Just been cleaning the calipers on the bike and have hit a problem with the rear carrier that the caliper itself fastens to. On tightening one of the bolts it felt like the thread had stripped, but when I took the bolt back out and it looked like the thread had an insert (Helicoil) that had come out with the bolt. My point is, is there an insert in the carrier as standard or has it been put there by someone that has been doing a job on the bike and stripped the thread.
Stripped the thread is my bet. The torque on those isn't much and it's easy to over tighten
I have just had my rear wheel out and when putting it all back together I copper slipped all the bolts and there was no sign of a helicoil at all.
Alan
helicoil has been put in. They are a very very good fix and are stronger than the original fix , i used them to fix fairing points on my zzr. they are a steel insert rather than the aluminium one you had, get yourself a new set and re insert , it will be fine

Thanks Viper, where will I get the said helicoils from, and how will I know what size to go for?.I have a great knack of doing my servicing, but when things go wrong I turn into a numpty .

you need to measure the bolt to know what size kit to get , so if its a m8 bolt you will need a 8mm coil set. the process is to drill a larger hole than what the bolt needs, tap a thread into that hole ( everything you need is in the kit ) and then insert a new helicoil thread into that tapped ( threaded ) hole, the insert looks just like a spring

100 milesaway,
there are two types of thread, coarse and fine, coarse will be M8x1.25, fine will be M8x1.0.
Worth checking what the thread on the bolt is before buying/drilling,cocking up :whistling:
Thanks everybody, I am now on the case.
