Title: New rear shock just fitted, now I need advice.
Post by: Lonewolf on July 09, 2012, 08:59:44 PM
Yep, a new rear shock fitted under warranty and asked the dealer for advice on how to set it up. They just replied, look in the handbook.

So the handbook refers to an average rider of 68 kgs  not the average rider I know. So assuming I didn't weigh 68kgs  :whistling:  and possibly weighed about 95kgs how would you set up the spring pre-load adjuster & rebound damping force adjuster?
How many clicks and how many turns????

Post by: O.C. on July 09, 2012, 09:05:20 PM
Steve, I would start with setting it at the halfway mark.....screw it all the way in and then all the way out counting the clicks as you go... and then after testing adjust again stiffer, or softer, remembering where you started from (number of clicks) and how many click adjustments you have made

This way you should find a setting that suits you sir

Hope that doesn't sound like double dutch [/b

Roger, what about the rebound damping force adjuster screw at the bottom of the shock, would you do anything with that?

again Steve, fully in is greatest force and fully out is least force, you should turn counter clockwise to decrease force
I would suggest one full turn out to start with and then adjust to suit your requirements

Press down on seat and see how it rebounds up. If its bouncy, then it needs tightening
Make small adjustments. Quarter turn. You want it so it bounces up and settles straight away

Ive noticed that from extreme left to extreme right there are 28 clicks. I've no idea what it was on but it seemed a bit wallowy on the way to work today. I've now set it at 14 clicks and I'll take it from there. If it still feels a bit soft do I turn it to the right, i.e. clockwise to stiffen it up?

I think the default is either 18 or 22 clicks.

Clockwise/tighten will increase firmness

What you are doing Steve is correct, adjust -ride- adjust -ride and so on till you have the setting that best suits your riding style.

You could set up the static sag first. If you set both rebound and compression to half way put the bike on the centre stand and measure from a fixed point on the rear frame to a fixed point on the swing arm, this will be the unloaded figure with no weight on the rear wheel. Note this figure. Now drop it onto its wheels, bounce it a few times and repeat the same measurement.

Subtract one from the other and it ideally should be 15-20mm for the rear. If you have too big a figure screw the preload in, might be 2-3 turns per centimetre out. When that figure comes in then do as the other say for rebound. When you bounce it do it from the front of the seat and the tank. The front and rear should rise at the same rate and it should settle quickly. If it rises too fast screw the rebound in. If too slow screw it out.

If you want to do it with your weight on it its called dynamic sag and is the same procedure. The front is done the same way and should be 30-40mm. If you use the lower figure for both it will feel harder, the larger figure is good for a comfortable road bike, depends on your style. I have never bothered with dynamic sag as the static one does just fine.

Asif, many thanks for that. I have my moments, just cant usually be bothered to ride fast. I like to chill out when I'm on the bike. Admit it though, there were moments when even you were getting left behind! Be honest!

+1

This prob the best thing to do as it transforms the bike

It sounds like it's a two man job, hold the bike, measure, bounce it. Asif, when you next available?   :whistling:

It is a two man job. I actually downloaded some video that showed how to setup the suspension.

Not sure when I'm free though

No dramas, I was only joking. The bike felt much better today but I may just tweak it a bit more and see if it improves matters or goes the other way.

Asif, did you try to stay with a trained, experienced Police motorcycle rider?  :police:
Why?
Everyone knows that they can ride at lightspeed through the eye of a needle on a beat up R100RT with huge panniers.  :mfr_lol:

After seeing a West Midlands bike cop jump a Z1000ST police special off a 1metre ramp and then pop a wheelie (all done in a car park) I resolved to never try to outrun a bike cop. Several months later I nearly did outrun one (note the nearly!) but got banned and fined and have been a VERY good boy ever since, apart from one or 2 minor lapses.

My recollection was that I led the way from the Lower Lode to the village of Lower Slaughter. You may recall the coach in front of me which was being driven furiously by some bafoon, cutting corners like they were going out of fashion and kicking up lots of shit in the process. Sensible option, hold back but still ride progressively where appropriate and possible. At Lower Slaughter you got hung up on that waiter chap in the coffee house and he knocked you back, (we both saw you winking at him)  .
Lower Slaughter to the motorway we made good progress, (me leading), I even recall you complimenting me on my riding. By prior agreement, upon joining the motorway Dave was to lead, and together the two matching magnesium GTR's cut through the traffic like surgeons carving a path for the followers, (you) to try to keep up.
Come on Dave, back me up.  :mfr_lol:

They say you should adjust shock to rider sag roughly 35 mm  ,put bike on centre stand and measure from a fixed point like axle nut to a point on the rear fairing.then put bike on side stand and measure same two points again this will give you static sag 5 to 10 mm ,then sit on bike with as much of your weight off the ground and get a friend to measure same two points this will give you fully loaded ,now subtract the fully loaded measurment from  the first fully unloaded measurment this will give you the rider sag which should be roughly 35 mm.the rebound adjuster screw is for setting how quickly the suspension returns after been compressed, too soft you get a bouncy ride too hard and you get bumped out of the seat, the rebound adjustment is a personal setting.Front shocks rider sag can be anywhere from 35 to 48 mm rider sag personal prefernce as to how you wish to ride.
