Title: VALUE FOR MONEY
Post by: rippers on June 28, 2012, 04:21:56 PM
Today I took my bike into the local dealership to book a service. I saw a new 2012 burgandy GTR 1400 and asked about a trade in.
My bike is 2011 registered, but a 2010 model. (The one before the Traction control etc and the glove compartment in the tank)
I paid £10k for it brand new in March 2011.
It has the 2 year warranty and has toured Europe and clocked 14000 miles. It has been serviced every 3500 miles religiously by a Kawasaki dealer. That has cost me in servicing over £1k since I bought the bike.
Anyway trade they offered me £5500. I cannot believe a new bike loses almost 50% from being registered new on the road 15 months ago.
Upshot is I have now gone back to my original mechanic who did my old bikes. He is used by loads of local bikers riding Yamaha 1300s, Pan Euros and BMW tourers, and has a first class reputation.
I am taking a gamble as I have the remainder of a 2 year warranty with 9 months left. But he is going to do a full service for £150, that includes valve adjustment etc. He said as the plugs were replaced only 3000 miles ago no need to do them again, and that I should get to do at least 5000 miles between services. I am saving over £150 on this service alone. Love the bike but do not think dealers give you V.F.Money.

I've been wondering how much mine would be worth now. Bought brand new last year, but a 2010 model. I've owned from new for 9 months or so and done 9k miles or so. I seriously doubt I'd get £10k for it.

I've been vaguely wondering for a couple of reasons - one is how much to value it for insurance purposes and then other is that my commute is about to reduce from 55 miles to 5 miles in a new job. I don't want to get rid of my GTR, but it's not really necessary for my new commute (which was the primary reason for getting it in the first place). I need to have more excuses to use it when I start my new job! Hopefully I'll enjoy it at the weekends for once.

that does sound a low value in deed. you actually paid your dealer around £8380 as the remainder went to the vat man.  so thats a loss of £2880.   14000 miles is  high for a 2 year old bike , i know there are more high milers but the truth is more like 4000 miles per year. You will take an higher depriciation than most on your bike as its the pre 2010 model and most 2nd buyers will want the extras that brings. I would have thought hed be offering you £6500 but then his retail price would end up being a bit high once hes added more vat and under written his warranty.
The only lesson i see here is that fully main dealer serviced bikes dont seem to make much of a difference, think id rather have put the pennies in a jar and used the £1000 towards the next bike. Id go for a private £6500 sale if i were you , but there is a lot out there on the market.

All used bikes prices are low.
Great if you have money, not so good if yer selling.
It comes from us being in the middle of the 2nd dip in our double-dip recession.
I tried to sell my 1400 during the first dip and even though it was the cheapest out there by a long shot, I didn't get even one call from 4 weeks of advertising.
I'm kinda glad I didn't but at the time the money would have saved me a lot of pain and hassle and stress.

This is just the excuse I need to keep my GTR despite not travelling so far to work. I'm not going to get much money for it, so I may as well keep it! Top job. Time just just buy a second, smaller, bike in addition to the GTR then!

First I need to buy a push bike though to travel to my new job.

I totally agree, as the factors pointe dout by Viper ahave to be considered

And don't forget the dealer will need to make some sort of profit too

And as gearoge says it is a buyers market at the moment

In March of this year I got £5300 for an 07 plate 20k GTR against a £9000 11 plate GTR.  Go figure that!

that sounds a great deal, I guess a lot depends on the dealers desire to do a deal, the way you manage the whole situation and the money he has tied up in the bike he is selling, sweet deal

A mate of mine just did a deal for a Suzuki GSX1250 and collects it next friday, RRP is £8495 and he got it for £7500, seems the local dealer wanted the deal pretty bad to get almost a grand off.

Bike looks ok, but its chain driven and not a GTR.

There are bargains to be had.

I would be wary of buying an older model on the latest plate, especially if there are model changes. e.g. a 2010 on 2012 plate should be ok, but a 09 on a 12 plate is asking for trouble

I was under the impression that as soon as one purchases a NEW bike, you can expect that it will almost instantly lose nearly 50% of it's value just because you took it out of the showroom and it is now second hand to a new buyer.  In the first year, bikes lose value as kwikasfuki.... (ahem)

My first bike was a ZZR600 bought from new.  I errrrr....  wrote it off exactly 1 year after purchasing and got just over half back from the insurance - even after several months of negotiation.... That'll teach me to go to Wales....  :whistling:

The first new bike I bought was a Vstrom. Because it was on interest free it was bearable.

In future I'm most likely to go for a second hand bike. Just so I can give it a good test ride

the next time someone comes on here bleating about how much they have lost on their gtr , check out what 9.5k will buy you, buyers market and all that . once you have sold you are then the otherside of the table getting the deal.

Dave I think that's expensive. I paid over a £1000 less for an 11 plate and that was from a dealer. And it was in a better colour than blue.

If you are one of those sad lonely people who get upset about depreciation,... they why did you buy a new bike in the first place?
Sheesh!

I bought a 1989 GTR1000 in 1996 for £500.
It has been written off once and is now worth about £1000.
Since 96 I have done over 80k miles on it.

The 1400 I paid full whack for (£10,995 new in Aug 2007) and may now be worth £5,000 if I'm lucky.
So, was the £6000 "depreciation" worth the 5 years/50k miles?
HELL YEAH!!  :punk:  :hammer: :hammer:

depreciation dose not bother me :nono: and most likley the majority of us who buy new! I tend to keep what I buy. had the zzr1400 4 years and lost £3,000 over the 4 years, hence.. the depreciation levels out and together with the use you had over the years makes it exceptabale  I think why people are moaning.. is they don't plan on selling so soon afterwards, but there could be financial or medical reasons why they made that decision. no one's to blame, dealers have over heads and want a min of £1,000 in the bike your trading. it's just the way it is! I bought a new ford focus titanium 12 months ago, it's only just done 3,000 miles due to having my gtr and the zx6 and most likely worth £5,000 less than I paid for it already! but I should get at least 10 years plus out of it, so give don't a :shit: besides... my wife can make money disappear a dam sight faster than any new bike or car could ever do :mfr_lol:
