Title: Retards!!
Post by: Mogster on May 28, 2012, 04:16:53 PM
Now on Sunday it was a tad warm.... and so me and Smarty dressed accordingly, Vented Boots, hypercool base layers, vented leathers, summer mesh and leather jackets (armoured) back protectors and summer vented gloves...

Now we were a tad warm but on the whole comfortable......

Now some of the other muppets who were zooming around didn't seem to have read the memo....

we saw bikes being ridden (at speed) by ppl in shorts, t-shirts, no shirts  no gloves, and my personal fave was the guy who blasted past us on the A120 on his Ducati ....in Flip flops!!!!... i had to catch up just to see if i wasn't seeing things.... oh yes and his GF on the back was in shorts, flip flops and a vest top...... it's no wonder the Establishment gets the hump with us (Bikers) when they see us dressed like that..

I have to say that even in my 'YTS' days (thas Young Thick and Stupid) on my 100cc yamahahaha I still tried to wear the right gear.

I suppose it may be because i know ppl who have been daft enough to pounce about in Kevlar speedos and have paid the price that I make sure I have made an effort to protect me self.....

After years on the Bikes I have friends in wheel chairs cos they thought back protectors were fer wusses, I know a lady who hasn't worn a skirt or shorts since she was 18 cos she came off yer little Suzuki and was wearing a skirt.... she used to have a cracking pair of legs.... and probably one of the worst was seeing a bloke on a CBR1000. some years ago, loose the front and put a foot down to kick it back upright...shame he was barefoot..... it was a mess and all his toes were ripped off.

One of my friends came off 2 years ago, big style, he hit and uprooted a road sign as he was flying through the air, yes he was injured but his life was saved by the fact he had a good lid, leathers boots, gloves and a back protector on....

I have raced in the past and dropped a Gixer flat out at the end of the back straight at Snetterton.... i slide fer ages.. leathers, boots and lid trashed, but I was totaly unhurt...... makes ya wonder though how good skin is at sliding down roads.... not very good.

Totally agree with you 100%. I used the bike for work last week, mid 20's and very warm but I still had all my gear on. I just had to change to a thinner pair of gloves cause my Rukka winter gloves were a tad too much.
Plenty of folk though on scooters and sports bikes wearing t-shirts and shorts.

Couldn't agree more. I saw a guy on a  elderly ZX9  this tea time riding in tea shirt, shorts, no gloves and sat back (almost laid back) with no hands on the bars ,, fkn wanker

i dont even feel safe wearing JEAN'S as opposed to leather or textile trouser's,a pal of mine alway's wore leather's,one only day he didn't bother as he was only going a short distance,he was hit on the side while he waiting to turn right,he had multiple break's in his right leg, nearly lost his leg,he had 11 months off work,it cost him his job & alot of pain,it's leather or textile for me 100%.

I was out in the car on Saturday and some idiot on a sports bike in t shirt and shorts, no gloves or boots with girlfriend on the back in similar attire.
They just don't seem to have any idea of the consequences - they ought to show pictures of gravel rash and what it does to you, that should be enough to make people think - although its probably too gruesome to show on TV even after the watershed

I agree, Mongs, but it's their choice!
Some choose to run illegally loud pipes, some choose to ride like  :asshole:'s, some choose to ride effectively naked.
At least with the nekkid ones it's only *their* skin that will get trashed.
Riding like an  :asshole: often affects others (especially when it goes wrong) and loud pipes can upset a LOT of people.

I rarely wear riding trousers as I cannot afford a pair for summer, a pair for spring/autumn and a pair for winter.
I have a pair with a zip in liner that does for wet weather and winter but in the spring/summer/autumn I just wear jeans.
If I could get mesh trousers in my size and had the money then I'd probably buy some but I can't so it's irrelevant.
At the moment I am struggling to get bike boots in my size (15UK 52EU) but may have managed to source some.

I've seen people riding in leather shorts and flip-flops, and a lid. His "bitch" was wearing a leather bikini, flip-flops and a lid.
Would have been a shame if they did come off as they were a fine looking pair but it's THEIR CHOICE and it doesn't affect you.

So please continue tut-tuting away unless you are Police/Paramedic in which case you have my sympathy for having to clean up the mess after they do come off.

It's definitely their choice. My RoSPA tutor mentioned it at the weekend as we saw a lot of folk out without gear on while we were chatting after my ride (which I must write a note about on my thread). He said that he always says to them (if he's ever chatting to them), do you fancy rubbing your elbow along the ground right now? Then how about at 30+ mph?

