Interesting (brief) review of Sport Touring tyres:

The new Metzeler ROADTEC Z8 tyres came out far quicker than the competition. Has anyone got any experience with Metzeler tyres?
I'll need new tyres soon, currently on OEM. On previous bikes I've had Avon Storms, good price and good in the wet as far as I can tell. General opinion these days seems to be PR3s are the way to go, but they a re bit pricier. These Metzeler's are bang in the middle for price. Should I be a guinea pig for trying them for the forum?! (although I'm not sure I'm experienced enough to say whether particular tyres are actually any good).

Anyone know where fatharry is these days?
Interesting - anyone got any recent experience (or just other experience)? Could have been a dodgy set?
It'll depend on what I can get hold of and where I can get fitting done I guess partly.
Could have been a dodgy set. Same with the PR3s in the same thread
The FJR's at work come with Metzeler tyre - they appear to want to kill the rider with initial massive understeer followed by phenomenal oversteer!
Had the same on the FJR we tested down in France, however the FJR is awful anyway!
Did find they rode better on Bridgestones though.
My GS has Tourance by Metzeler and they are excellent tyres, grippy and confidence inspiring.
Interesting bit of video ... he go the end wrong though .. he clearly meant to say .... " The PR3's are the ones to go for ! " :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
Not sure if this would swing it in favour of the Z8 - but you can get £25 cashback if you buy a pair/

hi mate, had a set of metzlers on my vfr when i first had it,they were fine,,,had 5500 mls out of the first set,,put a new set on,sorry cant remember exactly what ones, but i had over 5000 out of these, when i sold the bike id say there were proberly 1000 plus left on them.
so in my opinion,in vfr mode, they were spot on,but to be honest i dont ride in the wet, only when im caught out.
My gtr has got pirelli angels, done about 3000 on them now....all good at the moment

Which begs the question
Who does list their tyres as recommended for the GTR

Just bridgestone i think as according to my ...*pauses to spit on the floor* local dealer the GTR requires a 'special' front tyre. :hammer:
Ok juist had a look,
Michelin.... doesn't give a recomendation for GTR1400
Pirelli ....Recomends the Angels.... these were very good on Smartys Bandit ...the PR3's were fookin dreadful fer some reason
Dunlop .... doesn't give a recomendation for GTR1400
Conti... recomends their entire tyre range ... sooo i wouldn't put much faith in that! :mfr_lol:
The only issue with fitting Non approved tyres is in the event of a total write off caused by rider error or poor conditions, the insurance company... might... try and wiggle out of the claim.
I used to own a fancy sports car and one of the conditions on the insurance was that approved tyres had to be fitted by the dealer only. so there is a presendence.
How odd. I get Michelin recommending PR3s...
Article in latest RiDE talks about tyre repairing in event of a puncture. A lot of recovery people will only repair Michelin tyres because they use Kevlar instead of steel bands in the tyres. When you then screw into the tyres with steel bands you can potentially break the structure of the tyre, making it practically useless. The Kevlar in Michelin tyres, however, doesn't suffer the same fate. Michelin even deliberately repaired a tyre 30 times just to see what would happen and it was fine.
They've basically moved to the top of my list now, despite being slightly more expensive. I'm probably looking to get some in a month or so.
That is very interesting .. I did not know that little gem .. glad I am with Michelin then !
I'll try and remember to snap the article with my phone when I get home and post it.
Yes, the PR3s can be repaired. Have a read of this
http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/Products/productsresults/Tyres/2009/July/jul0109-british-standarsd-for-puncture-repairs/
I'd personally feel more comfortable dumping the tyre and starting again if I was unlucky enough to get a puncture.
