Title: split front mudguard pics!
Post by: 2kwacks on July 21, 2012, 04:16:21 PM
pick up my "half price" new genuine front mudguard this morning and just fitted it  but just thought I would show you the crack/split on the original mudguard. As you know kawasaki would not except this as warranty. I did have a good go at them, but they weren't budging on this :nono: anyway after I bent their ears on the phone and with a few emails, they said they have not had any reports of mudguards spliting. but agreed if the front wheel had never been removed, and there was no apparent damaged that could have caused the split and taking into consideration the bike is now19 months old, and due to theses points and as a gesture of good will and a thankyou for recently buying the zx6r we will give you 50% discount on new price. so thought! £70.00 instead of £147.58 + vat  then I don't need to gaffer tape the underneath to strenghten the cracked one! so may as well take advantage of the offer  here's a pic of the front and back of the guard, the split is just off dead centre and approx 2 inchs long. there is no joining seam at rear so these's mudguards are moulded as one piece. there is two parallel lines that run from the rear "underneath" of the gaurd starting from the rear, then just before the split ends both lines branch off to either front end. these's lines look like they where made from the moulding temp plate, which look like they are just characteristic of that particular moulding tool. if anyone eles as had a similar split in the front mudguard and are at a loss on how the hell it happened, then contact kawasaki customer services and put it on record. if one dose split again kawasaki may give full warranty

Sounds like another one of those 'Oh we've never had that happen before'  :whistling: ......

I have to say although Kawasaki are helpfull.... eventually.....after being prodded with a sharp stick..... it would be much better to get the fooker right in the first place,,,, I mean it's not like this is a new bike and there are teething problems..

looks to be very straight and much like a manufacturing defect to me

fair point.. but my cracked mudguard may of not been the only one :nono: it is possible that this is the first that kawasaki have heard off this fault.. if of course it is a fault..! if the bike is 2 years old or over. owners may not bother to claim warranty and just get a plastic weld done. the mudguard is quite thick, if I had just gaffer taped the back just to strengthen the area around the split I don't think it would have gone any worse. also the split could not even be seen unless you prised open the two halves. but I'm a fussy sod when to comes to my bikes, and that would have played on my mind for eternity :mfr_lol:

Dave that to me looks quite bad.  I can't see how that can be attributed to fair wear and tear.

ok.. will wait till I get a few more views on this. then if the general view is a manufacturing fault/defect, will bend their ear holes some more. but the point they made.. if it was a manufacturing defect in the plastic they would have expected it to fail alot sooner, of course I don't know how long it's been like that. so I think I'm fighting a loosing battle here, if I was to take it further. but there is a bright side... I told the wife it was half price but this time it was the truth :mfr_lol:

Dave I don't agree, if that is a manufacturing defect it could have taken this long to appear,

I don't think it would have necessarily appeared sooner

Just my view mind you

The front mudguard is made from very brittle plastic. I broke mine after attaching a home made hose guide. It really p***ed me off since the repair was because of those almost impossible to remove mudguard mounted guides, one of which I just gave up on and cut off.

I was shocked how brittle the plastic was. My prevoius two bikes were both Aprilias and the plastics were very tough. The front mudguard of my Futura even survived a disc lock being turned into it. Don't try that on a GTR, the mudguard will just shatter!
