Title: Stem Mount
Post by: Debs on July 12, 2012, 03:37:35 AM
 :help:

I want an extra ram ball and the only place I fancy having it is on a stem mount between the bars on the yoke..

I have seen the one I want but I have no idea what size the bore is to accept the stem..
The stem mounts come in 3 sizes.....
13.3mm - 14.7mm
15mm - 17mm
17.5mm - 20.5mm

Any ideas?  :ohplease:

- hope this helps.

- was actually toying with the idea of cutting down a 11 mm allen wrench and inserting that into the stem-bolt , with a plate welded onto the top of the allen wrench to mount a GPS

Ive already seen this one but with the postage it is to much and not worth buying.

$80 / £51 is far to much when I can get a stem mount for £20

I wonder if its possible to put a 1" ball on to a 11mm hex/allan key bar? Hmmmmm

- am pretty sure that it can be done and was planning to experiment this weekend.

- with a cutting wheel , the allen key can easily be trimmed down , weld a small spot to prevent it dropping into the stem completely and then weld a small plate onto the top with the correct angle.

- can be easily removed when required too.

cheers

Found an alternative way... How about using a sump plug  :mfr_lol:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRASS-OIL-SUMP-DRAIN-PLUG-BOLT-SCREW-MAGNETIC-BSP-THREADS-/280737281910?pt=UK_SportingGoods_OtherSports&var=&hash=item415d3ef776#ht_500wt_971

Drill a hole in the middle... thread it and put a ball ram in.. perfect...  :mfr_lol:

I made a bracket for the ball and fixed it using a piece of  8mm screwed rod through the stem, works well and is removable in about two minutes. Fixed top and bottom with locknuts its really solid.

i got a good fix by doing this

I just used the ram ball mount , the piece on the right in the pic.

I got some threaded connector bar from the iron monger, looks like a very long nut, which accepts the ram ball mount, on the other end i put a small length of threaded bar.

I took out the yolk stem nut, and inside i inserted a normal nut that i put several winds of pvc tape around so that it was a tight fit into the underneath of the stem nut, i replaced the stem nut and tighted up, now i have a thread nut that i can screw the assembly into

the pic shows the connector bolt which has the screw bar  underneath , which screws into the nut which is wedged into the underneath of the stem nut, hope ive explained that, and for the critics who will pick holes in this, its been in two years , and never budged and there is no danger of it falling into the fork

send me a pm if you need any clarification , you will need your ram ball mount, some threaded steel bar a regular nut and the connector bolt, all on ebay , the pvc tape will pack the nut in and hold in place while you replace the stem nut and get the ram mount into place, Ive also added the 2 inch ram extension arm which put my zumo into a perfect position just below the eye line sight of my dials.
I love cheap low tech solutions

these are the connector nuts, cant remember if its 6 or 8mm, if no threaded bar is available then you can cut down some long bolts , you sound a handay resourceful gal so should be simples for you.

Just bought one of these. had one on my last on e before I sold it. kit contains a polished stainless steel cap with polished ball head, 1 piece of stainless rod with threaded ends and a washer and nylock nut.  simple to fit and looks great.

Brilliant idea and so simple. I will be having a go at this very soon. Just bought an 11 plate GTR and need to move some of the gadgets across from my Wing. Time for a more 'fun' ride me thinks :)
Thanks for all the useful tips guys, such a wealth of knowledge on here...

:185: PCPete, its always good to see new members joining this forum, which you will find informative and above all else very friendly

Tell us all a bit more about yourself in the intro section, maybe some pics of your GTR, which I think you will find exciting after a 'wing'.

I may be wrong but could you be P.C, (the forum name is a bit of a give-away), if so then you will be in the company of other P.Cs on here.

No, not P.C. but earned by being (not) Politically Correct. Given the 'title' by work colleagues many years ago when I used to work in the IT department of my firm - now they put me in front of clients....

I will introduce myself as requested

Sorry to drag up an old post but...

...Does anyone have one of these farkels made up that they're not using anymore or would someone be able to make me one up. Happy to pay reasonable costs. I'd just crack on and make one myself but I've not got any spare time at the moment and TBH, the RAM screw-in butt plug option doesn't look too convincing, at least not from a security perspective.

I only ask as I have my sat nav mounted on a Kawasaki mount and was hoping to fit a ram mount for my camera

The better more adaptable option for me is to use a handlebar stick from ProjectD so I've ordered one

I don't know for sure but I would think so.  I use a 6" Ram extension and it holds the Tom Tom Rider OK.  I have Helibar risers on though.  The ball sits pretty flush to the top of the yolk cap.

Thanks Rob, I took some measurements and came to the conclusion that even if the Ram mount and extension did fit with the Sat Nav mount in place that it would look a bit messy and probably get in the way of the ignition key.

So I've ordered a Handle bar stick which should resolve the problem

Thanks for all of the ideas. I now have the Telferizer stem mount. What great service, I ordered it at 2-00pm yesterday and it arrived at 11-00 am this morning. Didn't have to pay upfront either, the invoice was enclosed for payment within 7 days. Great service.

My parts which I ordered from ProjectD on 26.01.16 arrived at the Coventry distribution centre late last night, lets see how long it now takes for the delivery to be completed to North Yorkshire

Its really disappointing to order something and then sit twiddling your thumbs waiting for it to arrive.

Bit  :offtopic: but I sent my PCV licence to DVLA for renewal. It arrived on 23 Dec, ok Xmas hold up accepted but on the 4th Feb it was sent back to me for something to be clarified on the form (even though it was correct). I have sent it back twice now by special del at £6-45 a go. The worse thing now is that I can not do my part time job as the licence expired on 28th Jan which, because I drive kids to school means my council badge expired at the same time. There is no recourse with DVLA for loss of earnings.

Excuse the rant.
