Last Sunday 4 of us (NEG Riders) went down to London to collect our Olympic Accreditation & Uniforms in preparation for working as static safety marshalls on the mens and womens cycle road races on 28 / 29 July.
We will not be riding the route with the race  but will be doing the static yellow flag waving in front of traffic islands. We do have to travel by bike (2 of us on GTR's) and if not riding a BMW (official bike supplier) we may be asked to cover up any manufacturers logos. (HOW DAFT CAN THEY GET!)
Definitely a once in a lifetime event.
We only got one photo before THE G4S Guard (yes they have recruited at least ONE) shouted at us that photography was not allowed.

I hate the Olympics.
My view is simple.
Private funding of the Olympics is less than 10% of the total. The tax payer is footing the bill.
Therefore London 2012 is in the public domain.
I love the Olympics, I hate the capitalism around it

Bradford Bradistan but still go there for a curry :whistling:
You haven't had all your annual leave requests declined because of the bloody Olympics!! :mfr_lol:
Sell your services to G4S. I understand they need all the help they can get :mfr_lol:
Bollox to the olympics...no one asked us if we wanted to pay for.. :hammer:.... journeys into London are already a mare, without 'Olympic only' trains, car lanes...etc.....
I despise all this bloody stupid unnecessary p.c surrounding the olympics, and everything else these days :2guns: :2guns: :2guns:.....no pictures ?? no manufacturer names on support vehicles???? WTF is all that about,...bloody moronic idiots imposing crazy rules.
I like the olympics , its a showcase for this great country ....I'll be watching from the comfort of my armchair...TBH a team of wild horses couldn't drag me to London :mfr_lol:

:agree: Let's sell it to some country that really need the expense and disruption to "normal" life. :hammer:
Not a fan of sport in any respect except motor sport, but it is great for the country as a whole and will probably make a mint for the UK albeit it is London-centric.
Always wanted to go to the 'spectacle' of the Olympics after the '92 Barcelona event, but there was some influence from the ex ( :censored: )
But I am now sick to the back teeth of it. Having worked until retirement in an environment where it became the only thing of importance, to the detriment of every other aspect of the service, I have seen how OTT the whole thing is. Piss ups and Brewery come to mind - as the G4S seems to show, although even now the government are sliming out of any responsibilities they have!
What really pisses me with the whole thing is the very thing that started this thread. The commercialism with American and German companies dictating the whole running of the event.
The torch must go past McDonalds, it must go to BMW dealerships, Cadbury chocolate will give away BMW Mini's (painted red white blue!) etc, etc.
I understand they have invested monies into it and want their return, but the tail is wagging the dog.
It's supposed to be about the prowess of the athletes and a showcase of the best in sport (although again Figure Skating - FFS?) at an amateur level (I can't see many Sunday league footballers in the team?!)
All in all happy to be out of the service now so not being dragged into it, and only going to be in the UK for about 4 days of it!
Chris, other than that we have your vote, yes? :mfr_lol:
I have just retired from the London Fire Brigade. My last station was at Stratford, so had most of the Olympic site on our patch.
I have to say that the regeneration side of things is commendable when you know what used to be there. However I do not know if the legacy side of things will work, or if it will be a millstone around the local council's financial neck.
The brigade were given four Mini's by BMW to use as roving vehicles on the main areas of the park, however it will be intersting to see what has happened with our larger appliances as the entire fleet is Mercedes

Well you will need to cover up all reference to Mercedes for a start. :mfr_lol: Also not sure how you will get an entire fire crew including equipment into a mini.

:mfr_lol: That would be a first. :hammer:
Some companies will make a lot of money for sure, but the taxpayer will end up with a huge bill like in every other country where they held Olympics so far.
Greece is still paying for the Athens Olympics. :ohplease:
I love the whole idea of The Olympics, even in our own country .. indeed once in a lifetime experience even if I don't get anywhere near the action ! Slane ? Swimming tour and tickets ? Fantastic ... have a great time ( I do Triathlon hence the love of swimming )
London is already grinding to a halt ... a lot of the road closures are already "in" and Olympic Lanes open .. some of the time !! It really is VERY busy, even on a bike with "go anywhere" paint and stickers !
Sadly,as has already been said the £ side of it is almost as important to "The Games" as the sporting events, which of course is just bollox but without the money and the names a lot of stuff just wouldn't be happening.
The best place to see the action will be from the comfort of your own sofa.

:censored: :asshole: :shit: :censored: :asshole: :censored:OLYMPICS!
I don't mind the sports side of it, I enjoy watching some of the athletics and the cycling.
But the way it is hyped and the 24/7 coverage has already turned me off the whole thing.
Now even half of the :censored: adverts are Olympic sponsors blathering about how Olympic they are.
Well, P&G & BP and all the others can bite my :asshole: and eat my :shit:
BAH HUMBUG!! :mfr_lol:
I sincerely hope the Oiympics are a great success with most of the population stuck in London or glued to the TV, that way there will be much less trafic for grumpy old buggers like me to enjoy a good ride

Would be great except that I live 25 miles from Stratford so the traffic on this side of The Stink will be atrocious.
I was hoping that England would get to the final in Euro2012 as that would have emptied the roads nicely for several hours, but once again we were let down.

You can but not in the same sentance. Nor can you say "2012 Olympics, London 2012 Olympics, Olympics, GB Olympics...And many more!"...

Well its now just 2 days before heading south to do my bit for the Olympics (but dont tell LOCOG Im not riding a BMW!)
I'm going be in the middle of Kingston on Thames about 10 miles from the finish so they should be well in their stride and getting the sprinters helped to the finish. Where else could one be on an olympic course (ooops sorry its caleed the Field of Play!) about a metre and a half from the worlds best in full flight, and getting paid for it too!
And.. the weather forecast is good too.
