Title: Donations
Post by: Kwikasfuki on May 19, 2012, 12:28:17 PM
The more observant of you will have noticed a Donations (http://www.gtr1400.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=paypal) link on the menu bar.

Any loose change that is about to make a hole in those deep pockets will be greatly appreciated!

I'll probably trial putting some ads on and see if that can fund the site. I'm not sure we get that volume on this site though.

The other idea I had was making a 1400 GTR owners club emblem that can be stuck on the bike (obv in different colours). Members could then buy these with the profit being used to fund the site. Again, don't know how feasible that is

Roger I know you are dealing with the clothing and taking orders but if this forum had a mercahndise section selling base ball caps, mouse mats, mugs, key rings, embroidered badges etc, that might help raise a few quid.

Nice one Steve...but TBH I don't want to get involved with running a merchandise section as I've seen what it involves in other biking clubs.

The whole merchandising thing can be beneficial to a club/society, but it does take a lot of organising with stock, distribution and not least, finances

How about having a membership on a recurring paypal payment. The more who pay the less it will be.

I agree that this site is fantastic and convey my thanks to those who maintain it. I will pay towards being a member as I have gained so much from the knowledge on here since having my bike two months.

But don't price newcomers out, there are plenty of other sites around the world that speak English.

It can be made browse only for non members

Good ideas, but don't you want to be careful about making a profit though, I mean from a tax perspective?  If there are 50 contributors, say, paying 12 a year (for example), you'll end up making money. Personally, I think you deserve it, but isn't there something about non-profit organisations etc?

I'll donate just because I think it's a great forum, and I enjoy interacting with you lunatics, but I'm probably too scared to make most of the modifications mentioned on here myself :mfr_lol:

Cheers

I think it's fair to say and the impression I get is that this forum was created for the benefit of all GTR owners wherever they may happen to be in the world. I think it would be wrong to section off the forum with different access levels for different folk, thats counter productive to the future of the forum. I can remember when I joined this forum while it was still in its 'infancy' so to speak and yet in what seems like a very short period of time it has grown to what we see today.

There are a consistent few who spend a lot of time on the forum, myself included according to the wife :whistling:  and if at this stage only those few choose to contribute financially towards the running of the forum then so be it.

Profit? That'll be the day! I could probably offset it against the losses made for the past few years if there was any.

Asif.. Have you thought any more about my idea of some sort of membership...

Im still up for making a donation every month of say 50p to £1..
More people who do this the better it will be for everyone.....

I dont think you should be solely responsible for funding this great site when it brings so much help to many of us..

Rusty me little Cockney chum, couldn't agree more.  :mfr_lol:
Not only is this forum a wealth of information but its provided some great opportunities for us all to meet up and have a good laugh together. If a 'membership fee' was introduced could the site in effect actually support itself? Most bike forums charge something, its just whats expected!
Title: Re: Donations
Post by: Debs on February 06, 2013, 09:49:17 PM
If only 50 of us pay it will only be 50p a month.. Now thats not going to break the bank.....

We could do it on a yearly membership and pay £6 each.. Then at the start of the next year, if its in credit then it could be lowered, or nothing to pay until the following year..

There will always be those who are to tight and want something for nothing.  :hammer:

Those who dont pay for membership should be limited to what they can see or post..

As soon as you start to restrict access you will start to lose people and the site will become stagnant.
You are far better off having a yearly "whip-round" like they do on the Micapeak motorcycle email-lists.
That way if you enjoy it and can afford it, you pay, yet someone who is skint doesn't feel left out.
I have no problems with contributing but someone who gets on here once a month may not want to.

The problem with many of the "pay" sites is that they can become very elitist and "clubby".
Hopefully, this won't go that way.
Title: Re: Donations
Post by: O.C. on February 08, 2013, 04:11:58 PM
:agree: on another forum that I frequent we have a donation system which helps with admin costs and enables forum users to chuck a couple of quid into the pot every now and then.

Those that have contributed get a 'donation' symbol added to their signature line, there's absolutely no animosity towards others that choose not to donate,  TBH they are few and far between.

That way costs are spread between forum users and access is maintained to all who register

I agree with ya Boomer. I am also on another site and they have a 2 tier system where Full membership is £15 per year or you can be a Registered User for free and have restricted access

There has been the odd Bun fight regarding why some pay and why others choose not too.

I totally understand that some folk use these sites for social as well as other reasons so are on all the time whilst others just come on once a month so will not pay, so I will probably be trying to implement a Voluntary Donation system on there too for the Reg Users to use if they feel they have received help or saved money as a result of the site.  We shall see

The Full Members do get benefits for their money including Free Bike Show passes, Discounted merchandise and BMF membership and and the funds help pay for the Shows we attend and for the Site Hosting Fees.

As you know, sites cost money to host and it's through Donations or membership that they are able to exist.  I will be donating to this great site today and am more than happy to do so each year as its a great site offering invaluable information.

Keep up the good work

Regards

Daz

Its a year as we were up with 100milesaway and Olde Coney this time last year when he had the issue with the woman in the car.

But to give him his due he has bought a house, although the cost of this would be heaps less then if he was down here in Sunny Oxford.

If he stalls for a fiver i will lend it to him.

I have no idea, she works for BMW and is at manager level which entitles her to some special privileges normal associates dont get, when I am ready to change I can only enquire as to what deal is to be had, remember there are no trade ins at all, it's a pure purchase from the company.

mmm yes but, I didn't go to part x it. I only went for a test ride on the Versys, but  came away having been amazed at the deal that they offered me to change. So it was a bit of a whirlwind really, I didn't even come home on the GTR, as things moved so fast. But one thing for sure there is not a better GTR on the market than my one.