Anyway, this year I've got some leather trousers for the first time as the opinion is they give the best protection. I wore them on both Saturday and Sunday in 27 degrees C according to the GTR. It was a bit toasty, but I think I could do that again. Stopping and removing jacket while drinking a cold drink in the shade for 30 minutes is a big help. If it got much hotter though I might struggle. I used to have some mesh trousers (which I'll need if we get hotter weather), but I've not needed them the last couple of years and now I can't find 'em. :-(

Agreed agreed.  They are a terrifying sight.

That I was fully armoured up and wearing an H Sam tilted the Sussex police in favour of not prosecuting me for my prang.  Oh, and of course they minimised my injuries - so a bonus there.

Sadly my armoured summer jacket (13 years old) was cut off and I have not found a good replacement - small price though.

I am off on a 2,400 mile trip on Friday.  I will have to wear my Rukka jacket but hey, I could use some weight loss, so sweat a little, strip it off during coffee stops (even change T ) and shower at the end of day.  Beats the horror stories related by Mogs above.

On a thread deviation note :I have just invested in a Senna to obviate the need to look at the sat nav which is fitted, for my 6'4"height,  rather low.

Any feed back on sena?

Safe riding all.

To link up to what Boomer said, until perhaps you've personally seen the local council jet washing or the fire brigade hosing down a stretch of Tarmac to remove the remains of a person, blood, skin, bone, brain etc it doesn't seem to sink in with most people regarding decent attire & then it's too late!

What gets missed, the foxes usually eat.

Also as Boomer says "So please continue tut-tuting away" they aint harming you. I usually wear all the gear but when in Europe in 40c heat I saw bikers fainting in the heat because they were wearing the "right gear" but were a danger to themselves and others as they were suffering heatstroke/dehydration. There is also the dress to crash mentality, just because Lorenzo et al crash at 100+ and walk away some think that wearing leather/armoured textile makes them invincible. It doesn't

I have worn and will continue to wear jeans/combats even shorts with t-shirt etc if i feel comfortable ( to slightly mitigate, I have a 4 mile commute in an urban area with the highest speed limit of 40mph and if "dressed down" I dont compete with the traffic. If going on faster roads, proper ride out I dress accordingly)

Rumour has it that at 30mph if you come off onto tarmac within 3 seconds you'll be down to bone and the bad news is you'll still be rolling unless of course you're unlucky enough to hit some street furniture!

Yes, I've done it years ago, t-shirt, no helmet while I was out in the south of France but I wouldn't do it now if you paid me.
Title: Re: Retards!!

It is the indviduals choice and it is very tempting to wear not a lot when its hot and if its a trip just down the road - I cant say I blame and in the past I have been tempted but haven't. Having seen the consequences of both low and high speed spills where people haven't worn appropriate gear and the mess +blood and being able to see peoples bones and muscle is enough.

Part of the problem is people don't think it will happen to them, its always somebody else and very few people get see to the damage and the disfigurement that gravel rash does.

Kind regards

Steve

At 30? I've had spills on my push bike at about that speed and come off relatively ok

Whats the consensus on wearing something like Draggin Jeans?

I do wear Draggin jeans...and have also tested them   I came off at about 50ish, It went though the denim on the thigh area, but the kevlar panels stood up fine...when i wear them I am concious of a lower spec of protection and do tend to moderate my speed and antics to suit.

and as far as people passing out due to heat exhaustion, it's more likley due to dehydration.... How many of you wear a camel or aqua pack when riding on hot days?..... being a PT i'm very aware as to how fast one can dehydrate, so i always take in adaquate fluid (and no thats not beer )

I suppose in the end it is your personal choice, but if you do take a spill in ya shorts, don't expect any sympahy from anyone....

so would you ride without a lid then if the law was repealed??

RiDE did a test of leather, textiles, kevlar lined jeans and regular jeans a few months ago - all for abrasion (impact stuff is down to armour). Leather came top, with kevlar not far behind. textiles weren't as good as kevlar. I think they had two sets of regular jeans. The preimium ones were "OK", but the cheap ones from ASDA or similar were poor. This is all from memory.

Re: the 30mph thing - I imagine if you continued to travel at 30 then you may be down to bone, but the whole time you're stopping / slowing down so not sure it quite works. When I used to ride a push bike more often I'd get up to 30 mph wearing shorts and t-shirt. I never fell off... so can't completely comment, but friends did and just had bumps, bruises and scrapes. The worst scrape was a kid at school who came off and the metal pedals kept spinning and took a couple of chunks out of his leg down to the bone...

