:
Well the ferry was my choice... I was a good 40 miles from the port and I was talking to baby all the way, asking her to get me there... Well I did make it...
Went to Tesco in Dover and filled up with 21.6 Ltrs...
Never will I let it get that low again... :mfr_lol:
My warning message always comes on with 4l of fuel left in the tank.
That will get me at least 40-50 miles depending on riding style (Avg 51 mpg).
And since I normally carry a full 5l petrol can with me whenever I'm on tour that will always get me to an open petrol station. :biker3:
One of the 'Mercan Concours 14 riders fitted a petrol can to the luggage rack and went to see how far he could go.
Ran it until the motor quit.
Apparently it gets quite "lumpy" around 50 miles into reserve and then goes downhill quite fast.
He managed 53 miles before it quit completely.
My best is filled with 21.9 litres.
I once pushed a Z1300 for 2 miles. NEVER again!!!
I did a similar test with my Vstrom to see if I could do a round trip commute without refilling.
Fuel injection does not give much warning [ spluttering etc] it just cut out.
I di get home one night, next day started the bike on the side stand, stood it up and the engine cut out due to lack of fuel !
A good mod for the bike if on a really long trip is to have a tank bag style reserve tank... Have it linked in to the pipe and just open a tap when you need to use it.. :)
Do you think this would be a bit OTT? :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
Spare fuel cans!...seriously guys, isn't a 200 mile plus tank range enough for ya... ..... I mean it's a rare few that tour anywhere where you aren't more than 30miles or so from a petrol station....
Really, not filling up when you can is just being fooking idle and if you run outta petrol 'Tough'... besides there's a sodding fuel warning icon the size of Wales that comes up on the dash ! :mfr_lol:
You'll be wanting a tanker and support crew next... Just like Ewan and Charlie .... and If I can tour with a bike that has a 100 mile tank range and no fuel guage I expect you lot to stop moaning ...
You'll be putting it on a trailer next and towing the damn Bike round Europe...... :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
Took my near on 200 mile range Z1100 to Germany last month.
One of our group had a small tank Z1R, he was getting worried if he had to ride more than 90 - 100 miles before refuelling.

Or a camelbak to save wasting luggage space ?

Well, I regularly ride from Rotterdam to the South of France and with the can I manage to get to Luxemburg without having to buy fuel in Holland or Belgium.
The difference in price is significant (~25p per litre)
And on more than one occasion my extra fuel has come handy for mates who ran out of fuel in the middle of nowhere.
Thank you everyone for your stories ..... now at least I know there are a good few miles left if it happens out in the real world !
Slipstreaming lorries on a motorway gets you a few more miles when your dash is flashing .... :smartass:
