Title: Possible recall of bikes
Post by: BigAlan on July 30, 2012, 10:27:39 PM
Just saw this posted on the USA Concours site, it may affect us we Can either wait and see or put your VIN into the Kawasaki site indicated below.

Report Date :
July 27, 2012 at 08:10 AM
NHTSA Campaign ID number :  12V343000

Vehicle Make / Model:  KAWASAKI / CONCOURS 14
Model Year(s): 2008-2012
Manufacturer: KAWASAKI MOTORS CORP., U.S.A.
Mfr's Report Date: JUL 18, 2012
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 12V343000

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
Potential Number of Units Affected: 13,289

Summary:
Kawasaki is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 Concours 14 (ZG1400 A/B/C/D) motorcycles. Due to a gap between the brake pedal and guard, small
stone or debris can become trapped, creating a brake drag. This can cause the rear brake to overheat, leading to rear brake damage and lock-up or
failure of the rear brakes. The front brakes may also be affected on ZG1400C models.

Consequence:
If the brakes lock up or fail, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Remedy:
Kawasaki will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear master cylinder rod end and remove the brake guard (if installed), free of charge.
The safety recall is expected to begin on, or about, July 30, 2012. Owners may contact Kawasaki at 1-866-802-9381.

Notes:
Customers may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153); or go to
http://www.safercar.gov.

I had this Rear brake pedal mod done on my old 2009 model but had to contact the dealer myself. It involved fitting a small steel bracket as a guard against stones getting lodged.

Other Recalls were faulty lock / brackets on the Panniers on the pre 2010 models and the rear plastic rack was prone to splitting too on pre 2010 models

just for info.

I thought these would have been sorted on the 2010 model but maybe worth a look.

I'd be more worried about the rear pre-load adjuster which some of us are reporting as being seized. I checked mine before i bought it and it was fine - 4 weeks ago. On sunday I went to adjust it to make it a little softer and had a real job turning it - defo stiffer. I had to remove the rear pillion mount bracket to get a good purchase. I had an ohlins p/l adjuster on the R1 and dont remember it being that stiff.
By their nature they are "stiff" but if they are being replaced then is this an issue ? My bikes just out of 2 yr warranty so am at the will of Kwakas "goodwill" dept.

Most probably be flamed for this but....

I take mine off about once a year and use WD40 turning it about 8 clicks in and out.

Does the job for me....

Took mine off straight after getting it home from the shop, held it with black adjuster downwards and squirted plenty of ACF50 into it and gave it plenty of clicks in each direction. Will probably repeat every 3 months to be safe. Maybe OCD but prevention better than cure and all that

Got a shock sock and hugger too.

OOOOH I do love my new beastie :mfr_lol:

might go and stroke it and tuck it in before bed

I did squirt wd40 with unit inverted.  This helped but will do the same next weekend. The clicks worry me. Should the preload adjuster "click".  I thought that was the rebound adjustment.

No the preload adjuster does click. 28 clicks in full on the 2010 + models.

FYI Dont use WD 40 on anything with rubber in it as it rots rubber and yes I found out the hard way ( Fork seals ) not sue about ACF50 it may be ok as again it was designed for the USAF / USNavy planes , I am in the lucky position of owning a 2012 bike and the preload adjuster turns with no probs with an audible click each full turn wind it in fully home and fully out every now and again ( Used to do the same on the scopes ), as for stones I dont see how this should be an issue ( Its in the states and consequently danger of a law suite ) I have had small stones or grit in the calipers before ( Bikes and Cars ) if you saw how much grit they spread on the roads round here during the winter you would understand , I am more worried about some of the neeps driving cars round here to be honest .

When you see the likes of Nick Sanders on an R1 round the world and where he takes it ..................blooming nutcase , I wouldnt have taken the motocross bike some of these places , the bike appeared to survive ok considering .

