Title: Iceland 2012
Post by: Kevin on August 13, 2012, 11:17:33 PM
It's taken quite a while to sort out the photos from this trip, all 3200 of them. There are still a couple of minor formatting glitches in the web pages and probably too many photos in the albums. We're busy for the next few weekends and I don't think they're major issues so here's our Iceland report (http://www.thewellers.net/trips/Iceland/FaroeIslands.htm).

Magnificent write up and photos once again Kevin, thank you to you and your wife for sharing.

I was fortunate enough to be working in Reykjavik for 6 months back in the early 00's, and your photos brought back some lovely memories. I loved the perpetual daylight of the summer months, and the landscape is simply stunning - as you captured so well in your photos.

A couple of questions if I may:
- Is it still monumentally expensive to eat and drink out there? I remember often having to pay £10 for a beer, and £70 for an average meal back when I was there.
- What camera do you use to capture the shots whilst riding? Same camera as the stills, or are you getting that quality from a helmet mounted GoPro or similar?

It was a lot cheaper than we were expecting Martin (petrol was cheaper than the UK) and I don't remember anything being particularly expensive. Since their financial crisis the Icelandic Krónur has more than halved against sterling which is what made the difference.

We have a couple of Panasonic DMC-FT2 (http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/Products/DMC-FT2/Overview/3379340/index.html) cameras and they are generally all we take with us. Lyn takes all the mobile shots from the back with one of those. We knew the scenery would be pretty special in Iceland so we also took a Canon EOS-505D with a selection of lenses on this trip. That's what was sitting in the black dry-bag on the top box in some of the shots. I've thought several times about a bike-mounted video camera but it takes so long to sort out all the stills we take the thought of having to deal with a load of video as well makes me shudder so I've resisted the temptation (although we have shot a small amount of video using one of the Panasonics).

Wow. Spectacular isn't the word. I though the only scenic items in Iceland were the blondes. Looks like I was mistaken!

Really stunning pictures and a great writeup.

You'd have been disappointed with that aspect of Icelandic wildlife Asif.

Steve, some years ago I bought a picture of a whale's fluke (http://www.talbotcollection.com/pages/whlitho_cart.htm) taken by Bob Talbot. It's a stunning picture IMO. I could never hope to compete with it but I've always wanted to have the opportunity to take something similar. I was quite pleased with the results and that whale-watching trip was excellent; we were very lucky.

Roger, there are pictures of Whales on page 2 of the write-up...

We're off to Ireland over the weekend which will probably be our last trip of the year :(. The scenery won't be as stunning but we like Ireland. Of course we'll need a working bike to do so - the FJR has a persistently flat rear despite having a new tyre fitted, the GSA (which we were planning to take) broke down yesterday and has just been taken to the dealer, the FJ has some sort of interlock issue preventing it from starting...we should have kept the GTR!

Kevin which part of Ireland are you visiting, North, South or both ?

Both. We're landing at Larne on Sunday, attempting a Circuit of Ireland (http://www.ibaireland.org/Circuit_of_Ireland.php) on Monday which should settle us in nicely then wandering until we catch a ferry from Dublin later in the week.

(I think the GSA breakdown was self-inflicted BTW. A quick-release connector had come off the fuel pump. That connector is very close to where I pulled a cable through for an additional accessory socket last week so I suspect I dislodged it. We were lucky it lasted long enough to get to Newquay and halfway back.)

Have a great time, Northern Ireland is a place I know extremely well (I used to be married to Larne lass, and very nearly went to live there), I have still got many close friends in various parts of N.I, its a beautiful country.

I know its like teaching Granny to suck eggs, but whatever you do don't miss the Antrim coast road and its many places of interest ~ Carikke-a-Rede rope Bridge, Giants Causeway plus many others if you haven't visited before they are an absolute 'must do'

I'm already looking forward to your report and pictures

We already had the Giant's Causeway and Dunluce and Carrickfergus Castles on the itinerary but I'd forgotten about that rope bridge, thanks for the reminder.

We've been to Ireland a few times but always when we're on a rally or going diving, this will be our first 'flower-sniffing' ride there. Lyn bought an 'essentials' guide to Ireland yesterday which we'll be reading intently over the next few days.