I think if I had a scooter or 125 motorbike for my wife to learn on, then I'd use it around town and probably not wear quite the same stuff. Mainly because speeds are lower.

cpettifer - thanks for that. Kevlar better than textiles? Didn't know that.

I have a pair of Draggin Jeans that I need to put a pouch in for the armour. However, its not full Kevlar which concerns me.

I'm tempted to get a pair for jeans from this lot: http://www.hoodjeans.co.uk/

Read a lot of good reviews and seem to have more coverage.

I personally think textiles probably vary and they may have just had a poor set - they only had one set of textiles they tested. That said, Kevlar probably varies too. I know there are different makes who put patches in different places and some weave it into the jean fabric don't they? I'll see if I still have the magazine - I suspect not as I recently had a clear out - but if I do I'll scan it in.

OK a quick Google revealed this discussion on another forum http://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=231812 (http://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=231812)

Here's the rub from the abrasion test (I'm so funny):

Hein Gericke Reno leather jeans: 4.74 seconds
Draggin' Biker kevlar jeans: 3.07 seconds
Hornee kevlar jeans: 1.39 seconds
Rev'it Sand textile trousers: 0.71 seconds
Levi stonewash 501s: 0.56 seconds
Tesco Cherokee jeans: 0.16 seconds

Notice that Draggin jeans manufacture their clothing for that magic three seconds target.

The worse bike crash I had was as a kid. We used to do non handers frequently downhill whilst racing. I was on my beloved Raleigh Chopper mk 2 (silver with alloy wheels), and my mate on his Grifter. Unfortunately we hit a bumpy part of the road at speed and both went flying off right into the kerb. I remember the front fork being bent at 90 degrees, God knows where the wheels went and I was shitting my load cause of what my parents would say (never mind all the cuts and bruises).

I still have the scars to prove that day.

However, nothing beats the fight I had with a bus and car when I was 12. According to the doctors someone up there must have been looking out for me

Any protective clothing is in my opinion an absolute 'must'

I can't imagine the excrutiating pain that would have to be endured during a course of serious skin grafting....apparently its an experience that no one ever wants to repeat...and yet bike riders still choose to 'excercise their rights' for the sake of looking 'cool'

evening guys,
agree with you all 100% on this one, regular site up n down my road kids on scooters,shorts,t-shirt,n deck sandals,,,,
looks like good ole mam n dad as bought them a brand new scooter for leaving school,to run around on,,,with the baffles out to make it sounds like it doing 90!!!!!
when i had my off a few years ago,it was a 30ish mph off on a bend (diesel spill),,,had a pair of summer gloves on  - the neoprene actually "burnt" on the ares where it touched the tarmac, almost melted away!!!!.
still got a few scars on my fingers now, although it was just a few scuffs, the outside of my left wrist where i went down an the glove Rolled up my wrist, hurt like fook for weeks :nono:
if your fortunate to survive,an not have to endure a few years of skin grafting, you may still end up with blood poisioning,,,from all the crap etc thats already on the tarmac,,along time before you intruduced yourself to the black stuff :mfr_lol:.
so,,always better to be safe than sorry, enjoy the weather guys, stay safe, and above all,,,,,,,ENJOY!!!!

I'm going to do the "topper" thing right now...!

A friend of mine (a likely story perhaps) on his push bike in London was knocked off by a lorry and found himself underneath it. In the seconds (or less?) he was underneath he realised the lorry was going to run over him. Realising it was going to run over his chest he had the presence of mind to pull himself further underneath so the rear wheels ran over his hips instead, thinking he had a better chance of survival. Miraculously he survived and the doctors are certain he would not had he not followed this course of action.

No protective gear would have saved him from that, unless his body armour was some kind of fully rigid shell that could withstand a lorry running over them!

Speaking of retards, see the picture below.

On the A640 and I see a car in the ditch. Stop the bike to help.

The driver of the car has the bonnet open and is attempting to piss on the fire that has started. He's actually begging for the pee to come out.

Needless to say he doesn't succeed.

As the fire really gets hold, he lies on the grass wailing and crying.

Really was a sight to behold.

Looking at the skid marks I estimated he was doing about 100. I asked him what he was doing and he said 70 mph. I honestly think he thought the limit was 70mph. Its not.

Was earlier this week.

He could have killed someone due to the number of ramblers, cyclists and motorbike riders. Speaking of motorbike riders, some of them were cocks anyway, trying to get their knee down on every bend