Just my outlook on it , quite willing to accept I may be wrong folks............ :surrender:

Seems like I will have a problem then as the adjuster turns but is very stiff - even after WD40 treatment. I dont know whether it will loosen enough to discern the "clicks" though. Bit of a problem as I commute solo but always stiffen up when I do pillion. Anyone know how much a PL adjuster is if "K" dont honour a claim? Bike has done 6300 miles?
Title: Re: Possible recall of bikes
Post by: ohlinsr1 on August 01, 2012, 07:30:04 PM
I would think that since its a common problem then Kawasaki would be ok , needs to go through the dealer though most are very good but some are not , I have had goodwill claims for other bikes due to the dealer pushing it for me , no harm in asking , I think the adjuster is compressing Gas  or oil to put pressure on the spring  so therefore resivoir may be under pressure , if its oil the cant understand them all seizing as the guts of it are in oil , it may be dirt getting into the nut in which case WD40 or any other sprays may be usless , I have been playing about with the settings on mine and have now got it to where it appears compliant enough without being too soft ( I weigh 13 stone )I have been spoiled though as the R1 runs Ohlins back and KTech forks..... crazy amount of money but worth every penny , the shock can be rebuilt apparently or Nitron do one for £380 not hydraulic preload or  £150 extra gets you one , built to your spec , trouble is once you do the back the front feels all wrong ..............

The pre-load on my 60 reg GTR has now ceased up so will need to visit my local dealer. Deffo seems to be a common problem. maybe the big K will issue a recall if enough problems are reported.
I was thinking about just putting a big pair of mole grips on a twisting the adjuster but thought better of it. Just being impatient.

ohlinsR1: Thanks for the advice. As you can tell from my profile picture my R1 was pretyy heavily "harissed" and "ohlinned".The rear shock went soft at about 28K so the ohlins went on and what a difference! Trouble was the front end needed similar and couldnt quite stretch to road and track forks so went for progressive fork springs. My mediocre ability couldnt tell the difference though. I spent £50 with Peak Performance in Exeter and got it set up properly. Regarding the GTR. I'll persevere with AC50 /WD40 and if I dont revitalise the clicks will contact Bournemouth Kawasaki. I reckon theyll do well from me in the long term. If this is an issue I'll and it to the "common faults" thread.

Incidentally a Remus Hexacone is on e-bay at present - if it was the titanium one I'd be interested but its out there for those that are.

At the very real risk of being called a smart arse , I have cut a section of pushbike inner tube about 3 inches long and fitted it over the hyd adjuster to stop water and dirt getting in , a but of insulating tape round the bottom of the plastic nut was the first attempt , looking at a Nitron with remote Hyd preload for it but will see how this works first.

Good news. Perseverance paid off. Removed the adjuster from frame. Inverted it and squirted wd40 around the black plastic nut. Then wait an hour and repeat. Then refit to frame and leave overnight. This morning it's a lot easier and I'm discovering clicks again. I did ring Kawasaki yesterday and they were pretty good. As they are aware of the issue they would -subject to dealer inspection replace the shock at a discounted price. Can't say whether that would be labour free though. Looks like I won't be needing it hopefully. I'll try an adjuster on a new bike to compare the force needed and if the same consider it sorted. I could always go for an ohlins replacement on eBay- a snip at £1018.00!!!!!!!!

Tommytool, is your bike still under warranty? If it is there will be absolutely no problem with an exchange under warranty. I had mine done a few weeks ago under warranty. Outside warranty the complete unit is £600.
Even the new unit is stiff but I gather this is intentional.

The 2year warranty expired on June 16th I believe. I did try to get previous owner to get the  additional 2years sorted but it was too late before I bought. No problem with adjuster now. The WD40 worked a treat. Wake up call for us all to check them frequently. Am half way through installing the Zumo and Autocom. Tool tray sorted, power to the rear accessory wires done. Just need to route cabling to the front and return PTT switch wiring to the rear. Then it's screen and exhaust.

Cheers for the advice.

Hi Debs.
Its really easy - it just needs time for the WD40 to permeate. I'm using this as an exercise how to add pics. Im rubbish at it but here goes.

1. Undo the 2x 6mm allen bolts securing the LH pillion bracket and remove.

2 Undo the 2x 5mm allen bolts securing the adjuster. Let the adjuster hang down inverted - i supported as it needs to stay inverted overnight.

