Title: Exhaust paint
Post by: BigAlan on August 19, 2012, 09:24:56 PM
So there was I with the exhaust off and those two silver bits all rubbed down ready to paint in Halfrauds Mettallic black paint, after the first dusting it was plain to see,it was more grey than black so there going back tomorrow, but cani use normal black spray paint on the exhaust rather than heat resistant stuff? Surely it can't get that hot.

Go for the HT stuff every time. I painted the bash plate on my tiger with halfords rubbish lasted about a week before flaking. It won't get as hot as the K muffler. There is a really good satin black rated up to 450 deg C. I used that in the end. Can't remember the brand - ill get back to you when it's clicked.

Alan, the pipe has every chance of getting much hotter than you might think

I use this on one of my Triples expansion chambers, its good and easy to apply, there may be different finishes available, you'll have to check

Good luck, and don't forgtet to post pics when the jobs done

Why not just have them powder coated, is that not more durable as its baked in an oven after application?

Can you powder coat the two plastic bits, ie. the end cap and the other bit forward, Actually, are they plastic?

I have access to a powder coater in the Village but am not sure about these two bits.

i in the past i used PJ1 (BLACK GLOSS) on an xjr1300 engine, cooling fin's,gave a very good finish,i would think the SATIN BLACK would look nice on the standard exhaust (silver)bit's.

The 2 end caps are ally
Mine are powder coated and have started to bubble after 3 years or about 12000 miles

Our local Powder coater wont touch the exhaust, the other bits no prob but not the exhaust, so i shall simply paint them.

You only have 6 Ps. I learnt it with 7 Ps. piss poor preparation provides piss poor performance, but it means the same. :mfr_lol:

here's a quick one for you ,have you ever thought of getting the silver sections on you exhaust chrome plated.i think it would look much better and set the bike off better than black paint.i am considering this for my zzr as it has two rather huge spud launchers on it with the two silver sections which come off easily .