3. Squirt WD40 into the gap between black adjuster and body - leave 2 hours to allow it to pool on the inside of the assembly. Then rebolt to the frame and leave overnight. Amazingly I returned the next morning and the adjuster gradually got its mojo back!

Thats all there is to it!

Just a couple of extra pics showing my autocom wiring (uber-tidy) and the point on LH mid fairing I cant get detached.

Wiring the autocom power to the rear accessory point behind the ECU.
I will get the pictures reduced in size in future - just dont know how at present!

thanks for posting that , didnt know it was that easy to lube the adjuster, btw, if you want your pics to be even slicker get the sizing down to about 800 x 600 which is the best size for forums, you are currently sized at 1000 x 800

thanks

Not exactly, you can chat to the pillion sure but when I go out on trips with mates we all have the radio system attached to it so we can talk rider to rider, handy when you have a slow rider who gets caught at traffic lights etc.

We did play eye spy once in France while moving at a fair old rate.

At last! Something I know about!  Autocom systems have been around for ages and probably are the most popular and cost effective systems around.** A few years ago some investment was put in to upgrade the series and include wireless systems as well. In their simplest form they are a rider to pillion system but dependant on the unit you can add GPS Satnav, phone, MP3 player and bike to bike radio plus maybe camera audio on the auxiliary input.  I had both 5 and 7 pin types but now have the upgraded Super Pro Automatic (super pro AVI previously).  They are excellent units but do need a bit of savvy to get the best from them regarding set up, noise suppression and the like. I linked my iPhone, kenwood radio and 2x sat navs to it on my "biggie" ( solo trip to morocco) and I thoroughly recommend them. Checkout Chainspeed website they are very helpful.
Apologies to Starcom, Sonic, Cardo Scala and inter phone owners - just my humble opinion!

I've never had any probs with my Starcom Digital which now has the latest BTM02 Bluetooth (dongle) and it pairs to the Zumo 660 perfectly, plus it plays Mp3 music and provides excellent rider to pillion comms (hard wire) it does all this very well and with no fuss. It will enable mobilke phone comms too but I prefer to be without a mobile phone whilst riding .

A couple of years ago we used a cardo scala which was crap, I believe they have improved somewhat since those early days

I have a mate (yes I do) who was involved with Motorola at one point.  They were looking to partnering with Starcom but didn't due to contratual issues.  He was all for Starcom when the deal was ongoing.  When it fell through (about same time as Autocom were taken over) he said that the Autocom was the better system and wouldn't touch Starcom - it was only through company loyalty!

I think I know that mate of yours, and if we are talking about the same chap he's a very helpful and knowledgable man, and yes, he was very much in favour of Starcom ..He's recently left Tecstar hasn't he...where is he know Chris ?

I think I'm right in saying that Autocom and Starcom are now basically the same company.

Great, it seems I have a choice of East London Kawasaki (Ilford) or Colchester Kawasaki.
Both are 40 mins ride from home so what the hell am I going to do while I wait for them to do it?
And no, I don't fancy a stroll around Colchester/Ilford.
Only K dealer in Essex now is Colchester.

Oh well, I guess it will just have to wait.

Yep, just called Kawasaki UK and they have confirmed that my bike is one of the affected bikes.
Same problem from what I gather as what was evident on the older models, possibility of a stone or other road debris getting into the area between plate and brake pedal increasing the risk of the brake locking on or overheating. You'd have thought this mod would have been addressed on the newer models rather than repeating it.
Kawasaki state it's a 20 minute job under warranty. Letter is on it's way to me apparantly.

Kawasaki may still replace as a goodwill gesture for known issues. I had a known issue with the downpipes on my Versys and had them replaced for free 6 months out of warranty. You should get in touch with your local dealer if you think there's a problem with the pre-load. It's definitely a known problem!

Ive not had a letter.. I just contacted them and was confirmed about the problem.. I am now the 5th who have contacted our dealer about this and will now wait for them to ring when to arrange a time to go in.

mmmm, that's not good really, as any franchised dealer is legally obliged to make contact with customers whose bikes/car is affected by a recall, especially so if its safety related, as it is a DOT requirement.

Well done you for bringing it to our attention

Yeah, top girl debs! This forum is great for spreading the news, good or bad. I would have veered away from buying private without  the prior knowledge of what to look for. Mind you the bikes a beauty !

I used the contact number supplied, but is out of action. Rang Kawasaki Uk on 01628856750 customer services. They confirmed the recall and stated letters will be arriving in the next couple of weeks if your GTR is to be recalled. They confirmed over the phone that my GTR is due for recall. So rather waiting for the letter to arrive, i contacted the main dealers in my area to confirm with them the above. They are now ordering the part and will contact me when arrived to book in for the refit.

Hope that  this will help you to get the ball rolling rather than waiting for the letter to arrive.

Absolutely right   :agree:....he should/must know what the recall is and what parts are required.  Thats the point of the excercise.

ahh yes the dealer will need to see the letter(s) in order to update his recall list, but he should know which part to order in fact I would expect the part to have been pre-ordered and in stock ready to fit

Just rang mine. He wanted the VIN/HULL/ID. NO and said will ring you back in 24hours and get a suitable date for you to bring it in and we will do it straight away whilst you wait. Quite impressed.

Obviously pays to be a valued customer.
My dealer just confirmed my registration and mobile number when I rang and they'll ring me when the kit arrives.  :sweet:
My back brake has actually been behaving strangely. Sometimes I only need to touch it and it kicks in very hard while most of the time I have to push it a lot further down before it works and it is a lot 'softer' too.
So maybe mine is actually a case why they recalled the bikes.

got my letter, (08 plate) phoned seastar superbikes in Norfolk  he know about the recall only needed my name, had all my details on the system vin etc going in Monday to do job about 15  mins as i understand this is a different problem to the last recall which by the way also showed up on his system as being already dealt with.

I'm sure there was a recall on the rear brake cylinder before which involved fitting a plate to stop small stones etc getting jammed up. Now they are recalling to remove said plate and modify the cylinder.

I think there might be a need for some clarification regarding this recall

Firstly, closer inspection of the three recall letters that I received demonstrates that they in fact reffered to the three different GTRs that I've had, also the recall to rectify the grit ingress on rear brakes WAS actually carried out on the 2010 model. and therefore should NOt be applicable to the latest 2011 model

Secondly if you read the recall communication from Kawasaki it says

"Our records show that you are the owner of the Kawasaki product detailed above. Kawasaki has determined that a potential safety problem exists on your machine and has initiated a safety recall to repair it

On eligible units of 1400GTR and 1400GTR ABS models small stones or other road debris can become trapped between the rear pedal and guard and prevent the pedal from fully releasing, This can cause overheating potentially leading to rear brake damage and lock up or failure of the rear brake. On 1400GTR ABS models with K-ACT the front brake may also be affected becasuse it is linked with the rear brake operation.

The repair consists of replacing the rear brake master cylinder rod end and removing the guard. This will take approximately 20 minutes to complete."

The remainder of the communiction confirms that the work will be f.o.c

NOW, in the past the recall consisted of fitting some kind of shield to prevent stone/debris ingress, whereas this recall is in connection with the rear brake operational/master cylinder rod, which is perhaps why some GTR users have questioned the rear brake operation and indeed commented that after the recall was effected that improvement was felt.

Personally I initially found the recall letter somewhat confusing but now it seems to be much clearer.....In fact Debs brought this very subject to light in a previous post.

Having spoken to my mate at Autorama he has confirmed that there is only one recall and that is in connection with replacing the master cylinder rod, and my interpretation of that is that this should not be confused with a previous recall regarding dirt ingress behind the rear brake lever.

I hope that this helps...OH BTW dealers can obtain the relevant parts very easily as they are available from Kawasaki UK and there is only one recall inplace at the moment relating to the GTR

Top man Rusty

I was just thinking (it doesn't happen much) that my rear brake is not as good as the rear brake was on my previous GTRs, I thought "its probably me, and my wonky right foot", but dya know it may just be that some improvement to rear brake operation and feel could result from this modification/recall

Time will tell...mines being done next Monday at Autorama, I'll get her serviced at the same time as well
